Actually, I think it does mean singing with that straining, slightly strangled, pushing tone. When you listen to the "rock giants" who are touted to be legend, like Robert Plant, Steven Tyler and to an extent, Freddy, they all have that sound. Earlier someone posted a clip of Meatloaf, and he definitely sounds strained and pushing. So does Bruno Mars at times, and he is not hard rock. Adam does not normally have that quality to his voice. He may wail out a big, high note, but, at the same time, it sounds effortless and ringing. It is one reason some people say he does not sound like a legitimate rocker (Gene Simmons???) and why some of the really hard rock fans don't embrace Adam. He doesn't sound "raw" enough. I don't know. I still respectfully disagree. Sure, that exists in rock, but they are talking about what is automatically compelling to our ear and the sentence is ambiguous. I still say it comes from a place of passion, not strained vocals. I agree. The "obvious vocal effort" wouldn't be a strained sound, which IMO would be very unpleasant. But rather the singer singing intensely enough that they convey extreme passion and intensity of emotion. I think of the "power rock" songs of the 80s, such as Total Eclipse of the Heart, where Bonnie Tyler seems to be pouring her guts into some of the notes. When you hear the singer sing with such intensity, your heartrate literally increases. And that's what I suppose makes for a catchy song.

I'm voting too! Q102 are definitely Glamberts - and the Philly stations along with Z100 really support Adam....I'll give them some hits!

I think they are referring to passion here also, but in most cases these passionate performances fall into the category of strained vocals. Adam is the only male in this genre that I have heard that doesn't strain. He is in a different league.

I voted on Q102 and couldn't help noticing that Adam "I never heard of that song but I'm sure you sang it better" Levine was only an Honorable Mention....didn't make the hottie lineup.

Thank you Zinnia and Mia for bringing the Nov. 10, 2010 Tutka too to Sauli Central. It was after the first pics of Adam and Sauli were published. Another hilarious Tutka-video is the one, when Katri fell in love with Adam (May 5, 2010) and Sauli hardly knew (or did he?) who Adam was: www.youtube.com/watch?v=4VMAwg1XNZE EDIT: Correction: The Nov 15 Tutka was after the pics were published.

I agree, and think that part of the appeal is a subconsciousness thing, voices that are a little raw, husky, lower or higher than speaking voices, slurred, or uncontrolled/strained by strong feelings sound like the way voices are altered by sex (or other forms of emotional desperation/being overwhelmed in the moment). The way Adam improvises on the acoustic WLL's plays with these sounds too, but without actually straining to produce them. ETA: also they are talking about sing-along favorites where as noangel points out you get swept up in the emotion and want to join in, not necessarily favorites to sit and listen too. My current inescapable sing-along song is Beyonce's "I was here" not the most original song in the world, but I can't help belting out the chorus at the end with her when I'm exercising to it.

So cute, thanks for posting, and evergreen too for posting this earlier. (I just now have a chance to watch) From Youtube comment:from 0:11 --> Katri: But Adam Lambert! He was so cute I mean I didn't even know who he was beforehand... Sauli: I saw that Katri has a photo with him in Facebook! Katri: He was so sweet and as Linda (one of the x-factor judges) said, only real stars are humble and really nice (and then something about finnish Idol -stars who are not humble)
