Hi. Food for thought: See below an interview from ABC News with Roger Daltrey about the quality of singers in contemporary music. He also disses American Idol a bit. My impression is he thinks that having a distinctive voice is as important as (or maybe more important than) having a great voice. Excerpt: "A lot of the new people they choose on shows like 'American Idol' and things like that — I don't ever hear lead singers," he said. "They always seem to choose to pick people that are great singers, fabulous singers, but they've never got the voice that makes a great lead singer."
Daltrey, 67, went on to name drop some of music's best singers: "You hear 10 seconds of Rod Stewart, you know it's Rod Stewart. Ten-seconds of Mick Jagger, that's Mick Jagger. Ten-seconds of Eddie Vedder, you know that's Eddie."
English-born Daltrey says there is one exception in today's music scene: Adele.Link: abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/wireStory/daltrey-contemporary-music-lacks-lead-singers-14639465I actually agree with his basic premiss, although I think he's missing some newer singers but am too lazy to think of any. I've never been a fan of any singer just because they are technically great singers. I also agree about all the Idol winners, none besides Adam interest me. Kelly has an incredible voice, but it does nothing for me along with most of the mediocre voices on radio. And I'm going to have to hide behind a rock....but sometimes Adam's voice is too clean for me in his middle range unless he does something to color it which he can do brilliantly in many ways. In many of his pre idol videos, I appreciate them and how amazing his range is but I never would have become a huge fan from them. Just not my style. This is why I'm so grateful to Idol though, I think he worked really hard to shed the broadway label and explore what would he could do as a pop rock star, beyond what he accomplished with Zodiac or CV. And I think he got a lot of great feedback from the behind the scenes people and Slash telling him not to go too crazy improvising with the high notes because he sounds really cool in the lower registers. It reminded me of that Canadian interview where when asked about his range he said who cares, does it sound cool? Adam was one of the only Idols to come off that show and really made a go of getting out of the idol box to try and make something that "sounds cool" and succeeded to a large degree. But did he go too far away from "the voice" with the modern production? Once again he listened and learned and has said he wants the voice out front for the next one. One of the biggest challenges Adam must have is that his voice is so amazing and he has such a crazy ability to make it do whatever he wants, how do you choose? Do you have to choose at all? Could that be his trademark as a singer, being a chameleon? Or do you need that instantly identifiable sound? Would we ever want him to have a trademark sound? Can a modern pop dance record and insane vocals coexist? How many questions can I put in one paragraph? That's what makes following him so much fun. We have no Idea what to expect from his wardrobe, interviews, performances, albums or his voice. He has said his approach to singing has changed a lot in the last two years and it shows on his new album. I'm glad we don't know what to expect even if I have bouts of anxiety because of it. How dull the life of a Nickelback fan must be.

Am I doing something wrong or is the google universe and the 'media' completely ignoring last night's procedings?? I have googled adam and duggan in numerous configureations and come up with a few links to here and other adam sights but that is it. Usually these things are picked up and commented on pretty quickly...is it just because Adam did not adress it himself?
any ideas?

I think this came and went so quickly overnight, and Duggan not being a high-profile personality, it didn't register outside the Adam universe. I'm just so glad the media didn't pick up much on the Galliano tweets that I'm willing to give 'em this one too. I sure hope they pick up on the $1 Million fundraising achievement though!

Can a modern pop dance record and insane vocals coexist? How many questions can I put in one paragraph? Having a destinctive voice does not necesarily mean having a distinctive sound/style. Rod Stewart is an excelent example - his voice is totally recognizable whether it is on songs like "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy" or "Maggie May" or singing "Bewitched, Bothered & Bewildered" with Cher. The style he is singing in doesn't really have anything to do with recognizing it. For that matter, it really isn't that "good" a voice - but for some reason it resonates with many (including me ) Having such an amazing voice does mean that there is no "obvious" path for Adam to take interms of style - and I really hope that he will always be a chameleon! When I was applying to colleges and trying to pick a major I remember being a little jealous of the kids who were really good at a single subject. It was totally clear to them what path they should follow. There I was loving Math and Physics along with History and Philosophy - it was much more difficult for me to choose!
