I just hope that Adam sticks to his assertion that his voice will be more front-and-center this time. I like FYE, but my one complaint about it is too much production. I think that's common with Idol albums. My younger brother really likes Carrie Underwood, and gave me a copy of her first album. To me it sounded like a chorus of a thousand Carries trying desperately to compete with background music that refused to stay in the background. Too cluttered. I'm pretty sure I'll like anything Adam does as long as I can hear that amazing voice ringing out clear and true. I don't think it's just Idol,but so much of popular music now. I think it came sometime around the time that the producers became the power brokers in the business. They got these big boards with all the bells and whistles and felt they had to use every last one of them. Then when Edison invented autotune, it was like, "Oh cool! Now the vocalist can be as elemental as one of the instruments. Another sound maker that we get to play with." I'm sure many DID improve a mediocre vocalist, but when a tool like that runs amok, it can muddy an exceptional vocalist. Again, the phenomenal success of Adele brings an undeniable testament to the fact that there is no substitute for amazing vocals and when you HAVE that, why would you want to "dumb them down"? Sam Sparrow, Rico Love, Bonnie, Benny, etc. have all berted and flailed over Adam's vocal abilities. I think Adam probably pushed hard to executive produce as a layer of bargaining power to make sure the vocals don't get lost in translation. I truly think he gets the importance of it and I would HOPE the label does too. |
