Adam Lambert creating '70s-set rock 'n' roll musical about who?
3.23.21 by Q3
Speaking on the Brenda, Call Me podcast with Courtney Act and Vanity, Adam said he is working on a musical is set in the 1970s and will feature a variety of rock 'n' roll numbers. He said, "With this musical I got paired up with amazing songwriters so I'm approaching it sort of like a pop album, but it's still a musical."
Adam also talked vaguely about the musical last autumn, stating on Lorraine that he was in London creating the piece. He said the show is based on the life of "an actual person", stating: "I'm starting to become interested in planting seeds in the creative space where it's not necessarily for my own music, but to create other projects behind the scenes, to be a producer or a writer or a consultant. There's definitely some stuff in the works. I'm getting geared up for that...With this project, more than ever, I feel like I'm more in the driver's seat."
So who is this musical about?
Seems likely to be a man who is not living, from a genre that Adam is comfortable with.
My guess is that It is glam rock, and the originator, T. Rex frontman Marc Bolan.
Glam rock -- because the music is wonderful and there is all the glitter, platform shoes, and so on.
British -- This movement originated in the UK and was much less prevalent in the USA. And Adam was working on it in London.
Other glam rock artists: The most famous British glam rock artist, David Bowie, seems unlikely because of rights issues. I thought about Elton John and Freddie for a few moments, seems like they are too famous. There is Gary Glitter. Then, there are a lot of less famous glam rock musicians who were bands: Mott the Hoople, Sweet, Slade, Mud, and Roxy Music. There are a few American glam artists: Suzi Quatro (female), Iggy Pop (not very glam) and Jobriath (unusual and interesting life but seems forgotten now).
Marc Bolan had an interesting life, died at 29 years old, and his musical style is still relevant. Plus, he defined glam:
My final bit of evidence for ending up here. Adam has consistently referenced Glam Rock. In 2009 he described his first album, For You Entertainment, “We tried to nod to all that glam classic rock while creating a variety of different music. But at the same time I wanted to make music that was really modern and current and poppy too. I love commercial pop music,” he said. He labeled one of his tours, Glam Nation Tour. And he is, of course, Glambert.
My bet is on Marc Bolan, what's yours?
