From AlisonYes, that Costello song certainly sounds like it came straight from Tin Pan Alley. This is the Leon Redbone song I'm most familiar with . www.youtube.com/watch?v=0IUSSrldd0U&feature=youtube_gdata_playerOT: Listening to this depression era music makes me wish the new season of Boardwalk Empire would come out soon, but I am sure it won't air for months. HBO is the only premium channel we kept because we are addicted to Boardwalk Empire and True Blood.

From jamieAlong the Tin Pan Alley theme... It's the Talk of the Town, Boulevard of Broken Dreams and Other Sad Songs. I had the same experience as this reviewer. Anytime I played this album people HAD to know what it was and ended up buying it. I can't find full versions of the songs to give you and the snippets don't really do it justice, but I would recommend buying a used cd from Amazon. 20 years later it still takes me to another place. The female vocalists had that Patsy Cline dreamy otherworldly quality. www.amazon.com/Talk-Town-Boulevard-Broken-Dreams/dp/B000008DPB

From angelkrash24O.K, I've wanted to post in this thread for a while but I was debating what artist to recommend.Since I posted about Franz Ferdinand last night I figured I'll give more details about the band for those that are interested.I love this band because of their fresh sound, complicated melodies and sexy lyrics. And I love their artistic videos. Franz Ferdinand - A rock band formed in Glasgow, Scotland, in 2002.The band is composed of Alex Kapranos (lead vocals and guitar), Bob Hardy (bass guitar), Nick McCarthy (rhythm guitar, keyboards and backing vocals) and Paul Thomson (drums, percussion, guitar and backing vocals). Discography (this is how I sum up the albums): 1.Franz Ferdinand (2004)-Very funky, punky rock sound. Complicated melodies. 2.You Could Have It So Much Better (2005)-They returned more to their roots.Kinda Britpop meets the Kinks. 3.Tonight: Franz Ferdinand (2009)-A concept album loosely based around a night of partying and the morning effects after.A bit more similar to the first album but darker. The band has been nominated for several Grammy Awards, becoming one of few Scottish bands or artists to be nominated for a Grammy Award. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Franz_Ferdinand_(band)Favorite songs: From the first album:Take me Out, The Dark of the Matinée and Michael. Also: www.youtube.com/watch?v=92GEqgbXE_IFrom the second album:I'm Your Villian, Do You Want To.Also: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z1qPnSZDrAQFrom the third album:Turn It On,Ulysses and Katherine Kiss Me.Also: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dl98kUWgQrcO.K, i cheated and posted 3 YTs.I just can't help it

From MikaAngel - I've always loved FF but also always felt they have yet to live up to their potential. (What do they put in the water in Scotland? That country produces the most interesting bands!) Take Me Out is one of the great near misses in my (this time humble opinion). Gorgeous opening, delicious dirty riff and then it ultimately goes nowhere - neither the lyrics nor the melody offer the pay-off you expect from the brilliant first half. Love it so much but irks me so much intellectually that they couldn't see that and spend some more time on it. I really think it would have been a Classic. Whereas I think they got it completely right on 'Dark of the Matinee' - completely different kind of song, not arguing TMO is anything like it, but it is pretty much perfect in structure and hook placement - the lyrics paint a wonderful pic and a feeling I think many can relate to. (Like the vid too.) Love them - just think they could take it to yet another level with more focus or maybe the right producer. ETA: I just watched this vid four times - forgot how much I love the song and the video so simple/brilliant. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ba-vHKFVsFE

From angelkrash24Mika I couldn't agree with you more about FF's potential and specifically about Take Me Out. I love that song and the first half is so fresh, so sexy-the rif, the lyrics and then it's very repetitive. I wish they would have taken it further both lyricly and melody wise.I still love the song though. I was debating if I should post Matinee or Jacqueline. I agree with you, Matinee as a whole is a stronger song. It has a story to tell. And the video is great, subtle with a wink. BTW have you heard the cover they did to What You Waiting For? BTW they also covered Blondie's Call Me www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qk5MAv_X8HM&feature=relatedI'd love to know more about your favorite Scottish bands, if you feel like sharing. I like the 1990s: www.youtube.com/watch?v=-lFjS2yEpxUwww.youtube.com/watch?v=Y7KbEm-UKb0&feature=relatedAnd I also love Travis.Their cover of Hit Me Baby One More time was magic: www.youtube.com/watch?v=UiArBJ_RzzsBTW I also have a soft spot for British music.

From rabbitrabbitJust adding on to Scottish pop/rock bands. I saw Del Amitri in concert when I was running around Glasgow as an exchange student and falling in love in the early 90's. I love their mix of poppy fun sing-along music with incredibly depressing but spot on lyrics. This is my favorite song by them, unfortunately I couldn't find a version with the studio recording of the song - this is acoustic live, but has the (IMO brilliant) lyrics written out Nothing Ever Happens www.youtube.com/watch?v=RnW8dmJ0Fl4some samples of their "love" songs.... Kiss this thing goodbye www.youtube.com/watch?v=LUWAE76PmMYRoll to me www.youtube.com/watch?v=suzwkw0dYmM

From jamieThanks Willow, I had never heard of him before. Really interesting story too. As much as I'm loving these Scottish bands, and the fact that a man with a scottish accent makes me weak in the knees, I have to throw in a little Irish or my dad will disown me. Here's a song I love by the Pogues. I gave my dad who knows the words to 100 Irish folk songs this Album for christmas back in the 80s and he still plays it every christmas. Still sad I never saw them live. www.youtube.com/watch?v=wjEIP6otc4YAnd here's part 1 of a documentary about the making of the song. www.youtube.com/watch?v=SW_WSQpewNY&feature=relatedrabitrabit, You and I were running around europe as exchange students at around the same time. Alas, I didn't fall in love but I did meet and kiss Joe Strummer in Rome after a concert about a year after this video was shot. I just came across it while looking up the pogues. It's an embarrassing but funny story that my friend who was there will never let me live down. He was a sweetheart and very funny though, RIP. www.youtube.com/watch?v=IL9hDmoxkiA&feature=relatedI'm also embarrassed to admit Angel, that I came across your recommendation of the Travis cover from watching Lindsay Lohan's Freaky Friday. Great cover. I also watched that truly awful movie PS I Love You in part because of the music. In addition to being a fan of covers I also used to always go to the soundtrack section of music stores when they still existed. It was a great way to discover new music and some of my favorite albums have been soundtracks. Mika, For some reason I'm thinking you might have section for soundtracks in your library? Would love to hear if anyone has some favorite soundtracks.

From MikaJ We're having a synchronicity day (Jung not the Police). I had actually drafted a post with a soundtrack clip but decided instrumental and non pop was too far afield. I had only deleted it a couple hrs before your post. Being a movie person, I do love soundtracks. This one isn't big like the Mission or typical exactly. Here's the thing. My favorite director right now is Rian Johnson. Maybe not everyone's cup of tea - but he wrote and directed both his two films (i believe). Brick is fantastic if you haven't seen it. The Brothers Bloom got mixed reception but the critics who didn't like it either objected to the stylistic approach or (pfft) thought it was about the con - it was never about the con. anyway, I kept wondering how as an indie guy he could afford the gorgeous soundtrack - it's his cousin Nathan Johnson. Quirky definitely - can see it would irritate easily. Other parts of soundtrack are jazzier. My heart still goes out to Mark Ruffalo - I know I'm getting random. (Pace picks up after intro (:45) and turns so sweet. This is a short piece but other parts are on YT) Penelope's Theme - Nathan Johnson (INSTRUMENTAL ONLY) www.youtube.com/watch?v=05eArjS92oM
