Alex Newell Recruits Adam Lambert, Shangela & More for Mother's Day Anthem 'Mama Told Me'
5/6/2020 by Stephen Daw
Especially with the world in its current state of disarray, Mother's Day (May 10) is an important time for everyone to show their moms the love and appreciation they deserve — and Alex Newell has the perfect video to do just that.
On Wednesday (May 6), Newell unveiled his new video for "Mama Told Me," a disco-tinged anthem where he sings directly to his mom, thanking her for everything she's done throughout his life. "Mama told me/ Baby lift your head," he sings. "Yes, she told me/ No point in regret/ 'Cause what's coming for you/ Is gonna be better yet."
The video for the song serves as a thank you to more than just Newell's mom, though — throughout the new clip, a number of photos appear showing various stars with their moms, including Adam Lambert, Shangela, Laverne Cox, Danielle Brooks, MJ Rodriguez and Newell's former Glee castmates Jenna Ushkowitz and Amber Riley.
In a statement released with the track, Newell said that he not only wanted to celebrate his mom who raised him on her own following his father's death, but to also pay tribute to all moms of any kind. "I paid homage to what she did for me and what motherhood is – instilling positivity into a child no matter what age, sharing wisdom, nurturing them, comforting them," he said. "I also wanted to write an anthem for the house moms we have in the LGBTQ community, adoptive moms, and anyone who is a maternal figure and nurturer.”

He said: 'I'm just keeping busy, speaking with a therapist as the anxiety can get real, and speaking to friends and family.
'I have some house guests who were here before the lockdown so it's a lovely family vibe, we make meals together and make each other laugh, it's very healing.
'We're all focused on the virus at first, but there's a lot of fall-out from this - from mental health to jobs.
'Imagine going through this 50 years ago? We have the tools at our fingertips to help us get through this.'
