But in re Adam's range, I remembered something that might be useful to the discussion so I'll momentarily delurk (in the hopes that it has not been previously posted and I missed it). Producer Rob Cavallo talked about it while recording FYE. He said, "He [Adam] can sing every note on the guitar, from the lowest to the highest, which is a very very unusual thing." Assuming he's talking about a standard 6 string guitar, I believe that has 4 octaves.
I was able to find Cavallo's interview and the relevant portion occurs in the first minute:

I think this is a mention that Adam would really appreciate, I wonder if he knows. I am going to go to YT and see if there are any of his skits.

Every time I try to articulate answers to the "what is it about Adam?" question, I start getting all spiritual and new-agey and end up feeling pretty OTT and silly. But Michael Slezak wrote an article that even though it's about a specific performance, kind of sums up the Adam 'experience' for me. music-mix.ew.com/2010/02/13/kradison-concert-nyc-highline-idol/Adam part: The crowd seemed to suddenly double in size the moment Adam took the stage for a set that can only be described as insane on every level. There were moments when you'd have believed the season 8 runner-up was 11 feet tall, the way he stalked and preened through uptempo numbers like "Sure-Fire Winners," "Strut," and "If I Had You," and that's not even acknowledging the gyrations! Adam doles out the hip-thrusts, the neck-twists, and the open-palm-to-the-pelvis shenanigans with an almost Tantric quality: His raw sexuality is so much a part of his show, it should get billing as an additional member of his band. But the over-the-topness of Adam's act wouldn't work if he didn't have the vocals to match. On "Sleepwalker," "Soaked," and current single "Whataya Want From Me," it felt like the force of his instrument could've filled a football stadium (sans microphone). Part of the reason Adam inspires such rabid fandom, I think, is that he's so aggressively outre that he erases any feelings of ridiculousness his ordinary fans might feel when singing in the shower or dancing in front of the bedroom mirror or just generally dreaming of breaking out of the humdrum of everyday life. He's at once fantasy and wish fulfillment. Dis him, dismiss him, ban him from ABC -- the dude is having way too much fun to concern himself with such trivial slights. He's a modern-day Pan for our TMZ times. I only wish I had been there.

(LOL I wanted to write more but unfortunately I can't express my feelings the way I want to in English) haha. I know exactly what you mean. It' s like having a 25 ingredients recipe in my mind and only 5 ingredients on the table in front of me. If we ever meet, the two of us, I expect an at least three hours long non stop conversation. Plus all these rot/burn, fish, major talks (although I enjoy them a lot (thank you everybody) and I learn things) make me nervous: am I writing what I am actually thinking or will I be misunderstood? The same for me plus I'm not eloquent at all. It ends in writing nothing or only short replies. But I will try to express what made me such big fan and an addict. ;D Adam changed my habits for listening music completely. Before Adam I haven't listened to music regularly. When I discovered a album I liked, mostly from rockbands (like paramore, panic! at the disco, my chemical romance) or most recently Florence and the machine, i listened to it a week or two nonstop until I got bored, then it did'nt even help to listen to another album of the band, 'cause i was bored by the voice and their style. Then I did not listen to music for months until a discovered a new album. But till now, i discovered Adam early may, I'm not tired of listening to Adam. well, sometimes it's a song I listened to often in a short period, but then I listen to other songs by him. I was never tired of listening to him. Another thing is, that I love to see live performances by Adam, recordings not so much (but i like them, too). With most of other singers it is the other way around. I cannot listen to them live for example on youtube. I cannot enjoy it. more often than not it doesn't sound good to me, I don't know why, because I know nothing about music theory, or sometimes it sounds boring. being at the concert myself is the big exception here, there I just feel the energy and it is so loud, i don't release it. It annoys me that i discovered Adam so late and i could not see him live, hopefully the next time he is here in Germany, i just need to find someone going with me. Adam makes me experience music in a way i have never done before and it is a good way. That the main reason I love him so much ;D

I choose to believe Cavallo re the range... after all he's been working with Adam on the TFM - the most bombastic and demanding piece, and I am sure he heard Adam sing both lower and higher that the final tracks show... I remember being so proud of Adam when this interview surfaced last year!
