I don't like surprises. Never have. And I could never quite put my finger on it, until this recent frustration I've experienced and other people's reactions. It's very much like the discussion we had several months ago about who reads spoilers and who does not.
In this connection, I see surprises as a good thing. As I see it, a "surprise" performer in a (tv) event tells two things: Either the event is so big that they can afford to not use some really major name while advertising the show, wanting to truly make it a surprise, or, the event is so big that their strategy is to refrain from exhausting the audience with their army of names and thus keep some of the semi-big names out of their advertising.
Realistically speaking, I think that they have left Adam's name out because the performance he is joining is a Queen tribute, not Adam Lambert With A Really Nifty Backing Band.
EMAs probably have a gazillion performers, and Adam will probably be performing about a half of a song. As the pre-event advertising goes, he just happens to fall outside the Big Names One, Two, Three and Four that they'll focus on.
(Disclaimer: I'm not intentionally berating Adam here, I know he is one of the best singers there. I hope that all the performances are live so the audience can use their ears to make their own judgement )
And about the one-off show rumor tweeted: I think that the tweeter took the "play us a couple of songs"-tweet (probably meaning a single listening party for the radio & industry) and intentionally twisted it to sound like a concert.
