I am just going to step into the Christmas discussion to mention that as a teacher, in CA, I "taught" the holidays every year. It was actually part of our Social Studies program in CA first grade. We did Hannukah, Christmas, Kwanza, and others. The children LOVED it! I taught in a school with a high Mexican American population so the kids were mostly Catholic. They had so much fun learning about what other people do for the holidays. Playing the Dreidel game and eating Latkes were among their favorite activities. We dealt with the customs and not the religion. Never, in 12 years at first grade, did we ever have a parent complaint. This is the perfect way to handle it, IMO. There's nothing wrong with teaching children about the traditions of the world as long as everybody's traditions are included and nothing is presented as The Truth. Children can be told in their own homes and churches that their beliefs are the ones that matter, but a school should never show a preference. I think many children would be amazed to learn how much of the Christmas celebration has its roots in so-called pagan holidays. BTW, Rachel Maddow pointed out that the jacket Rick Perry is wearing in his boo-gays, yay-Christians ad is the same one that Heath Ledger wore in "Brokeback Mountain." ;D |
