Is Sleep No More the production someone posted about in a tweet the other day, saying they hoped AFL would be able to go? Anyone? yes

I think what the article is also saying, and I agree that this can apply to idol as well, as that the artificial world of SYTYCD which includes choreography, technique, judging criteria, display of emotion etc. is different from the values, techniques, necessary skills, and choreography staples of the professional dance world. Although the show like idol was originally intended to launch someone into the process of auditions for real dance gigs, now the rewards are less valued in the industry, and alum have more likelihood of being successful if they get involved in the show again, then they would in the professional dance world. (creating a circular self-reinforcing pattern). IMO it's the creation of a bubble over time because of a widening gap between what makes good television, and what makes a great artist. The stigma results because professionals recognize that what the bubble rewards is not what the real world they work in rewards, and therefore they think the "winners" don't necessarily have all the necessary real world skills to succeed (they may have raw talent, that's different). I wonder if Project Runway is kind of an exception to this. Maybe regular watchers can tell me, but do winners actually enter their industry fairly successfully? ETA: it also begs the question of why do certain genres like country music seem to escape this? Is it just that the idol bubble criteria and the buying public's criteria align more closely for this genre than for rock or pop for example? I think this scenario is where myth must break with reality. The idea that the people in these competitions is a wide-eyed kid off the bus who has a ton of talent and no experience is not necessarily accurate, though it's not entirely inaccurate either, as evidenced by the case of Scotty and Lauren last year. And probably Lee. I've discussed Adam with people who are at least peripherally in the entertainment industry and the one criticism they had for him is that he was too professional. They thought him a "ringer." (I don't think in the conspiracy theory sense, but in the sense that this guy knew what he was doing and had been around the block and it wasn't really fair.) Of course, to that, I say : I watched the audition rounds of "Project Runway" for the first time ever the other day (I'm still a show or two behind ... could be doing that right now, I guess) and I was blown away by the level of preparation and experience. These people had full "portfolios." One of the competitors is a former Halston designer who walked away from the industry several years ago because of personal trauma and now wants to come back. I think every one of the 20 they profiled, had a full collection they had designed and made. And the vast majority were VERY good. They are not being plucked out of obscurity with a few good ideas and a sketch pad. These are people who know how to design, sew, tailor, innovate. SYTYCD is also indicative of the fact that these are not just random kids who are a "little skilled at dancing" and decide to go for it. These are highly trained, semi-professionals (or professionals, in Sasha's case). This is why I don't think they have made mention of Sasha's experience with GNT. The frontrunners already have a stigma that they are unfairly qualified. There is nothing in the rules that say you cannot be a professional and, like Adam, these shows can be used as a platform to break through the chasm that exists for many. There are tons of working actors and dancers who are gigging and making a modest living in New York and L.A. and even community theater, but who have no means to propel themselves onto the national and worldwide stage. These shows do that. It doesn't detract from their legitimate talent one iota. Only the perception of such. And it seems there is a little resentment on the other side. Not that I blame them. God knows the worst Broadway singer could outsing 95 percent of the Idol contestants on a bad day. I'm sure these dancers kind of feel the same way. I think the main reason country embraces it is that you CAN be just a kid with a look, some vulnerability and a good voice and they'll accept it. It's the American Dream. They don't care if you've toiled for years and earned your place (the rock community) or that you have super-slick looks, sound and visuals (the pop community), they want a great voice and a story. (Sorry, I'm definitely generalizing, any country fans ...) I agree, the fact that idol functions a certain way/has a certain mythos doesn't mean that individual contestants vary and some start from a different place and seek to use or break the mold. With SYTYCD - a certain skill level and experience seems necessary, but I guess it's the blurring of genre conventions/strict requirements that maybe gets to the professional dancers? Not many dancers dance BOTH professional ballet and hip-hop for example at the highest level do they? They specialize at a certain point.
