One of these things is not like the other. I love his music, but I'm just wondering, in what universe is Ray LaMontagne considered rock?]I mean, his CD God Willin' & the Creek Don't Rise won a Grammy this year for Best Contemporary FOLK Album. I actually think his sound is a wonderful mixture of many different styles and genres. But do these executives even know their artists, their roster? Ray could be considered Folk Rock. The song Beg, Steal or Borrow debuted on the Billboard Rock Songs chart. The record label must know that Ray's music fits into the rock category on some level, otherwise his single wouldn't have been grouped in with other songs on the BB Rock chart. Yep, that's why I mentioned that I consider Ray's music a mixture of many different styles and genres. But it's not rock in the same vein as the Foo Fighters, Kings of Leon, etc., which Corson lumped him in with. Doing so in that interview speaks to me of recalling the name of a chart category associated with an artist, but not a true understanding of the artist. The Billboard Rock chart combines harder rock with alt rock and triple A adult alternative (where Ray normally appears) all in one category. It startled me to hear the president of RCA (who was responsible for rejecting a Grammy-winning album) include him with those other groups. Made me wonder how deep of an understanding he has of his roster and the type of music his artists should be putting out. Ray's goal wasn't to compete on the Pop charts. Adam is a Pop artist and he wants to have hits on the Pop/HAC radio stations. He doesn't want to be a Rock or Folk artist. What was the final sales number for Beg Steal or Borrow? I'm not sure what you mean. Because Ray's goal wasn't to be on the Pop charts he didn't need to care whether his music was marketable or would sell well and he could afford to take the attitude he did? And if he was concerned about competing on a chart then he would do what the label asked? (He changed a song once before because the label asked him to do so, made it more upbeat, a little "poppier," and he regretted it.) Ray's position was that his label didn't understand his music or his audience and didn't realize that they actually would respond positively to the material and purchase it. The album sold about 250K in the first five months, which I think is a good figure for him. I don't know what the sales numbers were for "Beg Steal or Borrow." But it was his first number one song on the triple A charts. I realize that Adam and Ray are different artists in different markets. I relayed the story about the label's rejection of Ray's album and their failure to recognize the worth of the material he submitted to illustrate why I sometimes worry about the label's judgment calls and why I feel it's important for the artist to push back. I think that holds true whether the music is pop, rock, or folk. Why? They gave us Adam's first album, didn't they? Their goal is to make money, not lose it. Sure, they get it wrong sometimes. Everyone can't be at the top of the charts. L.A. Reid released Gaga from his label and now realizes what a big mistake that was, but he also made some smart choices with signing Bieber and Rihanna. I hope Adam listens to himself, but also is smart enough to trust those who have been in the business for years and years. Adam may have good instincts, but he is in a cut-throat business and he is still a fairly new artist. I love FYE. I think it would have been a better album if it were even more "Adam"--if "Down the Rabbit Hole" were on it rather than one of the other songs (I don't have to imagine what the label said about that since it ended up as a bonus track) or if "Aftermath" had been produced differently originally, etc. I don't expect Adam to rely solely on his own judgment. As I said, I'm glad he seems to have his own personal A&R team, and I think he will listen to veterans at his label both because he has to and because he is a natural collaborator. But, to me, they've proven themselves fallible over time, so when in question, I hope Adam will trust his own instincts. Sorry, didn't mean to go off topic with all the Ray stuff. Luckily it's a dead thread!

THIS! Popping in and out because of RL stuff, and now reading backwards through the thread. I jumped in with a bunch of generally silly comments without having read what came before, sorry. Anyway, this is pretty much where I was coming from. And very little doubt in my mind that Adam was trying to distract us/improve our mood. It worked for me! ETA: of course...maybe it's not all about *us*. Maybe he's just having some fun with a friend. ~For our entertainment ACK! I feel like I have to say...I'm just having fun/joking!!! I also had fun with NoAngel's post about seeing Adam nekkid and Chunkey's macro about Adam's soft serve hair, among others! And last week...the *bored* gif with Richard Gere and the gerbil is still making me LOL. Yes I'm perverted. And I like to laugh. Please stop Ksha :D! Your ETAs are making me laugh. It's like you've stumbled into the no man's (person's) land of the Adommy war zone and must be extracted immediately. I officially declare you a non-combatant and no stones should be tossed your way. (now, run for safe territory and we'll just pretend this never happened.) LOLOLOL!!!! Oh Mika, I think I love you!! *runnnnnningggg...*

