I love most of this fantasy art, and I bought the print Linda posted above. It is even nicer in real life with the striking colors than it appears above. I framed it nicely and have hung it up in my home.
Buder's comments go to the heart of what makes something art, and that's something that each person must answer for themselves. Fan art is certainly not intended as fine art or commercial art. It doesn't work outside of the intersection between art and fandom, and that intersects at a different place for each person, I would imagine.
A non-fan would not have the background knowledge to put the work in context; on the flip side, some fans may not want to engage with the artist's vision because it conflicts too much with their own. And I think that is OK.
The fantasy art to me is beautiful because it embodies a message of hope and Adam as a hero triumphant, and I love that.

Good morning!
Happy birthday, Melisende and Iridium!!!
Have a wonderful day.
I am enjoying the art. When you are first motivated to pick up a sketch pad or paintbrush, its often because you are so inspired by something you find profoundly beautiful and interesting, that you are compelled to capture it and convey the feeling that it evokes in you. Whether that's a flower, landscape, a tiny, everyday detail or a stunning animal or human being, it has struck the artist and they felt compelled to express that feeling. Following that muse (and sometimes imitating) is how artists develop.
Artist shaming has thwarted more talent than anything in this world. I hope whatever inspires them to keep working at their craft - whether it's a hobby or they're destined to be the next Monet or Adam Lambert - having people harshly judging their early efforts or choice of subjects can forever stifle the ability to create.

I've often spent time trying to pinpoint what it is about Adam that is so magical so I really liked yesterday's challenge of describing him in three words. I hope it is not too long but I compiled the words posted (sorry if I missed some due to my darn distracting kids!). Funny thing is, as long as it is, I still think it's missing some words . And it's also interesting to note that talented wasn't listed much, or even sexy--he's just so hard to capture with a word. I THINK the words repeated most often were Fierce Mesmerizing Fearless and Beautiful.

I don't have artistic talent, but I do love to write. When I was in high school, I wrote for the school paper, and I also wrote fiction. I still remember submitting one of my stories for the literary magazine. I suppose it was OTT, but the teacher told me that I had better stick with writing non-fiction. I cried my heart out, and I totally took it to heart. After all, he was the teacher, right? He ought to know. I didn't write any more fiction for more than 10 years. I did become a professional writer, which I still am -- technical, business, marketing, etc. When the internet came along, I found out about fan fiction. There was a TV show I loved, so I stuck my toe back out there and started writing stories. People seemed to love them and I was very encouraged. Five years ago I published my first novel (not fan related), following up three years later with my second. Both were very well-reviewed. Susie is right. You have to crawl before you can walk, you have to walk before you can run, you have to run before you can fly. One last thing: a good friend of mine told me not long ago that she played the piano very well as a young person. Then she told me she quit because "I realized I would never be concert level." I still feel sad about her brief story. Now she is in her 60s. Think of the decades of enjoyment that she and her friends would have had. But it was all "no good" because it couldn't be the ultimate.

I do understand your point but also feel that mass adoration of questionable talent is akin to giving trophies to everyone on the team purely for participating. Were I to speak directly to any of these aspiring artists I would encourage them to seek competent training to develop their skills. What I would not encourage is their sending their attempts out into a cruel world before they are ready. I am the cruel world in this case I guess, but dealing with rejection without losing your own vision for yourself is a valuable lesson and one that IMO we should not shield them from learning at an early age.
