Here are some of what I enjoy :
STEEL HEART : a rock metal band. Some call them Glam metal. The lead singer is Matijevic , I think he is from Croatia.

Sara Bareilles from Eureka , California. A fairly new artist, started in 2007 but has sold over 3 million worldwide. iTunes offered her song , Love Song , as a free download and that's how it all started for her. Its not really a great song, but it led iTunes subscribers to her album. I used to wonder why Adam could not start selling his music this way.

Just got home from Indigo Girls in concert (at the same venue Adam played here in Melbourne) and the version of Romeo and Juliet that Amy sang just blew my socks off. That girls has some serious pipes but the she takes Dire Straits slightly sleepy song and turns it into a tour de force full of angst - found this version on youtube that doesn't really do the live performance justice but will give you an idea...
And they didn't do this song but mentioned it when someone in audience yelled out request - is Pink Dear Mr President that features Indigo Girls. Didn't know that so looked up youtube and found this interview one with a acoustic unrehearsed sitting around on a couch performance and Pink's vocal will blow you away. Girl can SANG. (performance starts about 1.55)

Haven't been here in ages. Since this is Memorial Day, I felt the need to post this song. Think what you will of Billy Ray Cyrus, but this song is what Remembrance Day is all about..............
Some Gave All
One more, because this day is so important.

Thanks for posting these vids from The Rasmus!! I have to post another one since I love the song AND the vid so much!!! gelly, you're welcome. And thank you! It's so cool that you like the Rasmus too. : How on earth did I forget to embed this vid. I love The Rasmus - Livin' in a world without you too, and that vid is just great. One more. The song is good, vid isn't. So it's better just listen. This somehow reminds me of early Rasmus' times. I really don't know why. ;D Maybe it's Lauri's hair style. ;D The first time I saw/heard them playing, boys were about 16, and full of energy. And their music then was, well totally different. p.s. gelly this link is especially for you, Lauri tries to say something in Greek (2:43 -->) I have no idea what Hope it's something nice. :-[ And sorry, if it isn't

These guys are really good. These songs are also great for workouts. Can't watch Living in a World without you. Youtube says it's not available for this country. So strange that in a global world that labels would limit viewing by country.

I think this is another one of those times when I'm talking to myself but can't sleep and off to airport soon so... FWIW
The Slightly Odd Case of Maroon 5
This is not really my flavor of music, but I've always been interested as Maroon 5 was one of those acts that took the industry and radio by surprise - an outlier. A male pop rock act that did not fall into the John Mayer-type WGWG but also was not particularly hip hop influenced. And while playing often to rock audiences, they def fall on the pop side of rock - as opposed to the Killers, Green Day, MCR, etc.
Their sound was/is distinctive - both because of Levine's voice, which critics often find either charming or irritating, some find it both at same time, and the r&b flavor. (The core of the band has been together since high school, but entering their twenties, Levine and others fell hard for R&B/Soul/Stevie Wonder and wanted to do more of a fusion along the lines of what had happened with pop/hip hop.) Also, many have praised Levine's well-crafted, more adult-themed lyrics and his ear for more interesting, edgier hooks than average pop act.
Bottom line is they did not fall into an easy category when they appeared and had to deliberately blaze a path around that obstacle.
With the release of their debut album "Songs About Jane" in mid 2002, M5 and their label (another story in itself) decided to focus on building a fanbase through hardcore touring - I think the band toured for almost 3 yrs w/first album (did a lot of dives but also opened for a lot of major bands/singers). During that time it took the better part of two years for the album to hit but when it did finally hit - it was huge.
(I went to Wiki for details: "The album peaked at #6 on the Billboard 200 in September 2004, 26 months after its release; this was the longest period between an album's release and its initial Top 10 appearance since SoundScan results were included in the Billboard 200 in 1991.")
The first single 'Harder to Breathe' (more rock edge) was released mid 2002 and crawled up the charts but just wouldn't go away and ulitmately made top 20? - maybe higher. Then 'This Love' was released in Jan 2004 and - riding a building buzz - smashed M5 out of the box. Six months later the vid was released and more attn gathered - huge success for the band. Various awards followed.
(And they did build a hardcore fanbase which is interesting in that while anchored by young women - more twenties/thirties than tweens/teens - they also attract a fair amount of young guys - prob drawn by some combo of the band's proficiency and Adam's guy-guy (frat boy) personality and his amazing tattoos:))
Levine has noted - with humor - that shooting from obscurity, small audiences and tour exhaustion straight to overexposure resulted in M5 bypassing indie cred altogether, making the wannabe hipster band 'uncool' with music nerds but also giving them lots of money and choices about what they do. (Justin Timberlake and Levine are fond of each other - JT has made appearances w/Maroon 5 more than once and duetted on 'this love' w/Adam.) Mostly 'old stuff' in vids:
Sunday Morning
She Will Be Loved
If I Never See Your Face Again w/Rihanna (Live Perf)
Won't Go Home W/out You (on Ellen - she and Portia are big fans):

