I tweeted the radio station earlier today saying that if they expect Adam fans to come and vote on their polls then they need to play his songs more. (I saw loads of spins for Katy Perry, Dua Lipa, Justin Bieber etc. but not Adam). They tweeted back saying they would and within the last 30 minutes they spun Velvet and Superpower - both songs that deserve to be in the Top 10 Billboard charts. Anyway, it may help if more fans tweet the station and then let them know that we'd like to hear more of Adam's songs from Velvet - if we're going to be voting. Also wanted to say, I'm very grateful for all the work that goes into keeping this site going and, more important, it being a clearing house for Adam information. I joined back when the board was Planet Fierce and though many of us don't post regularly (I'm west coast and by the time I get on here the discussion is done for the day), I still come to catch up on information, for concert and appearance reviews by members and meet - up information.

It is anything Monday and we were treated to an LGPTQ+ roundtable that reminded me of some of the discussions that used to be held on this forum...back in the "good old days"... I thought a trip down memory lane may be interesting for both we 'oldies' and those who came on to this board after around mid 2014ish. In the roundtable, Adam referred to the "tone it down" messages he would receive as Poison in the blood....and it was my discussions of this notion [using the Emotional/Aesthetic/Presentational Labour terms] of why Adam went through a stage beneficently referred to here as 'maturing' and going more 'natural' and 'authentic'. My argument was that removing make-up, removing nail polish [yes...for close to 6 mos. Adam stopped wearing NAIL POLISH!] and lightening his hair to the red-browns....had to be distressing for Adam and not at all a sign of maturation or authenticity. I was shouted down and that sort of discussion...among other heavy stuff...was not allowed and sent to a thread labelled the Dark Side. The Dark Side has been completely deleted .... dead and gone from view. But out of that site came the slightly lighter but still really interesting discussion thread called the Moon Garden. Many of the people who contributed to that thread are not seen around Adamtopia any more...among them, one I really miss here, a very literate and thoughtful fan by the name of Juniemoon. The Moongarden only really existed for about a year...even sidelined as it was there was still a level of censorship and eventually, Junie set up a separate private fb group...which also disbanded after a year or so. Not wanting to flog any dead horses or any such thing. Many...even most...of the really early posters have left Atop and some, perhaps, the fandom. Many primarily reside on twitter now and/or pop in here when something really momentous happens. This is a natural evolution of any group so it is not surprising that the tenor of the place has changed dramatically. Atop has been maintained as a place of glitter and rarely is anything 'serious' really tolerated. I do thank you, Q3, for being ok with some outside of the glitter stuff on the forum on Mondays. Much of this is because of Adam's new-found political activism. If any of you wish to see what some of the Moongarden discussions were like, I invite you to go back and take a trip down memory lane...or the past . It is very interesting! You may also want to take a look at After Hours. That is a much shorter forum, lasting over a longer time...and for those of a strong poetic and literary bent. I can't talk to so much of that as I was not a part of most of those discussions...that I remember. They are very interesting though. I personally would love to see a slight rejuvenation of the Moon Garden...if there are people interesting in delving below the surface in a meaningful way. I truly miss those days....there was an intellectual stimulation in the talk that made me head directly here every morning. It was a 'start at the first page' kind of thread...the main thread is a 'start at the latest page' kind of thread. If that makes sense..... Re where to start in the MoonGarden should there be any interest...anywhere you wish.. Thanks for providing a bit of an Atop history lesson to this site. I joined about 6 years ago but never actually visited any threads outside of this main thread, except for the members/events page, which has always appeared to be sparsely visited, and the thread on Burning Man. Not sure if I simply missed the "Dark Side" or if it happened before I joined. About the "tone it down" messages that Adam was referring to in the roundtable, followed by a discussion here on "maturity"... I honestly don't know what exactly should be the definition of such a term for a music artist like Adam, both in the visual and musical sense. It is probably a tricky term to use that can easily lead to misinterpretations, especially if we also look at the "business side of things". A most mature Adam free to express himself in all aspects of his artistry without the need to appease for "numbers" may indeed be shown in "Velvet", but that does not mean that I have to love everything about it. Just as much as I did not love the excessive eyeliner and glitter during Adam's beginnings while still becoming a fan, I do not particularly care for all the glittery stuff now either. I still love him and "Velvet" and he should do whatever he wants. But I did prefer the for my taste more edgy Adam that we saw during TOH era.

From the Billboard Pride article that Pi Posted- thought I'd post this since Adam's comment is sort of becoming a classic
Many of the special guests on the roundtable shared their own personal experiences with homophobia in the industry. At one point, pop singer Parson James even revealed that he encountered homophobia from queer executives in the industry.
“These two gay men that were running this company literally told me, ‘Maybe you should tone it down and not be too honest,'" he said. "It was super discouraging for that to be my first instance of ‘okay, will this is what it’s going to be like, even the gays running this company aren’t on my side.'”
Lambert understood exactly what James was describing, having experienced it himself many times. “The ‘tone it down’ comment is etched in poison in my mind. I’ve heard it for years and it’s the worst thing."

peace&love This is an interesting discussion and may be I am missing a key ingredient here, so please enlighten me if I do. Why do you think gay artists are advised to "tone it down", even by their own peers? From my perspective, artists are pretty much free to do whatever, however for most who like to be commercially successful or even get a label deal it comes down to compromise. It is all about general appeal, and unfortunately many gay artists have to choose if they are willing to make adjustments. I think we have come a long way already, but it is a process.
