Nightowl, I love the video. Made me happy as hell and loving Adam for what he brings to my life. Thanks for the laugh and happiness.

I agree. Idol was more about the contestants even when they started to hire celebrity judges. The reason they stopped producing stars was because the viewers became set on choosing the same type of bland winners who were not star material. Then a lot of people just stopped watching or caring and the press was not interested. The press rarely mentions anyone past Adam and those before him. It was as if Idol stopped existing after season 8, lol. After that point, the only one thriving was Seacrest cause he had so many different types of deals and opportunities going on. I was so heart broken when Adam didn't win I never watched again. He was the favorite for weeks and something went wrong. Don't know what but I really felt he got screwed. He went on and did fantastic anyway but I was done! I think part of what happened was tho everyone was talking about his big talent, there was also too much focus put on his sexuality. Adam was doing great until it came to the last two. That allowed Danny's fans, and many others who had previous favorites, to vote against him. But I really think Idol wanted him to win. It would have changed their image. But in the end, the votes against him backfired anyway. Adam became a star, the press loved him and the winner and several from other seasons were eclipsed. Some of their fans were foaming at the mouth over all the attention and support he was getting. That was not the outcome they wanted. The shows are about entertainment but it helps their promotion if they produce stars. They all want that. Even TV would love to have stars with achievements like Carrie, Kelly, Daughry, Adam, JHuh, Kat. And the press makes a point of letting them know, they don't.

Sadly, the Voice is never about the contestants and always about the judges. Feel badly for the singers. At least Idol pretends the contestants are the focus.... I agree with your description of Idol. This discussion made me think of this video I saw a while back. It's a bit long, but worth watching for those interested. They mention Adam a few times as one of the standouts, but the main focus of the video is how it started and what it became, both concerning the judges and concerning the contestants. They also deal with "textgate" (Adam losing S8, at 15:30) as the jumping-the-shark moment for the show. They make a good point (starting at 11:50) about how professional the contestants got as the years went on, but I don't think that was something the show shouldn't have done, necessarily. The whole "American Dream" aspect of the show is that some innocent in a rural town will be discovered fresh and raw, but that narrative discards the reality of how many young people tried to pursue a career in the industry and have become starving artists who often fall through the cracks. Like Adam (and Melinda Doolittle, etc.). Those undiscovered talents deserve a shot in the limelight, too, although I understand the pressure that puts on singers who are genuinely raw and inexperienced.

I like The Voice. And none of these shows are about the contestants, it is not to find a "star", it is a form of entertainment. If it was about the contestants Simon Cowell wouldn't have become a star. Water cooler moments were as much about what he said as it was about the singing. If it was about the best singer, Adam would have won. Since then I just watch these shows for the entertainment. I will never have another horse in the race since the race is usually rigged. Either by the producers and how they package the contestants or by the idiot people voting I will never invest in anyone else on one of these shows. Just to give you some idea how invested I was in Adam, I was driving across the country from Wisconsin to Colorado, to Nevada and then Arizona with my aging mother because I wanted her to see some of America. She was from Canada and had never seen much here. Anyway, to make my point, I made sure we were checked in to our hotel room every night by 7:00 so we could watch the show. I never missed a night of voting! cheriemelissa, you sound just like me. I could never invest the emotion, time and commitment to another singing show. I found my one in a billion in Adam and he has enriched my life many-fold. Everyone else is just clutter. That being said, I am NOT a grumpy person who doesn't listen to anyone else. I like lots of music and many singers. I just can't get invested in singing contests anymore.

So excited! I love all of the little snippets we've gotten so far. I hope the end product is as vocals- and live instrument-focused as he has described.
