Fantasy Springs: A Vision in the Desert
2/27/11 by NoAngel
One year and well over 100 performances later, there is a concert that remains a touchstone. Say the words “Fantasy Springs” to any Adam fan, and you will get a dreamy and blissful look. I’m not a gambling woman, but I’d venture to say that years from now, FS will be the stuff of legend. Forget that—it already is. Adam’s first solo concert after AI, a crowd filled with devoted fans from around the world, and in some ways a premonition of his vision for GNT.
Fantasy Springs was only a couple months after Gridlock, but what a different vibe! Glam hippie (tm Rad1109), with gemstones and jewels and brilliant blue in his hair and on his eyes. This was Adam reaching back into his Zodiac past, and rocking those feathers into the future.
It’s mindboggling to imagine how Adam pulled this concert together. The preceding weeks had been packed with TV appearances, concerts, award shows and coast-to-coast travel. RMT had been only 2 weeks prior. The fact that Adam “rehearsed” on the drive from L.A. to Indio attests to how little time he’d had to prepare for this event. And an event it was. With fans flying in from around the world, many seeing him live for the first time, and meeting internet friends in 3-D.
Fans had speculated for weeks about what the set-list would be. Turns out it was the eleven songs Adam had sung at Gridlock, plus Mad World and Broken Open. But he foreshadowed the shifts in GNT with plugged-in, to acoustic, to plugged-in sections. From the sexy question of FYE to the heartbreaking vulnerability of Broken Open that brought many to tears, to the campy fun of Fever and the OTT silliness of Down The Rabbit Hole. An eclectic mix of unrelated songs that somehow began to feel like something greater than the sum of its parts.
And then there was Whole Lotta Love. Already an Adam F. Lambert classic, that night he took the song and crafted it into something utterly unique and indisputably magnificent. We were witness to the artist at work. He trusted us (and himself) enough to create in real-time, risking imperfection to bring his art to life before our eyes. Substitute the word “song” for “painting” and this quote by Jackson Pollock resonates:
"When I am in my painting, I'm not aware of what I'm doing… I have no fear of making changes, destroying the image, etc., because the painting has a life of its own. I try to let it come through… [T]here is pure harmony, an easy give and take, and the painting comes out well.”
What can you say about that WLL? Seven-plus minutes of acoustic brilliance—of breath and heat and unearthly notes, both deliciously self-indulgent and deeply generous, playful and intense, bawdy and subtle. Near the end, when he asks, “You want my whole lotta love?” he gets a frenzied “yes” from his breathless audience, and it is clear that he has consummated the relationship with us and thousands of fans who would soon swoon over the vids. And at the end, after he gently strokes us down, there is something both humble and proud in his smile—he knows full well that he has just created something epic.
We would see it all again, transformed into a cohesive vision. The feathers and the jewels would take on new meaning as part of the glam-punk costume design. The songs would be rearranged to lead us through seduction and vulnerability and connection. The theme of love would be woven throughout. But like glitter in the sand, Fantasy Springs was the twinkle in Adam’s eye that would ultimately lead to the beauty that was GNT. And those who were there, by their enthusiastic acceptance and love, surely gave him the confidence to take the next steps.
Something of the vision Adam had in the Nevada desert came to life in the desert in Palm Springs. This time, instead of hallucinogen-induced, it was real—created out of his imagination and the will of his desire. He made us all see it, and we haven’t been able to look away since.

I noticed something strange yesterday
2.27.11 by Q3
Whenever anything Adam is released online, there are usually a flood of comments from Adam fans and a few detractors. But this one comment on the Glamnation Sleepwalker VEVO video stood out to me.
"Wow..this is really good..what a voice."
There is nothing more to say than that. Nothing. (Well you know I could just stop there!!!)
Here and there, I noticed a few similar comments from people who are otherwise impartial about Adam. What struck me was the simplicity of these comments and the focus on The Voice.
Being creative is by definition being different, and being different is risky. No one can deny that Adam takes risks -- sometimes they seemed to be calculated risks but often they were intuitive, emotionally-driven risks.
Research has found that people often don't initially like rare or unfamiliar things, but to succeed, brands, products and even performers need to be differentiated, bring something new. (That is why there is "new" Tide laundry detergent and the "new and improved" Apple iPod.
The exact same ideas that people initially dislike in an artist, are the things that make an artist significant.
Over time, with repetitive exposures, thinly-veiled attempts to differentiate by an artist become tiresome and the audience gets fatigued and moves on to the next pop sensation. But sometimes when an artist is uniquely talented that differentiation becomes what makes them "iconic".
In Adam's THS, Barry Weiss, Chairman and the CEO of RCA/Jive Label Group, commented that Adam is not afraid to take risks to carve out a niche for himself. I think that same fearlessness is what will help Adam go wherever he is destined and wants to go.
I am not claiming that Adam is an icon but I do believe that he has the innate potential to become an icon. He has already managed to be substantially outside of cultural norms and still be commercially successful. And, that, is a huge accomplishment.
Now a video of Adam with full make-up on, a partially shave head, wearing about 10,000 pieces of jewelry, and a superglam costume is posted and many people see past all of that and see, and hear, a person.
There is not betterer way to say it:
"Wow..this is really good..what a voice."
