Q3 granted me temporary powers to bring the music recommendations over from Atop1. From Q3Artist: Radiohead Why I recommend Radiohead: This band proves that music is not static and that you can be left of center and still be commercially successful. At the peak of the grunge movement, Radiohead redefined alt rock music finely-crafted music composition rarely seen in pop or rock music. Then in 2000 they evolved again and nearly all traditional rock instrumentation for an emphasis on electronica and pop music. They are living proof that pop music can be complex and authentic. Many critics and music fans consider Radiohead to be one of the greatest bands of all time. But the most significant contribution to music may have happened in 2007 when they finished their major-label contract and decide to release "In Rainbows" (2007) with a "the price is up to you" online payment model. The experiment had mixed results (some pans paid retail price others paid nothing) but the band has continued to provide fans will a constant supply of free HQ digital music and live performances. "In Rainbows" was also released as an independent record at retail and sold over 3 million copies worldwide. Genres: Alternative rock, electronic music, experimental rock Radiohead are an English rock band from Abingdon, Oxfordshire, formed in 1985. The band consists of Thom Yorke (vocals, guitar, piano, beats), Jonny Greenwood (guitars, keyboards, other instruments), Ed O'Brien (guitars, backing vocals), Colin Greenwood (bass, synthesizers) and Phil Selway (drums, percussion). The band has received eight BRIT Award nominations, but have yet to win one. Radiohead has received the Best Alternative Music Performance award three times at the Grammy Awards, for OK Computer in 1998, Kid A in 2001, and "In Rainbows" in 2009. At the MTV Video Music Awards, the band received the award for Best Art Direction for "There There" in 2003. Radiohead has also received the Best Act In The World Today award three times at the Q Awards, in 2001, 2002, and 2003. Overall, Radiohead has received 13 awards from 38 nominations. Rolling Stone surveyed 100 critics to ID the #1 album of the last decade and they select Radiohead "Kid A". Musical influences: Among Radiohead members' earliest influences were Scott Walker, and Elvis Costello; post-punk acts such as Joy Division, Magazine, R.E.M., Pixies, The Smiths and Sonic Youth. By the mid-1990s, Radiohead began to mention an interest in electronic music, especially that of DJ Shadow and also cited composer Krzysztof Penderecki as an influence on parts of OK Computer. Other influences are Miles Davis and Ennio Morricone, 1960s rock groups, such as The Beatles and The Beach Boys.

Radiohead - Live From The Basement [Full Show] Download a Free Radiohead Concert DVDLast year at their Prague show, 50 fans were given Flip cameras to film the concert from a variety of angles, and the footage was then pieced together to create the concert film, simply entitled Radiohead – Live in Praha. Always a fan-first band, Radiohead provided professional audio from the show for the DVD, so while the video capturing is amateur, the sound is not, which makes for a personal and professional account of the concert. radiohead-prague.nataly.fr/Download.html

From sugareeI remember when they offered the "price is up to you". I wonder if they made money. Were/are they with a major label or are they putting out their music themselves? Not my cuppa, but love the information. This is Brett Dennen. Kind of folksy. I'm a big fan of lyrics, so that's how this guy hooked me. Great songwriter IMO. And I like his slightly unusual distinctive voice. That's what's missing for me with a lot of today's artist. I like to hear a few words of a song and immediately recognize the artist. Some info below. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brett_DennenMy favorites Ain't Gonna Lose You and Make You Crazy

From sugareeHere's a reality talent show guy. Eli Mattson. He came in second on the 3rd season of America's Got Talent. Should have won! He's got a little Elton John vibe. Another distinctive voice IMO. He's toured a little, but isn't signed. His official site. www.elimattson.com/Walking in Memphis on AGT (I love watching this. Gets me teary eyed.) A self penned song from his compilation cd, available on CDBaby. #7

From sugareeOne more from a reality talent show. They won Next Great American Band in 2007. They re-named themselves Sons of Sylvia and are currently on tour with Carrie Underwood. Their album doesn't really fit a genre IMO. They're being pitched to country radio. Hope the tour brings them the recognition they deserve. Their official website. www.sonsofsylvia.com/news/They're pretty amazing musicians. Here's my favorite from NGAB - You're In My Heart And this from the show too. Gimme Shelter. One of my favorites from their cd. Revelation

