I think Adam would still have a solo career even without Queen. When Trespassing went #1, but had no hits from the album, even with only 12 or more one-offs in the US and a successful international tour, Forbes reported he made 5 million. He was on the list at #3 of the highest earning Idols that year. He topped the list with Queen earnings on the last year they had it for Idol but he made it every year that they had a list before Queen. And yes Queen was good for him and only Adam can decide if it was worth it for some solo trade-offs. But trying to say he would have no career without them makes no sense. And saying that Queen is the reason he did not get much radio play or on huge streaming playlists makes no sense either. It is frustrating but the bottom line is his labels did not come thru for him. That was not the fault of him fronting Queen. And I don't expect being indie will suddenly break thru if he could only get Queen out of the way. He has done well but we all know there were roadblocks that were hard for him to overcome. But he made 6M and 5M on two solo tours before Queen. But yes QAL made things a heck of a lot better for him financially and with exposure. But when non-fans crow that he would have no career without QAL, that is just willful ignorance and envy mainly from supporters of other Idols, imo. He was not going to top the charts with or without Queen but he has a very good and lucrative career. And he had that before Queen but Queen kicked it up in a major way. Solo and QAL are BOTH parts of his career and trying to make it either or is not something he wants to do. Adam's choice but I think it has been a brilliant one.

The thing for me is: Barely anyone of the many fans from Europe, whom I know personally, would be a fan, if Adam hadn’t toured with Queen. That’s how I and they found him. I only remember 2 fans, whom I’ve spoken to in the queue before a solo concert, who knew him before QAL. There must be more, but even when I look at the active members in this forum: my impression is, that most of the non-US fans only got to know Adam through Queen. As for the labels: I have the strong impression, that they did try. But Adam is a unicorn, who doesn’t want to do, what they tell him. And too many radio stations didn’t want to play that unicorn. I remember him doing all the radio promo in the US, when he released TOH. It did not help him much at all. But that’s not the fault of the Label. They do exactly the same with other big artists and the radios play them. I‘m happy with Adam’s career. QAL and Solo. I think that this unicorn is simply not someone, who is appealing to the masses. 2 labels tried to. Adam tried by toning himself down. It didn’t work, so he accepted it and is now doing what he likes to do. Doing that, he has lost fans, who aren’t into Adam’s new music or „too gay“ style. (Not my quote). But he’s also gaining new fans, because of it. And these fans will more likely stick with him, because they are fans of the real Adam.

I'm one of the German fans who knew Adam before Queen! They played his "For your entertainment"-video regularly in a music-show on Danish-TV (which we can watch here in Northern Germany) in January 2010, and I really liked it, and so I got interested in Adam ...!
After "Whataya want from me" got released here in Germany a few months later, I immediately bought the FYE-album and played it several times every day during the first year, lol!
And I even attended the Glamnation-tour concert in Hamburg in November 2010!
I also know several other German fans who follow Adam since the beginning of his career (from the German Adamnews-forum), but I agree that there are also many others, who only got to know him later through Queen!

I think it is wonderful than many discovered Adam thru Queen. But there are others, like Betty, who knew him before that. It is not about what one person or their friends knew personally. His record tells the story. And his international tours were pretty much sold-out and lucrative for him before Queen. Of course the Queen tours were much larger and a good thing for him.
FYE album. Charted in 20 countries/top 10 in 7. #16 in Germany. Platinum in 3 countries/Gold in 2. He also won the Hungarian Grammy for FYE. WWFM Top 10 in 18 countries. 2-2Xplainum/1-platinum/3 Gold in different countries including Germany He was also invited to perform at that huge rock festival in Russia because they had heard about him.
Trespassing went #1 in the US and top 10 in 8 countries. He won 3 awards in China during that time. He also filled two area shows in South Africa. Many one-off US and international tour, all with no hits from the album.
These numbers are not huge but he clearly was known and successful before Queen and was doing well. And yes it is up to the labels to get the artist radio play in the US. I don't know about other countries. But for those of us who have been following Adam from the beginning, we have seen the difficulties. And he was not too gay or doing anything to keep himself off the radio. Things are changing some now but he is no longer on a major. But he is doing great with his career which include solo and QAL so we can all be happy about that.

nightowl and betty , I appreciate your feedback from the perspective of German fans, and I very much agree with nightowl on her assessment of Adam's career. The way I see it.. Adam established a long time ago that he is quite the unicorn and not for everybody, despite some attempts to appear more mainstream, and I find it interesting that more than a decade after he launched his career we are still discussing the same "issues". Nothing wrong with that of course. From my POV Adam has had a decent share of opportunities, more than others and less than some, and I think at the end of the day he should be happy, it looks like he is. Of course we always want more for him as we know he deserves it, but like for anybody else out there, life isn't always fair and for an artist to make it to the very top it takes way more than a perfect voice. I think Adam has done pretty darn well for himself considering that he likely hasn't been willing to compromise too much. I fell in love with him on Idol mostly because of his voice and I have stayed a fan as there is always something that totally draws me in about him and his music and the way he sings and performs. Still, I haven't loved everything and sometimes I choose to overlook things. "Velvet" is one example. I love the music so much, yet I would prefer a different look. Thankfully, there is a strong pull that comes from his voice and the new music he gave us.

I think the main differnce between Adam with or without Queen would be more solo little Side Projects like judiging in competition shows, maybe a stint in a muiscal on broadway, more tv show guest spots like in Glee, something more like rhps...those kind of Things...just my guess and opinion...
...even If He had gone back to Musicals...wasn't that His Plan in the First place anyways? Didnt He say He was hoping to give himself a boost and get lead roles and Not be the understudy forever.
