This is a remarkable testament to the creative collaborative power of the internet and TikTok. A high schooler wrote this song and now Adam Lambert from Queen is singing it in concert produced by Broadway producers with Disney’s permission. #ratatouillethemusical
There is something about the creative origins and path of Ratatouille the TikTok Musical that is intriguing - the TikTok demo. Each major social media platform has a specific orientation:
Facebook - social relationships and now is moving into business relationship.
Twitter - news and information.
Instagram - visuals - photos and now video.
Soundcloud - music sharing, remixes.
Tikok is also unique. It was started as a social media platform for creating, sharing and discovering short music videos (as the app musical.ly) was used by young people as an outlet to express themselves through singing, dancing, comedy, and lip-syncing. Today, it is dominating the creation of micro video content.
Almost 50% of TikTok’s over 1 billon global audience is under the age of 34. 26 % are aged between 18 and 24. This is an enormously attractive audience for entertainment products, including music. This is the target age group for music discovery promoting -- pop radio and before that jukeboxes and sheet music.
It's not news that TikTok is a great place to discover new music and reach fans or that Gen-Z are orientated to DIY and crowdsourcing. But what is new is that this might be a way to reinvent musical theater and other forms of traditional entertainment. What do you think?
