I am a HUGE Katy fan & the part that was uncomfortable to me was that it was this guy's first kiss.

Tommy had already told Adam that he could do whatever on stage, so Adam already knew Tommy would be fine with it. Tommy loves the shock value if it. I don't know about the dancer. the dancer later said he was okay with it also. This, yeah. The biggest problem is the power dynamic. These weren't two participants on relatively equal footing, as it would be between two stage performers in the same act. The contestant had no power in the scenario, and Katy, the other judges, and the producers had it all. He obviously felt pressured to do what they were asking, in case it made or broke his chances of getting to the next round, and then Katy changed it up on him in addition to that. Casting couch. Besides the squick of it all from that standpoint, it's yet another case of the judges and the production constructing news stories around themselves. This one comes ready with its own soundtrack, courtesy of its main actor.

But Adam was very much in the power position no doubt about that. But I didn't think that was a big deal either.

It's a relatively short season, shorter than usual. Hope they book him soon so that the date is locked in.

I actually had no problem with the kiss and found it somewhat cute, which proves a point I think. The issue with "power dynamic" does get overlooked.

But Adam was very much in the power position no doubt about that. But I didn't think that was a big deal either. They were casting the show and Katy was one of the cast gatekeepers, so... yes. Benjamin, the contestant, was obviously feeling uncomfortable and pressured even as it was happening, and yet Katy and everyone else in a power position in that room not only persisted but escalated it. This isn't only how it came across onscreen, it's also how he described it. I don't see how Adam kissing Tommy is relevant to this discussion, frankly? I wasn't talking about him? In any case, as a working band onstage, they apparently had pre-arranged consent about physical/sexual behavior onstage. If Adam were asking for sexual contact and Tommy felt he had to consent or else be fired, then that would be the same issue. sizzling63 I'm not trying to target anyone here whose opinion I disagree with. I'm just responding to the general conversation.

This isn't really on-topic anymore, I guess, but in the interest of clarity on the matter of consent, Benjamin said this:
That doesn't remove the issue of the power dynamics at play in this situation, or the more general social/cultural problems (think of how differently this would be perceived, with or without "consent," if the genders were reversed), but I take back what I said about the consent aspect for his case, since he claims to have been fully aware of it, at least as a possibility.

Thanks for providing a bit more clarity, sarah. It isn't new to me that reality shows get edited, but again I find it quite startling how a story or situation can get twisted for maximum impact.
