Overall positive review, but I took exception with these 2 sentences.. "To be clear, Lambert is no Freddie Mercury and he’s the first to tell you." "And his soaring vocals don’t fully imitate Mercury’s, but rather suggest them, in the best possible way." And no mention of WWTLF, even though he tweeted at the time.. @rossraihala Adam Lambert sounds pretty incredible singing Who Wants to Live Forever. That second quote got to me, too. Not only does Adam not try to sound like Freddie or sing the song like Freddie did, but his voice sounds very different from Freddie's. Several times I have seen folks comment that Adam sounds almost as good as Freddie. As if that is a huge compliment. What are their ears hearing? Adam's voice is better than Freddie's live in many ways. With Adam's training, his voice is more consistent; it almost never cracks, while that was a problem for Freddie. Adam has more dynamic range, from tender and delicate to powerhouse, while Freddie, from what I have heard of his live recordings, had less flexibility. Adam is more able to sustain notes and phrases. Freddie, for much of his time performing live, struggled with damaged cords, probably due to incorrect technique, smoking, drugs, and illness. As a result, Freddie's onstage range was limited. Adam's is much broader, and again, more consistent. Adam's voice is also more resonant, warmer, richer, and less strident than Freddie's. Freddie's voice was raw with a rasp at times. Adam's tone is crystal clear. The sound is more pleasing to me, but I accept that some folks prefer the sound of Freddie's voice. But, from a vocal technique perspective, trained singers and coaches would tell you that Adam's voice is "better." So, it just gripes my butt to read people praise Adam as singing almost as well as Freddie did. Not up to Freddie's standard, but impressive nonetheless. Grrrrrr. The legend of a dead rock star icon looms large, doesn't it? IMHO.

I will put it this way. So while I'm not a long time Queen fan(I was born 4 months prior to Freddie's death) I can only put it to you this way. I think when people compare Freddie and Adam I honestly don't think most are sitting there and comparing the two in terms of live. I think they are comparing Freddie's recorded version to Adam's live version. Why? Well for me prior to the show despite really loving Adam on idol and even I myself at the time said damn he sounds good singing Queen. Freddie's recorded version is drilled into my head so for me i was afraid how I would take Adam singing the songs. They obviously wouldn't be as I know them. They would be a much different take. Luckily for me I never sat there and said well he's almost as good as Freddie. Because I knew what Freddie sounded like live. Actually I think pre 1975 Freddie sounded amazing live but after that his voice was up and down live whereas Adam's isn't he has a different lifestyle he has a different set of vocals which are not damaged(Freddie refused surgery for his nodules out of fear he would lose his voice completely) and finally what hit Freddie on the last tour which he at the time didn't know about was obviously his illness.

You are probably right. Folks are used to Freddie singing the recordings of those iconic songs. Adam sounds different, and that could be jarring. Folks prefer the familiar. For me, it is like ..... ice cream. I love ice cream. As a kid, mom would buy a gallon tub of vanilla. The cheapest she could find. We had it for dessert almost every night. It wasn't until I was an adult that I had some Haagen Dazs gourmet ice cream. WOW! So rich. So creamy. Not too sweet. Great mouth feel. And so many exotic flavors to choose from. Did I say, "This doesn't taste like the ice cream I have eaten, but it is pretty good. Almost as good as what I had as a kid."? Hell, no. I said, "This ice cream is divine! Food of the gods. I am never buying the bargain stuff again!" That is Adam's voice to me.

Seems these reviewers rarely do research or at least read an interview or two, to see what Adam, Brian and Roger have said many times about Adam not trying to imitate Freddie in any way. I was torn whether to RT and "like" the review because of those lines. Maybe someone whose up to the task will inform him.
