GRINGOZ MAGAZINEAdam Lambert: A journey through time to the 70s Has become known Adam Lambert through his participation in the eighth season of the American show American Idol , then his career went through the roof. He has released three studio albums containing hits like Ghost Town and has been on tour with rock icons Queen since 2014 . Now his fourth album Velvet (2020) is in the starting blocks and we had the honor to talk to him about the album and the upcoming tour.
Gringoz: It's been over ten years since you appeared on American Idol, now you're releasing your fourth studio album. Half of the songs have already appeared on Velvet: Side A (2019) , what made you decide to release so many songs before? Couldn't you just wait to show the songs to your fans?
Lambert: I think this step should contribute to the retro feeling of my new songs. Much of the album was inspired by the 70s, and releasing it in half is a tribute to how music was recorded during that period. Records have two sides, so you would traditionally hear the album in half. Also, it's been a long time since I released new music, so I was happy to finally be able to show what I was working on.
Gringoz: How did your fans react to the first half of the album? Do you actively look around for opinions online or do you no longer care?
Lambert: I think the fans liked it. Of course, there is a wide range of opinions on every type of art that is put into the world. I stopped worrying about what's going on in the charts or what's going on. My new music is exactly what I wanted to do. The result of my album is a collection of music inspired by many different genres. I hope fans like it, like to hear it and take some of it with them. I am not interested in critical opinions.
Gringoz: You have been on tour for a long time in the past few years. Did that have a negative or positive impact on Velvet's writing process ? Is it more difficult to find inspiration when you're only on the go?
Lambert: Inspiration is everywhere. Every feeling and every experience. Queen inspire me every day, Freddie Mercury inspires me. Being able to perform with legends like Brian May and Rodger Taylor and perform hymns with them every night is a great inspiration. Of course a tour can be very intense, there is not much time to write or record songs, but when I am on the road for so long I find inspiration everywhere. I'm lucky that the tour allows me to visit so many different places.
Gringoz: We could already listen to Velvet (2020) and it is a really successful album. Is there a song that you are particularly looking forward to?
Lambert: I am very happy to release the title song, Velvet . There will be a very funny, creative video and I really hope you enjoy it. A lot of people who hear the album have different favorite songs on it, so I can't wait to put them all together on one album.
Gringoz: A while ago the single Roses was released, on which you worked together with Nile Rodgers. What was it like to work with him and what did this collaboration mean to you?
Lambert: Nile is great, a musical genius. I've worked with him before and, as always, it was a pleasure. There are a lot of 70s influences on the album, so it's really great to be able to work with such an iconic funk musician. He is a real genius.
Gringoz: The release of your last album was five years ago. Would you say that you and your music have changed? Did you develop yourself personally and is this development reflected on the album?
Lambert: Definitely! I have grown up and know how my music should sound now. I want it to really sound like me and be a collection of the things that inspired me. I have never had so much creative freedom and I now had the opportunity to show it in the lyrics. This album is the most Adam Lambert sounding album I've ever written.
Gringoz: You are traveling in Europe in August and early September. Are you looking forward to it? Are you still enjoying touring or is it sometimes exhausting?
Lambert: I always look forward to coming to Europe. Every country that I visit is so different and yet the fans everywhere are really great. I think that's what keeps you going when you're always on tour. You may be exhausted, but when you step on stage and all the smiling faces sing along with your songs, you don't care. It's about this very moment and getting together with the fans to celebrate music and the feeling it conveys.
Gringoz: The Velvet Tour starts at the Manchester Pride. As part of the LGBTQ + community and founder of the Feel Something Foundation , this is probably a significant event for you. How does it feel when so many young members of the LGBTQ + community look up to you? Especially considering how your sexuality was discussed during your time at American Idol, do you think the situation for LGBTQ + artists has improved in the past decade?
Lambert: It is a great honor to play at Machester Pride and I am happy to start the tour at such an event. I had my coming out with my family and friends before my time on the show, but my sexuality made headlines. It was like having to come out a second time, but this time to the public. I think that's still the case, but I'm glad LGBTQ + artists are becoming more visible. The fact that Sam Smith is now mainstream, just like Christine + the Queens , Years & Years , Olly Alexander. I think a lot has changed and it would be different for me if I only became a public figure now. Nevertheless, nothing has changed, you still have to "come out". That's why I made it one of the Feel Something Foundation's goals to get rid of the need to come out. We need to get to a point where we can say "that's me" without explaining or making a statement.
Gringoz: Is it a big difference to be on stage with Queen or alone? Is the audience different, maybe more difficult to convince?
Lambert: I my queen are queen, you know? At Queen concerts you see people from all generations who like the same music, which is very rare for concerts. So it is a big difference to my solo concerts! The Queen concerts are simply about celebrating this legendary music, the band and Freddie's life and his lyrics. For these reasons, I strictly separate my solo projects from it. Of course I was inspired by Queen, but my concerts are only about my influences. The audience is not so broad, but you can not compete with Queen and I do not want that!
Gringoz: As already mentioned, your time at American Idol was over ten years ago. Before that you worked in musicals. Would you do that again if you had the opportunity or did you grow out of it?
Lambert: Sure! I love musicals, but I just don't have time for it. There are so many things I want to do!
Gringoz: We come to the last question. In the past ten years you have achieved what many artists can only dream of. Where do you see yourself in ten years? Is there anything else you want to achieve?
Lambert: I'm so lucky to be able to do what I do. I hope it stays that way for a while! I have no set goals, I just want to continue making music and performing in front of an audience that likes to listen to this music. I just started the Feel Something Foundation , so that's something I'm focusing on now. I really want to change something in the lives of LGBTQ + people and the Foundation should do just that. I guess that's my goal!
Gringoz: It's a nice goal. Thank you for the interview!
With its diverse funk-rock album Velvet (2020) is Adam Lambert on tour in September in Germany. Already in June you can see him performing with Queen in the big arenas.

toramenor , thank you for your very well articulated and honest post. I don't see it as a rant at all as I value it as important feedback from a fan like me. I have absolutely no issue with the 5 years between albums, considering that Adam delivered during that time at the highest level for the other side by side project, and clearly he was going through stuff. I am really glad that Adam took his time to not rush the process and work on the masterpiece that we got with "Velvet". I believe it is timeless and that it will get into many ears and hearts in the future. He should be more than proud of it. Wow... 2 million views on the music video is awesome!!!! I must admit that my own viewing frequency has slowed down a bit since it hit 1 million, so more and more people are probably still finding out about it.
