Interview with Majors & Minors creator Even Bogart

THR: These kids get to spend time with real working artists, who do you have on tap and why did you choose them?
Bogart: We have Will.I.Am, Sean Kingston, Avril Lavigne, Leona Lewis, Adam Lambert, Jordin Sparks, Ryan Tedder, Brandy… RCA obviously brought a lot their people to the table, and we reached out to a lot of different people. Our main criteria was that they have some experience working with kids, but mostly we’re were looking for people who started out when they were young – doing, film, musicals... That's why Brandy is so important, because some of these kids want to be in acting, and she did it all at their age. When I started working with Kingston, he was 16. Avril was a kid. Adam Lambert, he went through the Idol thing. Also, each of them was chosen for something that they're known for. Like Adam digs into stage presence, Jordin works on vocal technique, Kingston, Ryan Tedder and Claude Kelly did a lot of songwriting mentoring. It's very calculated.
THR: You mentioned Adam Lambert, what are his strongest attributes when it comes to participating in a show like Majors and Minors?
Bogart: First of all, he's an incredible singer. His range is ridiculous. But he really wanted to work with the kids on stage presence and delivering the right performance. Even when you're not the person singing, what you're doing, how you're interacting with other people on stage, how you're being a part of it when you're not the center of attention. And then when you are the center of attention, how you grab that, run with it, and then pass it off. Because a lot of the performances are done as an ensemble. So, Adam worked with them individually on their movements and their presence. It was something he specifically said he wanted to do.
THR: You co-wrote “Down the Rabbit Hole” and "Broken Open" from his debut album, have you worked on Adam’s new record, too?
Bogart: We've been writing, but I haven't heard whether anything was confirmed or not yet.
THR: What can you tell us about his new music?
Bogart: He's really taken the reigns on this record. I haven't heard all the songs, but what I did hear, they're very Adam. They're deep and true. He was saying that he didn't want anything to be about "rebel this and that." Like on the first record, it was very much a let-your-flag-show kind of thing. This one is more specific to what's going on in his life and his relationships. I think he's making a very personal record, and he's kind of in control of it. I think he changed management, because he's definitely leading the charge on this record.
THR: He has one of the most successful post-Idol careers, are you surprised at how well he’s done in such a fickle music buying climate?
Bogart:There have been a handful of Idols that, while watching the show, I've picked up the phone, called my team and said, "I know there's, like, 12 episodes left, but I have to work with this person." And he was one of them. So, I'm not surprised at all. I think he's a star. I think the first record probably should've done even better. "Whataya Want From Me" was a huge hit!

Adam Lambert has dropped several album updates on us over the last couple weeks (thank you, Twitter!), including the promise that his second full-length is “coming early 2012!” with a single due out “next month (ish).” Needless to say, fans can hardly wait, but what might the follow-up to For Your Entertainment sound like?
We’ve been asking around and producer-songwriter Evan Bogart, who co-wrote the tracks “Down the Rabbit Hole” and "Broken Open" from Lambert’s debut and created the talent show Majors & Minors (premiering Friday on the Hub network and featuring Lambert as a mentor), offered a few clues, with one caveat: that even though the two have been writing together, he has yet to receive official word as to whether his work will make it to the finished product.
What does Bogart know? That “Adam has really taken the reigns on this record,” he tells The Hollywood Reporter. “I haven't heard all the songs, but what I did hear, they're very Adam -- deep and true.”
As for a unifying theme? “Adam was saying that he didn't want anything to be about ‘rebel this’ and ‘rebel that,’" says Bogart. “Like on the first record, it was very much a let-your-flag-show kind of thing. Bogart credits Lambert’s new management, in part, for giving him the creative freedom to pursue his own direction. Then again, Bogart, who wrote Rihanna’s “SOS” and Sean Kingston’s “Take You There” and brought the show Platinum Hit (featuring former Idol judge Kara DioGuardi) to Bravo, has been a diehard Glambert since the early rounds of American Idol season 8. “There have been a handful of Idols that, while watching the show, I've picked up the phone, called my team and said, ‘I know there's, like, 12 episodes left, but I have to work with this person,’” he says. “And Adam was one of them.”
Asked if he’s surprised that Lambert ended up being one of the most successful Idols to graduate from the show without winning, Bogart snaps, “Not at all! I think the first record probably should've done even better. ‘Whataya Want From Me’ was a huge hit! And Adam is a star.”
