The Shaman
10.26.11 By juniemoon
Many of my favorite shamans are rock stars. They probably don’t even know they’re shamans, but they know how to get to ecstasy and back and how to take others with them. They may not have a license, but they know how to drive. – Gabrielle Roth, author of Maps to Ecstasy: Teachings of an Urban Shaman
Who wants to dance? – Adam Lambert
I might be the least likely person on this site to write this particular essay. When it comes to religion and spirituality, I’d have to say that I’m largely a skeptic. I don’t attend church, and I ran screaming away from yoga when my instructor decided we had to chant in a foreign language (if I’m gonna chant I at least want to know to whom I am chanting and what it is about). When someone tells me they’re a Christian I usually check to see if I still have my wallet. Probably the incident that best sums up my life-long approach to metaphysical matters occurred when I first met a co-worker named Priya (who has since become one of my oldest and dearest friends). I was showing Priya a bit about how we did things around the office when I noticed a picture on her desk of a wholesome-looking young woman who was both pretty and exotic:
Me: Who’s that?
Priya: Oh, that’s my guru. Would you like me to tell you about her?
Me: No, thank you.
However, over the course of the year, I’ve noticed many people using spiritual language to evoke their feelings about Adam. The word that came up most often was “shaman.” After a while, and especially as I worked on my “Adam the Artist” series (see my ALF page for more), I started wondering if they were on to something. What was a shaman anyway? Could an entertainer – however personal and meaningful his art – have a spiritual connection with his audience? Or was this just another example of the cult of celebrity?
According to Webster’s, shaman is a Buddhist concept that refers to a “priest-doctor who uses magic to cure the sick, divine the hidden, and control events that affect the welfare of the people.” I am going to assume that in Adam’s case, we are mostly talking about a mysterious ability to “divine the hidden” – that is, to make us see things that were previously unseen, with a little bit of healing the sick-at-heart thrown in for good measure.
According to Gabrielle Roth, author of author of Maps to Ecstasy: Teachings of an Urban Shaman, shaman figures are sorely lacking from the lives of most of us in Western society. She defines a shaman rather simply as a “mapmaker,” a person who provides direction and pointers to people who are discontent with their everyday lives and want to understand and change their inner selves. Roth says that the average person is bombarded with so many stimuli that their minds can never be at rest. They find it impossible to meditate. But they can dance.
I was interested to read about the effect of dance on the body. If you move the body, not competitively, not with the goal of being “good,” but merely to enjoy the feeling of the music, you can find surrender. To your own heartbeat and your own breath. Twenty minutes of dancing can still the “chattering crickets in our heads.” Moving the body, by resting the mind, can lead the mind in a new direction. If the mind moves then our hearts can move. Then our souls and our spirits.
By this definition, there may be something to this shaman business after all! There are several things about these ideas that intrigue me in relation to Adam. First, they do not require that Adam himself be in possession of special wisdom. With no disrespect intended at all to those who feel differently, I don’t think that he does. I think he’s a great guy with a lot of self-knowledge for someone so young, but he has also made bone-headed decisions, said dumb or hurtful things, and in general puts on his (oh so fine) pants one leg at a time – just like anybody else.
But Adam the mapmaker does not have to have special wisdom if he has the special ability to make us dance. Adam’s own dancing onstage is passion embodied, the very picture of the life force! And Adam has consistently in recent interviews and Twitter parties emphasized that dance tunes can be as personal as ballads. He’s also been working on “funk” in recent collaborations – and the best definition of funk I have seen called it “music that makes you move your body in ways you can’t practice.” Adam’s embrace of dance jibes with something interesting in Roth’s book, which says that dance is a way for all people to get in touch with the more feminine side of their natures.
All of us – men and women alike – have been trained to live in a hyper-masculine, analytical, results-oriented world, where we ignore our own instincts and needs. In most of our workplaces, we are treated essentially as a brain floating in a jar. These days, we don’t even take time off for illness or to wear special clothing to mark a death. When my mom was on her deathbed, my sister’s boss even asked her to give a time estimate on when the death would occur so he could better plan the monthly assignments. When we deny even the most basic instincts, we lose track of how to love and give to others and how to figure out our own wants and needs.
Is it any wonder then that some of us would be attracted to the idea of something or someone who could help balance this out? The embrace of dancing and music, art and poetry, can help you balance out your energy, reconnect with your pounding heart, and ground you again in your own body. Roth says not just anybody can help us reach this electric state where we start to build a bridge between reality and our dreams. A shaman, she says, needs “an androgynous, edge-walker kind of consciousness, which doesn’t belong in a patriarchy or a matriarchy.” Another passage is worth a longer quote because it sounds so much like Adam:
Shamans are really technicians of ecstasy. They move between worlds. As for how you become a shaman, either you are one or you aren’t. Either you can go into ecstatic states and take others with you, or you can’t. … Many of the shamans of our time, like Patti Smith, have gone into rock and roll, followed the beat, becoming dancer, singer, actor, poet, healer, all in one breath.

In this recent interview, Adam describes his current fashion look as "a shaman on a ship to the moon."
Speaking only for myself, I know I found some of this rebalancing last year through Adam, and even took it a little further, getting to know myself better and making some reconnections between the body, heart, and mind. I also have to say I’ve backslid during this year by not making the connection that it wasn’t actually Adam who was doing these things for me. Adam is not a guru-daddy who can show me the way. All he can do is give me the opportunity to take to my own two feet. The rest is up to me.
So what do you think? Has Adam helped you feel more connected to life than you were before? Has Adam had an effect on your soul? Has anything about your inner self surprised you, either in a good way or a bad way?