From iridiumOkay, here goes with some suggestions. First, my BF recently introduced me to a group called Pink Martini. We saw them at the Hollywood Bowl in September and they were great. A little intro from their wiki page: Pink Martini is a 12-member "little orchestra"[1] from Portland, Oregon, formed in 1994 by pianist Thomas M. Lauderdale. They draw inspiration from music from all over the world – crossing genres of classical, jazz and old-fashioned pop. Band leader, Thomas Lauderdale describes the band's sound as "music of the world without being world music. If the United Nations had a house band in 1962 hopefully Pink Martini would be that band." "My hope is that we’re creating exquisite musical wallpaper which can be turned up or down, and played on almost any occasion, from background music to a love affair to vacuuming around the house."en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pink_MartiniTheir music has a very international flavor -- at the Hollywood Bowl they performed songs, most of which were original compositions, in English, Spanish, French and even Japanese. But the music is not "heavy" -- they definitely have a great sense of style and fun, too. A taste:

From iridiumOkay, here's another: Janelle Monae. Both Adam and Jim Cantiello (among many others) have sung Ms. Monae's praises. Her 2010 album "The ArchAndroid" got great reviews. Her "sound" is an eclectic mix of hip-hop, pop, funk and dance. Here is a link to her wiki page: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Janelle_Mon%C3%A1eHere's some Janelle:

From iridiumI'm now realizing that I'm not sure whether the purpose of this thread is to recommend newer artists, or more obscure artists, or maybe remind us of great ones. Hopefully I'm not messing up with my next recommendation: Annie Lennox. Yes, she's been around for about 30 years now, but she's one of my personal favorites. I love her voice and her style. I think she has one of the most distinctive and beautiful voices in pop/rock. As part of the Eurythmics and through her solo career androgyny and theatricality have become hallmarks of her performance style (hmm, sound familiar? . Her official website: www.annielennox.com/Her wiki page: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Annie_LennoxMs. Lennox has also made some amazing videos -- very theatrical, of course! Somewhere inside her may be a frustrated actress. Here are some beauties: Walking on Broken Glass: inspired by the play/movie "Dangerous Liaisons", look for John Malkovich and Hugh Laurie in the video Cold: Beautiful song, very dramatic (for some reason, I'd like to hear Adam sing this) Love Song for a Vampire: 'Cause it's the day after Halloween and Adam loves vampires . The movie clips are from "Dracula" with Gary Oldman (1992) directed by Francis Ford Coppola. Other personal favorites are "Hear Comes the Rain Again" and "No More I Love You's". You can find them on you-tube -- I didn't want to clog up the page with more videos.

From iridiumLast one for now: Keane I have to admit, I don't know much about these guys. Adam twittered about them and a couple of friends recommended their music. So I checked out their recent EP "Night Train" and I liked it. (Will update this with more info when I get a chance. Keane is a British band which formed in 1997. Their music is described as alternate rock and "synth rock". Here is their wiki page: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keane_(band) Their official website: www.keanemusic.com/index.phpHere are some selections:

From WillowgardenI hosted pop music on AOL when they had hosted music message boards but my first love was always the "golden age" of rock & roll and the teen idols, namely the Everly Brothers. I swear Don Everly was my first teen crush. Now it's Adam in my more "mature" years. Don and Phil Everly were in the first group of artists inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame (along with Elvis, Sam Cook, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Ray Charles, Fats Domino, Buddy Holly, and James Brown). They were an inspiration to many artists who followed. Some of these artists were: Beatles, Birds, Hollies, Buffalo Springfield, CSNY, etc. They started out in Country but bridged the gap into pop & rock. A little know fact....Don's daughter Erin was briefly married to Axl Rose and is the inspiration for Sweet Child of Mine. Here is their Wiki page: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Everly_Brothersand from YouTube, two examples of their live work. Pretty good live singsrs.