Misha -- thanks for the great post. This part really struck me:
"I love FYE. But, to me, they've proven themselves fallible over time, so when in question, I hope Adam will trust his own instincts."
I agree that FYE would have been an even better album if it was more Adam -- but I think it is a pretty good album considering the pace at which it needed to be done. I also think that we forget how much easier it is to be a Friday morning Q-back.
We do not know what deal Adam's A&R Team had to make with collaborators. But it seems likely that at least a few of the album tracks involved some guarantees with the producers/writers so some slots on the album were probably allotted before they had demos.
Plus RCA and Adam had a dilemma with FYE that they do not have now. In 2009 Adam was most famous for his classic rock performances on Idol. He worked with two major rock producers, and there was some uncertainty that Adam would break thru on Pop radio. Now they know he will get CHR/Pop airplay if he has radio worthy songs and that fans will buy his pop tracks.
All that said, I would trade a few tracks to get Voodoo, DTRH and CLYG on my Adam album.

Hmmmm..... what is so very disturbing about the 'taste' tweet is what the Adommy crays have deluded themselves into believing they mean. Which of course is ADOMMY LIVES and is REAL! See, take that the rest of the fandom - we knew it was real all along. Their cray has just been justified (pukes) They have even gone to the urban dictionary to get the *wink, wink* REAL definition of salad dressing. Go there with a #warning if you must, but I don't recommend it. Who the fuck are these people??? They really disturb me :-/ >:( Catzmadam, I don't mean this as a criticism of you, but this is my thought on this subject. Adam provokes emotional reactions in most of us, but in this case, seriously, who cares? Why does this bother people so much?? *They* have gone to the urban dictionary JUST like the rest of the fandom does over anything potentially salacious that Adam says that ISN'T Tommy related. And it seems VERY likely to me that Adam knew full well that he would get that reaction. Who knows why he did that, maybe for fun, to lighten the mood or change the focus. And frankly, it IS more fun than speculating about Monte. At least for me it is. (Of course, that's all easy for me to say because I would love it if there WERE something between Adam and Tommy -- purely hypothetically and from a libidinal perspective of course) ;D Okay, put down the stones. I KNOW it's a fantasy. *closing eyes, hitting 'post'* ksha518 You're asking : "Why does this bother people so much?? " "Who cares?" Before I answer you why it bothers me VERY VERY VERY MUCH, I have to say that I have NO problem, NON what so ever about any kind of "shipping". Like you say it's fun and hot just to dream, so therefore I'm talking not about you. But JUST TO DREAM. I wouldn't care if the discussion was only between them. But I DO care because of the HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE, tweets that they send EVERY DAY to Adam and Tommy. HORRIBLE. HORRIBLE. DELUSIONAL. FRIGHTENING. I hope Adam and Tommy are using the block button regularly. I wouldn't want to see those tweets EVERY.FUCKIN. DAY. Am I mad about them? YES I AM. >:( And the worst part is that they are GROWN women. They are delusional, frightening and they deserve to be in an asylum.

Gelly babe - I so you. You just said everything I wanted to - only better-rer. Most <<<< Adommy cray doesn't bother me - but there are a few select ones that frighten the crap out of me because IMO it goes beyond pulling chains and pushing people's buttons - it just is - in any dimension/universe/world/RL situation so psychotically unhinged, on every level, that yeah I worry for these people in their real lives. And at the end of the day, I don't know WHY it worries me, considering my own current, unhinged real life situation right now with a vindictive neighbour harassing and persecuting me for something I haven't done - but it does. The human psyche in its many manifestations, whilst having no formal training or educational base to draw from, simply just fascinates me. Just ~pontificating on a dead thread *slurps more bourbon*
