I realize I may have sounded rlly snippy thur. My apologies. I am very pms-y and prone to flying into fits of rage. Blame my uterus. (I'm putting that on a pendant!)  Maybe that saying would look better on a pendant because I'm not sure I like it as a smiley? ;D |

I appreciate your post, MWP, but I have always believed it was that deep. I chuckled when Adam first said that line in 2009 and I still do. He perhaps wasn't ready for what he was in for, as he stated in his speech this weekend, but he has since realized that there was a heavy mantle being laid upon though he may have not been ready for it then.
I've never thought him to be about superfluous entertainment – there is too much intention and emotional weight behind every artistic choice. Maybe it's so ingrained in him that he doesn't even realize he's doing it.
But I doubt it.
Like how his GNT costume was based on Baron Samedi and how the scarlet A, was intentional (people scoffed at that one at first too, until he said it flat out), little of his art is just random "fun." Even the stage ghey kiss was making a statement. It was desensitizing thousand and thousand of people and many very quickly realized, "Hey, that is hot!"
He may have done it because he thought it was fun and wanted to push buttons, but that in itself is deep. It always has been.
I don't care if he's shaking his ass and wearing feathers and a tiara, it's all making a statement. At the time of his first "My Change is Gonna Come," he probably just thought, I'm going to go balls-out crazy and express myself. But after six years of evolution as a person and an artist, his friends (who were there to witness it) seem to consider that performance as incredibly symbolic and a turning point for him.
He has said repeatedly this album is going to be deeply personal and autobiographical. That is NOT easy to do – to make art out of your pain and triumph without it being incredibly self-indulgent. If OOL is any indication, he's struck just the right chord and can make it evocative, deeply personal and yet universal.
His enthusiasm for the project would certainly indicate he feels he has managed that.