There are quite a few artists that I would love to recommend - each who has very different moods. Lots of guys so I'll add a few girls to the mix.
I'll start with:
Missy Higgins.
Missy was discovered by an Australian Radio station competition when she was still in high school. Here first album went on to become one of the biggest selling debut albums ever. She writes her own songs and plays piano and guitar - her whole family is quite musical and her father often makes guest appearances at her concerts. She is very environmentally conscious and her last tour was run with zero emissions via carbon offsets.
But more than anything her music has an authenticity and connection that is both unusual and impressive in someone so young (she is only in her mid 20s now and is considered somewhat an old hand her in oz). Her voice is untrained and as a result has a distinctive quality that is uniquely Missy.
Here are a couple of very different shades of Missy:
Forgive Me a beautiful moving acoustic number

From jamieWillie Nelson. Everyone knows Willie, but I wanted recommend him because I feel almost the same way about both Adam and Willie. I love his talent but the whole package of his music and his charm captured my heart many years ago and he's kept it. . His voice is not technically anything special but it affects me to the core as does his guitar playing. His writing is prolific and beautiful, he ditched Nashville early on and went to Austin and started courting the hippies, he's a rebel and fights for the underdog(looking at his wiki page under activism is inspiring), he smoked a joint on the roof of the white House, and his smile melts my heart. www.blender.com/guide/66829/33-things-you-should-know-about-willie-nelson.htmlHe throws out a TON of albums, many lately just throw aways. But this one he did about 10 years ago "Teatro" is something special and something non-country fans might enjoy too. Talk about a long instrumental start =) Be patient the lyrics are worth it. Tom Waits, He's my other guy. I love him in a different way from Adam and Willie. My first boyfriend introduced me to him when I was 17. The boyfriend didn't last but my love affair with all things Tom did. I don't know how to sum him up as he's all over the place musically. But one thing never changes, his writing is pure poetry, every song is absurd and sad and beautiful all at once. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_WaitsThe 58-year-old Mr. Waits ... has composed a body of work that's at least comparable to any songwriter's in pop today. A keen, sensitive and sympathetic chronicler of the adrift and downtrodden, Mr. Waits creates three-dimensional characters who, even in their confusion and despair, are capable of insight and startling points of view. Their stories are accompanied by music that's unlike any other in pop historyI was lucky enough to see him play once, he rarely tours, and he didn't play one song I knew yet it was the best concert experience I ever had. It was pure theater and he had the place laughing and crying and in awe. Here' a sweet sad one from the 70's And he's funny! I guess thats how I like my guys, talented, smart and funny.

From Lefty
Gosh, Willie AND Waits?
You rock, Jamie! I had the privilege of hearing Willie live 20+ years ago as a surprise guest of Garrison Keillor, and though I didn't know anything about country or Willie back then, the timbre and beauty of his voice filled that hall and brought me to tears.
Earlier I went on (too long) about some other tenor singers, like Tim Buckley and even Johnny Crawford, who affect me like this, but hadn't mentioned Willie. I should have. Did you know his daughter and Arlo's have a hilarious band, Folk Uke? Here's their Shit Makes the Flowers Grow:
And here's one with their dads backing them up:
Tom Waits is a whole other animal -- talk about the ultimate independent artist, one of the best. Saw him hanging around Hwd a lot c. 1978-81 he'd be nursing a single cup of coffee all night @ Argo's on Fairfax, where we'd go after shows. His Real Gone album was insanely great, I think. What a body of work over the years! He's a big inspiration for the young singer-songwriter I work with.

Before I head onto the other girls was thinking about male artists that people may not be familiar with who have that special something.
Liam O'Maonlai
Liam was the lead singer of Irish band Hothouse Flowers who were quite popular in Australia and had a bit of a cult following in US. I first saw them in Australia in the early 90's and was struck by their great live shows and especially the presence and great voice of the lead singer Liam. He actually gave me one of my first hair on back of neck standing up experiences at a live show where he sang an gaelic hymn acapella - I can still remember the absolute silence of the crowd with his gorgeous voice soaring. Very much a "soaked" moment.
Since the demise of the Hothouse Flowers he has become an increasingly prolific ambassador for Irish music and his album Rian has some gorgeous hymn that are almost gregorian chant like. He's a classically trained musician and plays a huge range of instruments as well as having a pretty distinctive and memorable voice.
A recent song:
