Berting Through the Holidays

The holidays will soon be upon us and blah blah blah who cares. More importantly we seem to be on the cusp of FINALLY hearing new music and a MASSIVE EPIC WORLDWIDE EXPLOSION OF ALL THINGS ADAM that may actually kill us all, if early buzz is to be believed. At this time of the year, many publications print "How Survive the Holidays" guides, and I didn't want us to be left out. When you think about it, Adam stans have acquired lots of ~skills over the past months/years, and these can be put to good use during the holiday season:

Gift-buying- Most Adam fans have acquired A+ computer skills over the last year, and can whip up a coffee mug, calendar, afghan, or tissue-paper cozy with Adam's likeness in no time flat. So just go ahead and make some nice personalized gifts using pics of family and friends and in no time at all… What's that you say? You "accidentally" deleted all of the non-Adam photos from your PC because you were running out of valuable storage space? Okay, I have two words for you, people: gift cards. However, if time runs out, you will need to resort to whatever you can pick up at the gas station on your way to holiday gatherings. Believe me, nothing says "I love you" better than a handful of beef jerky sticks, and those rear-view-mirror air-freshener thingies make awesome stocking stuffers for the tots. They especially love "New Car Smell," I'm told.

Decorating- Remember all the fun you had spending hours decorating your home for the holidays? Yeah, me neither. Short-cuts will save the day. You probably never got around to taking down the lights from last year, so you're good there. The glow from your laptop is pretty darn festive; who needs candles? Choose one of your last living houseplants and use up the remainder of your spray-on glitter on it, arrange your left-over glowsticks in a nice vase and you're golden!

Holiday cards- Some people spend hours creating and personalizing cards to let friends and family know about the important events from the last year. Let's be honest—most of this last year was spent making love to the F5 button waiting for something,anything to happen. A little-known truth—your friends and family care deeply about the environment and would really prefer that you send them a mass email rather than actual cards. Just think of their happy little faces when they see "2012 is Gonna Rock!!" in that subject line!

Parties- This is a tricky one. People will expect you to show up at their homes in festive garb and engage in congenial social banter. Meanwhile, epic events are happening in the fandom, and you will be left out! Solution: bring along your smart device of choice, and let your hosts know right at the beginning that you are "on-call." Never mind that you work part-time at the town petting zoo or whatever—put on your best serious-business face and proceed to scroll Twitter with a furrowed brow at regular intervals. If anything important occurs, retreat to the bathroom to bert in peace until concerned party-goers pound at the door and threaten to call 911.

Unexpected guests- Okay, this is where you really gotta draw the line, folks. It's one thing to tolerate pink-cheeked young-uns singing carols. I mean, all you have to do is ignore the doorbell and crank the volume on your latest HHHHHDDDD mp17 d/l of Adam's EMA performance and all is well. But some people actually expect to be greeted warmly just because they arrive with good wishes and plates of cookies. The solution is to apply a goodly amount of blush around your eyes and nose, answer the door in your robe clutching a box of tissues, and cough loudly until your visitors retreat in alarm. Be sure to grab the cookies, though. It'll save you a trip to the grocery store.

The holidays can be a stressful time, but with the right attitude and coping strategies, we can survive. Now, back to that F5 button…
