Actually I think #4 refers to straining to hit notes. That's how I interpret "obvious vocal effort". Wouldn't that be unpleasant though? It sure sounds unpleasant to me. That's one of the things I don't like about Bruno Mar's voice.

Seems like it would make the listener uncomfortable and have the opposite effect. I totally took "obvious vocal effort" to mean a male who is expending energy and passion – i.e., not phoning it in – to give a compelling vocal performance. Actually, I think it does mean singing with that straining, slightly strangled, pushing tone. When you listen to the "rock giants" who are touted to be legend, like Robert Plant, Steven Tyler and to an extent, Freddy, they all have that sound. Earlier someone posted a clip of Meatloaf, and he definitely sounds strained and pushing. So does Bruno Mars at times, and he is not hard rock. Adam does not normally have that quality to his voice. He may wail out a big, high note, but, at the same time, it sounds effortless and ringing. It is one reason some people say he does not sound like a legitimate rocker (Gene Simmons???) and why some of the really hard rock fans don't embrace Adam. He doesn't sound "raw" enough.

I don't know. I still respectfully disagree. Sure, that exists in rock, but they are talking about what is automatically compelling to our ear and the sentence is ambiguous. I still say it comes from a place of passion, not strained vocals.

Q102Philly Q102 Philly Ouuu @adamlambert is kicking @jamesmaslow's butt in our Hot Boy Bracket! The #Glamberts don't mess around! ow.ly/6O2F5I've been voting on this one because I have a soft spot in my heart for both Q102 and Z100. Without them, WWFM would not have had such a great start. So, if they want a few hits on their web site, for their advertisers, I am happy to oblige! Q102 was even playing the Aftermath Remix! They are Glamberts, I think.
