I am too late to join in the discussion. As usual, I just read and appreciate everyone's comments on this forum...my guilty pleasure.
I have a little different perspective about Adam and his compulsion to wear makeup, change his hair color and his ever evolving style. He was actually employed as a makeup artist (a few newbies may not be aware of this). He started experimenting when he was just a kid; he loved helping his teenage classmates, and still helps adult friends with their makeup for special occasions. The thing is, he is an ARTIST in more ways than one. Artists don't just draw or paint one item. They try many subject matters and materials for their art. Experimentation is a necessity in fulfillment of ones quest for perfection, personal satisfaction and ultimately to gain the attention of others and maybe even get paid to do it.
In Adam's case, his makeup, hair and clothing are things he loves to experiment with and perhaps one of his most enjoyable ways of getting attention which is a good thing to keep him in the thoughts and minds of the media. He gives them many different looks to put in their articles. I doubt they would bother posting photos of or even mentioning him if he always looked the same. He no longer grabs their interest by being gay or misbehaving. His dislike of 45 was the only thing that got published recently. Covid-19 is preventing him from singing and performing in front of audiences so he is replacing his singing talent with another talent.
I personally think that Adam is probably feeling bored and lonely which is far from his preferred way of life...he doesn't have an 8-10 hour workday, a daily commute, a spouse, kids, cooking for a family, house cleaning, doing the gardening, dealing with car troubles, making household repairs, etc. like many of us. Most of us have little time to tend to our normal grooming much less experimenting with it. When he was busy touring with Queen, his looks were pretty consistently normal...except for the red hair! After the Glam Nation tour, he admitted that the glitter was getting to be a little too much..Lol. Adam is just being his creative self. Who else spends time dying their dog's tail? I think the healthy thing for us to do is just appreciate the things we like and laugh off those that are not in our wheelhouse. I'm pretty sure Adam has a few chuckles when he sees some photo's of himself.
As to my personal taste, I am dying to see Adam someday with his real hair color (before it all turns gray)! I like his hair lighter and fluffier rather than the black slicked down look, Also dislike the almost shaved sides...makes me want to fire the barber. I have an immense appreciation of all the hair on the top that he is so blessed with. The beard is OK if kept short but I wouldn't mind if he shaved it off once in a while. His mustache distracts from his luscious lips so that could go as well. His eyebrows are slightly darker and thicker than I prefer. He has gorgeous eyes and lovely, unusually long lashes require a little mascara (since they are not naturally dark) and I don't mind a light application of foundation and eye shadow. The metallic, unnatural lipstick is OK....for Halloween! His clothing choices as in “more is more” could be “a little less is better” except in the middle of winter. I don't mind most of his clothing and jewelry... they are usually in good taste and sometimes quite stunning.
In closing, I am very excited to see his virtual live concert and hope it makes Adam's birthday worth remembering.

Good take hotouthere , artistry → creativity → skills → boredom → too much downtime. Throw in an online shopping habit and there you have it. He just needs an editor. It's all the pandemics fault! :D
