Is it no wonder Adam doesn't communicate or show photos as much as we'd like. We have a zillion opinions on how he looks, who he looks like and how is clothes fit, etc. I'm just so happy to see him anywhere, any time, wearing whatever..I miss the man cause I love him,not because I want to judge him.Just saying and just my opinion. : awww melliemom....it's fun to discuss his new hairstyles/whatever - even if I say I'm not a fan of the shaved look, I still think he's THE MOST GORGEOUS CREATURE I've ever seen. All in fun. All in love. I don't think of it as "judging." I think of it as having some fun and discussing degrees of Adam gorgeousness amongst ourselves.

[looks around for cassie] I'm back. Hemorrhage makes it sound like there is copious amounts of blood. Not so. Think of it more like a bruise. Tiny blood vessels broken on or near the cords. But, as someone already said, vocal rest is absolutely necessary. Ah. I'll admit I was truly thinking about an Ebola-type hemorrage. [cue the horror movie music....] That said, Adam does really seem to switch around his shows if he's feeling under the weather, vocally. The nice thing is he seems to do it by giving more sexy moves as compensation. ;D

Hey cassie -
Taking into account what you just said a minute ago, what do you think Adam actually did - intervention wise - during that New York Nokia show where he admitted he "needed some medical help"?

[Mean Girl Alert] BTW, am I just old, or am I just being a complete and utter priss when I hope that Adele can use this time off to find the #$^%$ capital letters and punctuation marks on her damned keyboard?? :

I just read Adele's statement. It makes sense to me. She pushes her voice with all her performances while singing .... I don't mean to be a snob, but....while singing improperly. By that I mean doing things to get a sound that strain her cords. The problems started when she had the flu, probably causing swelling of her throat and cords, and coating them with thick mucus, making it hard for them to vibrate. She kept singing, pushing thru the illness, straining her cords more, until they finally gave out on her. Since then, for a variety of reasons, she has not given them sufficient rest and they remain sensitive to bruising and damage. the tissues are still weak, the blood vessels still fragile. And, while it sounds like she is doing good things to help her cords, and getting good advice, those things aren't magic potions to heal injured tissue. And, when she continues to perform she continues to re-injure her cords because of how she sings and because they are still fragile.
I am not blaming or criticizing her. Singing is her livelihood, and her joy. We have talked a lot about a singer having to take advantage of the momentum of the moment. It would hurt her career to just cancel all appearances and the tour. Like with so many things, we think that we can "get away" with pushing a little harder, enduring a little discomfort, "no pain no gain" mentality. Just push thru it. Well, it doesn't work that way with the voice. I am afraid that if she continues to sing the way she does now, she will continue to strain her cords and have problems. Hopefully she can take the time to fully recover, and then start working seriously with a vocal coach who can change bad habits in production.
IMO.

[looks around for cassie] I'm back. Hemorrhage makes it sound like there is copious amounts of blood. Not so. Think of it more like a bruise. Tiny blood vessels broken on or near the cords. But, as someone already said, vocal rest is absolutely necessary. Continuing to talk or sing only will make it worse. The blood leaking into the cords makes it more difficult for them to vibrate. So you push harder with breath to force them to vibrate. Which further strains and bruises the cords. It is almost always caused by misuse of the voice. Talking or singing or shouting too loud, for too long, pushing the voice to produce notes it doesn't want to produce. If the singer smokes, the vocal cords and surrounding structure may already have become irritated, making it easier to bruise or hemorrhage. How is it that Adele has had such trouble with her voice, and Adam sang 110+ shows and sounded better at the end than at the beginning? It is not luck. It is not the voice he was born with. His cords are not naturally more durable. It is his familiarity with his voice, with his technique, with his limits, with how to approach the low, mid-range and high notes. Adele has this sexy sounding, husky, chesty voice. It almost always sounds to me like she is pushing her voice. Straining to sing the notes. That most likely means she doesn't know about proper technique. Adam never sounds like he is straining or pushing his voice. THAT is because of the extensive training on how to use it properly. How to find the maximum resonance for each tone. How to support it properly thru breathing. He knows when to shift into chest voice, when to shift into head voice, when to shift into falsetto, so he can hit each note in the range without strain on the muscles or the cords. And, that ain't easy. I don't know many, or, frankly any people who have learned that without formal training. It's just not something easily discovered by accident. Add to that, Adam knows how to pamper and treat his voice. He is very frequently seen with a bottle of water, on and off stage, to keep the cords hydrated. And tea which soothes the throat and opens it up. He uses humidifiers to keep his throat moist. He usually refrains from alcohol while singing because alcohol not only dulls the senses, but dries out your throat and body. He doesn't smoke (well, cigarettes, and I would imagine he smokes other substances with moderation because of the irritation to the vocal cords possible). He warms up before singing, and will refuse to sing if he feels he is not warmed up. Just like you can injure a muscle if you exercise without warming up, you can injure your vocal cords if you don't warm up. Warming up clears away the excess crud and mucus in your head and throat, and tunes the muscles so that you can do the shifting of your voice to hit the wide range of notes he does. Adam also was smart enough to lower the keys of many of his songs so that there was less stress on his voice going for the glory notes. He also knew when to skip the glory notes if his voice was not feeling "right" that performance. He takes very good care of his instrument. Thank goodness. Yes, Adam was born with a remarkable physiology that makes some of those heavenly tones possible. The right chest, the right bone structure in his head, the right shape of the air cavities and sinuses, the right shape and size of his vocal cords. But, without the training he received he would not know how to use that physiology properly, how to access the resonance, how to shape the tone, how to put a little gravel or buzz into the sound without straining the cords. I heart you cassie! I always "feel" so much smarter after I read one of your posts.

ebay may have an automatic bidding procedure. For instance, you tell ebay the highest you are willing to bid, and then anytime anyone bids against you, they will up your bid in the agreed upon increments until it reaches your highest amount. Then if you are outbid the new bidder and their bid is listed. Make sense? Kinda hard to explain. 8-) ETA-we once bought a house this way on a realty bid site. fanoftheman, thank you. I thought that all bids would be listed ??? but I guess not...oh well. interesting to watch...

I know I said I would post something everyday but life threw me a curve when the lab I worked for closed. I have been lurking here because this is the place I come to that makes me happy. Everyone has such different ideas on what is sexy, not sexy, good look, not a good look and so on. But the one thing EVERYONE agrees on is that "WE LOVE THIS MAN"!! I will say that I have missed GELLY'S posts and pictures. I hope all is well and she is back soon!!

Hey cassie - Taking into account what you just said a minute ago, what do you think Adam actually did - intervention wise - during that New York Nokia show where he admitted he "needed some medical help"? Just guessing here. But, I would think: 1. Absolute vocal rest except for performance. 2. Decongestants to help clear away the mucus in his throat and head. 3. Vaporizer/humidifier to mechanically do the same. 4. Steroids to decrease the swelling of tissues. (NOT a long term solution, but helpful if the singer also does #5) 5. Adjusting the way he sings, the amount of glory notes, taking the melody down instead of up, easing off on some virtuoso riffs. (All of which I think he did that night) 6. Hydrating, hydrating, hydrating during the performance, with water and soothing, aromatic teas and honey.
