Regardless of what song Adam might do at the Olympics, he would impress people with his voice. And those people would probably go out and buy his music. There might be a few who would be disappointed because the music wasn't what they were expecting, but overall I think there would be a net gain of new fans. A worldwide platform would be a major win for Adam, IMO. EXXXACTLY. Adam's album will have been out for likely four months; he will have been doing promo. If any one of the billions who see a performance says, "Who's that?" Which we KNOW happened with the EMAs, they can do a quick Google search or anything and "Trespassing" will be everywhere at that point. Sorry, Q3, you cannot convince me there is a downside to this. And I strenuously disagree with the nationalism will be so absolute that they cannot abide A SINGLE PERFORMER from a different country. Nationalism is the intention, but it is not absolute. The British press is well aware of the issues Queen has had finding a suitable lead singer for 20 YEARS. Everyone who has ever heard of Queen and Freddie Mercury know damned good and well that they have searched for two decades for a singer that can do their songs justice. I'm sure the very first question asked when negotiations were open for Queen to perform is, "Who is going to sing lead?" I would bank that Paul and Brian immediately discussed it and would never commit if they didn't have some plan in place. Are they going to just hang out for four months, the say, "Well, we've only found one kickass performer in the past 20 years and he's currently at his prime and promoting the hell out of his new music, ya think he might want to lend us a vocal cord so he can generate even MORE buzz for his own stuff?" Nah, let's go ahead and hang out and maybe someone will turn up in the next couple of weeks ... let's go over hill and over dell to each British burg and audition every chorus boy in hopes that we finds another voice in one hundred million ... in the next couple of weeks. We've got time ... They need/want iconic British acts. But they are also under tremendous pressure to have a KILLER show. Beijing was insane. AND not all performers were Chinese (Sarah Brightman ...) ITA with ALL of this. *clutches Susie to mah bosom* I know right now it seems a little pie in the sky to think Adam will perform with Queen there, but on the other hand it's something that is very possible. Brian and Roger obvs adore him, he works well with them and his voice is one of the only ones out there suitable to sing their music, and they have experience performing together and it went over swimmingly. So Queen is performing and needs a singer. It may not happen but it's not so big of a leap to think that it could. And yes I'm sure London Olympic peeps want an all star English cast, but sometimes that just doesn't work out. Like Susie said, other performers have performed at Olympics that weren't of their own native country. It happens. I am racking my brain to think of an english singer who can do these songs justice. I dunno, and maybe in the end Queen will just go with an english singer who can sing them in a passable way...idk. But I def think it's AT LEAST a possibility, and the sheer press and visibility he would get from it would be unmatched. Take the OMG WOW factor from the EMA's and multiply it by a gajillion. And even if in the middle of a tour, it's known way in advance so it can be planned around, and imo Adam would be an idiot to turn down such an offer if one should present itself. YMMV.

www.sundancechannel.com/sunfiltered/2011/11/glambert/Joe Zee gives Adam Lambert a style upgrade November 28, 2011 Joe Zee is back and on this season of ALL ON THE LINE WITH JOE ZEE he’s not only helping struggling designers. He’s also helping celebs looking for a style upgrade. American Idol alum, and bonafide pop superstar, Adam Lambert knew it was time to bring his wardrobe from trashy-tacky to fashion forward. more... I don't know how they got from Adam saying, "campy/theatrical ... maybe even a little tacky on purpose" to trashy-tacky but I think they missed the point. Also, I will be interested to see that jacket designed for him on the big screen because right now I am not a big fan of the black satin under the arm situation. We'll see. THIS^^ (Apart from questioning the jacket, cuz I think I love it ). How these writers tend to pull out of context, sensationalize and/or negatively spin Adam's words is starting to really irritate me. I can see why some established artists, who have the luxury of not needing press, refuse to be interviewed by anyone. Geeeez.

I find it interesting that because there is currently no way to regulate illegal downloads which makes it hard to get "caught" makes it okay to do it. But, what about one's conscience? Just because something is possible doesn't make it right. We can all make up excuses to ease our conscience but in the end, no matter how you want to look at it, we've performed an illegal act.

I think part of the problem with the illegal downloading is this phrase that was used in one of today's posts "free digital downloads." That's the phrase I see most kids I know, using. See, to me, a "free" digital download is one that an artist is promtoting and is freely giving away, like Daughtry did with a few of his songs before the album came out. But taking a download, that is meant, to be sold is not "free." aralid, I like discussion too and you are a brave girl for bringing this up! BTW, if you would like a hard copy of FYE, PM me your address and I will send you one.

