However, I thought they could not use songs without the permission of the writers, even if they own the recordings. Am I wrong? Permission was given when the master recordings were made would be my guess so I would assume that they have the right to use those master recordings but would still have to pay the songwriting royalties. That would be my assumption. I agree that Adam and Monte almost certainly granted the right to release these recordings when they signed the recording contract with Malcolm. Here is what appears to have happened.... Monte and Adam have/had a recording contract with Malcolm Welsford's company. They signed a contract giving Malcolm's company the right to record and release their music. In exchange Malcolm paid for the production, studio time and other musicians and recording expenses, and Malcolm agreed to pay Monte and Adam royalties. In addition, they would both get mechanical royalties as songwriters. Malcolm owns these masters and the right to release them, just like RCA owns the rights to FYE and the right to release them (under a license from 19R). There must be some greyness about the rights OR someone has worked very hard to keep this album from being released. In any case, I really can't see that it will hurt Adam for these to be released. They are old recordings and do not reflect where Adam is as an artist but IMHO are really quite good. I own similar early recordings for other artists and I believe that these kind of developmental recordings help fans understand where someone came from. Finally, it is not like we haven't heard this music. Many of these songs is on YouTube and on the Citizen Vein My Space page. There is not one track on the stream that I did not already own an illegal copy of. Personally, I would be happier to own legal copies and pay the people who created this music -- including Adam and Monte. JMHO YMMV.

About the Steve Cooke wikipedia thing, I think he (and the fans tweeting him and posting on his FB wall blaming other fans) seem to be confused/mistaken. You can read the Wikipedia articles for deletion on that account and it goes back to last Saturday, before this all blew up and was started and commented on by long-term wikipedia jack-of-all-trades editors who seem to have no connection to anyone's fandom. It looks like an unfortunate coincidence of timing of the kind of review that regularly happens with wiki articles. Fans backing up his mistaken assumption are just throwing fuel on the fire. ETA: BTW, if anyone wants to very diplomatically tell Steve this on his facebook page (I don't know how often he checks twitter, he seems to mostly post to twitter from facebook). I wouldn't be against it. (I would but my fandom facebook just packed in, grrr... I want that for the O awards voting!) I find this extremely frustrating. There is actual, digital proof that Steve Cooke's accusation is false. And yet fans are quick to side with him. If you take just a minute or two to click on the notes regarding his wiki page deletion, it's right there in print who was involved with the deletion, and it wasn't glamberts. There were two established wiki editors involved. The The only comments added that were not by those two, but instead were unsigned comments, are those that are disputing the deletion. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Steve_Cooke_%28musician%29Wiki editors take their job and the integrity of Wikepedia very seriously. They proactively check new pages and edits to make sure they conform to Wiki's rules. For example, if you look at the current page that lists all the artists and bands that have been marked for possible deletion, usually because they don't meet Wiki's requirements for notability, there are 35 in contention right at this moment in time. This is normal, Steve Cooke was not some lone victim being singled out. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Deletion_sorting/Bands_and_musiciansAs for Monte's involvement in this whole thing, things are so confusing that I really have no idea at this point, but I will say the more people that chime in to vociferously defend and sympathize with him on an Adam fansite when it is Adam who is clearly being screwed over by Malcolm at the very least, the more I feel bad for Adam that even some of his own fans seem to be putting Monte and even Steve Cooke first. Yeah, I tweeted Steve Cooke, but I think he needs a facebook comment or two. It's the first time I've been tempted to yell on twitter at a fan I don't follow (I won't though). Someone else pointed this all out very politely to a fan feeding the fire and pointing the finger at adam fans last night, she ignored it, and continues to pour oil on the flames in her comments to Steve Cooke today. Poor Steve Cooke honestly, this is just awkward.

I'll buy two copies of Adam 2 before I will ever pay for an album that Adam does not want released. In fact, I plan on going on a major gifting spree.

Oh good, good, good. Fun Adam tweets. Hope it puts everyone in a better state of mind. I don't think there is anything else to say about the whole bastard album mess that hasn't been said or speculated about. At this point, I'd prefer Adommy flailing than any more depressing conflict. Go ahead, throw stones, pretend it's about Adommy comment rather than just pent up hostility about the last few days. I don't mind. Oh, and ROLL TIDE! Hope Gators chomp on those LSU Tigers..... of course, it's it's only because of BSC standings. And would you look at this list, not a Bat Shit Crazy among them.... www.abbreviations.com/BCS

Here we are.
I'm lurking only - - I have absolutely nothing to contribute to this discussion over songs and contracts and agreements and who said what and it just makes my little head spin. I can't keep track. Maybe because I don't do Twitter and I don't know what has been said or not.
That being said (oops! I just made myself laugh!) I see us here angsting and I read what Adam is saying . . . he is talking about martinis and we are talking about betrayal among friends.
What am I missing?
