I often discuss Adam in my other fandoms and tbh his sexuality has never been mentioned as an issue to anyone. They just literally don't know what he's done besides WWFM (some MIGHT know Ghost Town) and being in Queen. Because they don't follow him as fans. They know more about Adam than I do about other singers. If I'm not a fan why would I know what they are doing. Y'know. It's true. You only know about the singers that you follow. At least to any extent. I know the names of the top singers, of course. But I don't know what they're currently doing, when they are touring, what their new songs and albums are. If I hear about them on the news, it's just in passing. The top singers have huge fan bases who buy their music and concert tickets. Adam's doing well overall. He just needs that mega-hit that breaks through his own fan base, make it grow and make it stick.

I think a known gay man in the Judas role has a huge likelyhood of creating quite a controversy. The show is set to air on Easter Sunday, arguably the holiest day in Christian religion. Thanks to the current administration with a very devoted evangelical VP and a president that is willing to exploit the ultra conservative religious right, there is a big rise in the visibility and influence of fundamental Christian population. LBGT rights as well as the rights of POC and women are under attack in the US. Casting a gay man as Judas has the potential to be another kneeling for the National Anthem moment, a deliberately misdirected controversy created to divide the country. So the question becomes does the network cast the best candidate available or the one least likely to cause backlash.

VERY interesting and insightful article. Sam and Adam are totally different. Adam cannot act like Sam and vice versa. But Sam's rather neutral persona is certainly paying off. It's true that times have changed since Adam's Idol year. That's an understatement. Sam may not realize it, but he is reaping the benefits of that "time between" then and now. I was once chastised (not on Atop) for posting that Adam should be more "palatable." I was attacked for suggesting that Adam "fake it" and not "be himself." Personally, I love Adam just the way he is, and I love his overt sexuality and flamboyance. But the music-buying public does judge singers on the persona they present. The AMA thing still lurks in Adam's past as a moment of poor judgement IMHO. It was too early, too presumptuous, too in-your-face for that time and place. "The public" in general had not gotten to know him yet, not seen his humor and engaging personality. Adam also lived an overt, public gay life before Idol and couldn't very well change into a more "gender neutral" public gay man. I don't think Sam ever took that risk. Sam's careful choices have paid off. He fills the arenas, gets the big guest gigs, sells the millions. He played it safe and has reaped the benefits. Adam has to still find a path that makes his music and his persona feel right to people who buy music. I agree that the AMA's hurt him in the US. But my goodness, Adam has been on US tv so often since then and has done nothing to offend anyone. What more can he do other than disappear all together to please some people? At this point, it is time for them to stop holding the AMA's against him. And no one wants another Sam Smith. I thought Troye was the one of the moment and he is not like Sam either. He just did SNL. I didn't like his singing and his attempt at sexy was not sexy, unless you like someone who looks 12 but there he was. I don't know what else he can do. It all revolved around some sort of breakthrough that exposes him once again to public that rarely sees him or hears about him. That breakthrough might be a song, a stage or movie role, appearance on TV somewhere. (BTY, you are absolutely right. He has done his share of American TV. But it seems that foreign TV shows have a lot more fun with him. They bring out his personality and present him as very likable.) It basically comes down to "that song" that we all hope is coming. Judas could help, despite the doubts of some. It couldn't hurt. The "playing it safe" ship has sailed for Adam. Even without the AMA-type antics, he still carries that with him, just a little. His fans know how much he has to offer onstage, singing, acting, speaking, joking. There must be way to get all that talent out there.

Makes more sense.

At this point, it is time for them to stop holding the AMA's against him. I think Adam will benefit from longevity and like a fine wine will grow better with age. I still feel that he will be iconic and is already heading in that direction...Infact the AMA performance seems rather tame to some. Wish I could find the article on amazing AMA performances.. Adam was one of them.. Maybe the AMA kiss helped to change the face of gay love and affection shown on TV,movies and yes music.Adam is a force for change because he refuses to be anything but REAL. To add. Sam Smith is no longer being anything but authentic.. He has said in an interview, picture of him in heels, that he feels as much a woman as a man.. IMO,There has been a subtle shift in popularity since .just saying

I have a surprise/birthday gift for y'all. Angelina Kalahari and I had a lively discussion about the recent QAL tour and Adam's growth as an artist. She just uploaded the first part on YouTube. I haven't even had a chance to listen yet, but I am excited to share Angelina's perspectives and thoughts. (Please excuse the sometimes dodgy sound quality, but we were chatting across the Atlantic Ocean.) www.youtube.com/watch?v=2DZ8FFeeNWs&feature=em-uploademailThanks a lot you both for this! Much appeciated.

Jablea , valid point. Our fandom may have varied opinions but likely we all have the same hopes and dreams for Adam. This one thought crossed my mind just now... may be they are holding off with the announcement of a real life gay Judas, in order to avoid some flack that could drag out way too long. Just my opinion. But if they think there will be flack for casting a gay artist they probably won't cast one. If Adam gets the part, I doubt they will make it all about his sexuality. I could be wrong but I hope not. His fans might tho. When he sang "Girl Crush" on a country award show, there was hardly a peep about his sexuality except from fans. Most were raving (including the country audience) about how great he was. Why do you think his fans would make it all about his sexuality? I certainly don't expect any mention from the JCS peeps, if Adam gets the part, but I thought about the possibility this morning that some religious groups might have something to say. This is pure speculation, of course, and I am probably just overthinking after reading the Huffington Post article very carefully.

For those of you who are interested in the technique and physiology that goes into Adam's sound, Angelina analyses it in some detail in part 3, around 6:45. youtu.be/5DimjFHsdkc?t=6m45s