I wonder if it would be possible to create a "gifting" thread when Trespassing comes out so everyone could have a bona fide copy? I would love to give others a copy of it but sadly don't personally know many folks who would be receptive. But gifting to Atop members is a no brainer. Not sure about the logistics of course, just an idea. Just to let everyone know, I am more than willing to gift a copy of Tresspassing to ATOPer's who want, but can't afford it. I remember being an undergrad with so little money that I was utterly grateful that there was still one ATM machine left on campus that would dispense 5 dollar bills....because I often didn't have 20 bucks left in my checking account. I did plenty of taping of songs off the radio during that time. Mainly b/c I couldn't afford albums. Hell, I could barely afford food. Groceries were Raman, Raman, Raman, tuna fish, Diet Coke, and whatever was 50% off at Giant that week...tutoring money meant I could spurge and get a roast beef sandwich and fries at Roy Rogers. Thanks above that gasoline was so cheap at the time, otherwise I would have truly gone under. So, yeah, I understand about no spare cash. However I've got the spare cash now ;D , and am willing to help those who don't.

I am an author, of two books. People these days do not want to pay for content. At all. My first book, which came out in 2006, sold quite well and we had three (modest) printings. My second book, which came out in 2010, has sold a fraction of the first printing, for various reasons, but not least because people have stopped buying hard copy books, especially as of January of this year. There must have been a critical mass of Kindles sold as Christmas presents. I have spoken with people who run used book stores who say the bottom has fallen out even of the used book market. One said, "I cannot sell a book at any price." Not even a dollar. My books are $20 retail and $5 for an e-book. I would love for the print books to be cheaper but they can't be. As it is I lose money on single copy sales. The e-books sell decently. I have no doubt they would not sell at all if there were a free alternative. I doubt I will ever do a print book again, and the economics of doing a book at all are dubious. Years of work to earn a few pennies a download ... it's the reality of being a "content provider" today, but so far I don't know how it's going to work. Being a writer is a labor of love anyway, but even love has its limits. Juniemoon, Seeing you refer to yourself as a "content provider" made me think about how doctors hate being called "health care providers." They say things such as, "I went to medical school, not provider school." I guess part of what is happening culturally is the commodification of creative products and of services. That would make me an "information provider" rather than an educator, I guess. What gets lost in this language is recognition that the process behind the service or creative effort makes a difference, and that individual "providers" might bring something unique and worthwhile to their efforts that sets them apart. I mean Adam is more than just an "auditory content provider." LOL peace&love

Oh wanted to chime in abt the illegal dling topic. Arailid--
MY NAME IS CHUNKEY AND I HAVE ILLEGALLY DOWNLOADED BEFORE AND I PROBABLY WILL AGAIN SOMETIME. *sob* YOU ARE NOT ALONE. *sob*
Speaking frankly, I think for people in my age group--30--and for people younger than me, downloading is just normal. It's not RIGHT or ETHICAL but it somehow came to be accepted. I remember I was like 21 or something when someone introduced me to the new awesome thing called NAPSTER and my brother was like Heeey check out Limewire and this and that and this....and to my poor ass it was like manna from heaven. I went on a dl-ing spree and illegally downloaded anything I could simply because I could. EVEN REALLY REALLY BAD SONGS FROM THE 70'S. HORRIBLE SONGS I WILL NEVER EVER MENTION. EVER. But they were free and the concept was new and exciting.
And yeah me and everyone I knew downloaded songs for a long time....and then itunes came out and I started buying songs instead. Nowadays I BUY all of my music on itunes so I can SMILE A SMUG LITTLE ETHICAL SMILE.....but every once in a while I stray to the dark side and download something for free if I can't find the song on itunes.
*SOB*
Don't stone me...please. I have learned the error of my ways!!
Also, did you know that even if you copy your own cd that you bought and give it to someone else that technically is a violation? Someone once told me that also applies to taping music off the radio, so like you technically could be in trouble for making someone a mixed tape. LOL. No idea if that is true but...there ya go.

One final comment on the 2012 Olympics --- here is the London bit from the 2008 closing ceremony -- Leona Lewis and Jimmy Page doing WLL and, yes, Adam would have been betterer: OMG!! I had completely forgotten about this. In retrospect, I think my brain mercifully shut down and erased this strange vision of Leona Lewis in a shimmery gown elevated 20 feet above a morphing bus, singing WLL. This was a srs facepalmy moment.

[snerk] I always closed my eyes and went "neener neener, it doesn't count" when taping songs off the radio. I used the mental excuse that if the DJ was talking over the last measure of the song, it was "damaged" and therefore couldn't be considered a "real" copy. (feel free to eyeroll at my mental gymnastics)

Every, like, seven at seven top song countdown it was time to whip out the tape! Lol somewhere I have a mixed tape with like All 4 One and Lisa Loeb, Cheryl Crow, the Cranberries, Gin Blossoms, Blur.....woah sorry I just traveled back in time to 1994.