I attended the Bruno Mars/Janelle Monae Hooligans in Wondaland tour last night and feel inspired to share some observations. I've kinda liked Bruno's songs on the radio ever since Adam tweeted about him. Then when I was in Hawaii last year to see Adam, they were playing a lot of Bruno (his hometown so makes sense). My friend (who I brought to Adam's concert) bought me the Bruno album and I have really enjoyed it. I recommend the album: my favorite tracks are: Just The Way You Are, Our First Time, The Lazy Song, Marry You, Count On Me but I like the whole album (just like Adam's, Pink's, Adele's albums for me). I was pretty butt-hurt when Bruno beat Adam for the Grammy and also jealous of Bruno's success and selling more albums than Adam but I've decided to let that go because I think that Bruno's success can be really good for Adam which I'll explain later. And after seeing him perform live, I cannot deny he deserves his success. Concert was at San Francisco Bill Graham's Civic Center Auditorium-holds about 7k+ and it was all GA. Tickets were still available on ticketmaster a few weeks ago but it may have sold out by yesterday - not sure - it looked pretty full. About 4-5k people on the floor, all standing squished together and another 2-3k in balcony seating. My friend, my daughter and I got there about an hour before show and long lines already, but we were lucky to get balcony seats on the very side so side-view but close and more comfortable -woo hoo! Audience observations: seemed about even male-female ratio, mostly 20-40 but some younger and older and a few families too. Lots of young men were wearing the type of hat Bruno often wears. This year I've seen Janet Jackson, Ke$sha, Scissor Sisters live and all 3 of those performers had a strong gay male presence in the audience - didn't really notice them for Bruno which I found interesting. Didn't notice it when I saw Prince recently either. Does this support some people's theory that many gay males prefer female singers? I'm generalizing here obviously - just wondering............. First opener: Mayer Hawthorn - from Detroit. Young band for such an old soul/Motown sound - wow they're cool I like them! Googled him - young guy with impressive music credentials - might have to find his music online..... Janelle Monae: I was so excited to see her and then so disappointed. She looked really good - same outfit I've seen her in on TV every time: black pants, white shirt, skinny black tie. Huge band - 4 strings, 3 horns and more and a few back-up singers. Her fancy footwork dancing that I've seen before was cool but got repetitive. Her voice (I think it was good) was drowned out by the band and all the songs sounded pretty much alike, except her cover of Smile - which she had less musicians on so you could hear her voice but she tried to do too much with the song - lots of high voice/low voice/riffing but the changes in her key were too abrupt or something - I dunno - not an expert. She was very quirky - was painted a picture of (I think) a woman's behind while singing at one point then she laid down on the stage and sang for a while (of course no one on the floor could see her). Sadly my friend sitting right next to me texted "Make Her Stop" and showed it to me. While they cleared Janelle and set-up Bruno, they played a very cool mix of old and new music - Jimi Hendrix, Elvis Presley, some unknown rap, even Franki Valli at one point - me likey the variety. Bruno: Wow - he started off strong and kept the momentum going - a big surprise! After the drowning out of Janelle, I was worried but Bruno's music was just right - his voice really stood out and he had great stage presence (even though he seems to be a pretty short man). He was funny, natural, comfortable with the audience and seemed truly happy and humble. He also had a larger band - several horns plus a standard 4 piece band and just one back-up singer who also did some rap sections on some songs (like Billionaire and Nuttin on You which aren't actually songs from his album but collabs). No wonder we saw about 8-10 buses outside - with so many band members between these guys! Why I like him and think his success is good for Adam: Like Adam, he is a male singer fusing old with new sound successfully. His songs sound current but have a LOT of very retro vibe. He is also rather hard to pinpoint genre-wise: pop, rap, R&B, Hawaiian, Reggae, rock, doo-wop, acapella, it was all sampled last night. I really like the fact that Adam can sing a variety of styles and would like him to continue that - with Bruno's success (and seemingly with a younger crowd) doing a similar type of thing, I hope that can keep the door open for Adam to continue mixing it up, and giving us a variety of styles of music. Bruno's success also means to me that audiences want to hear a performer who can actually sing live. And Bruno did - quite effortlessly and beautifully. He also played a very impressive guitar and ukelele and did some rather fancy dancing - similar to what Janelle Monae does but not quite as energetic with his feet. He performed every song from his album (maybe only missed 1 or 2) plus the 2 collabs I mentioned above and even added a little barbershop quartet acapella song which the audience loved too. He was on stage about an hour and a half. He seems to sweat more than Adam and had a rag handy (which surprised me since he must be used to humidity coming from Hawaii). His banter seemed comfortable, maybe only slightly more than Adam does and he also did a little audience participation on his last song like Adam. Maybe this is common but I haven't seen it a lot - or maybe Bruno has been watching Glamnation DVD's . Bruno was really fun, loved his voice, the songs were all great live, I danced and sang along. I will see him again his next tour - and I hope both he and Adam continue to have great success but next time Adam gets to win the Grammy please.
