Totally OT, but this reminded me of a term that you (in the US) all use that means the same as the UK version but verbally is a complete contradiction. You say "I could care less" where we would say "I couldn't care less". To me that's "I could not care any less about this subject than I do". You're usually so much more logical than us in your spelling and language that it took me some months to realise that it wasn't just typos from some peeps, but is actually the accepted term. So, contradictions occur even within the English language  , is correct, even here in the US. Oooooooooooops. I thought I had my assumptions confirmed when I read it in Mother Tongue, by Bill Bryson. He mentioned a few anomalies including this one. I thought 'ah, that's why'. Could it be an accepted variant ???????......or should I not believe everything I read  |
