5 Adam Lambert Songs That Should Have Been Singles
We pick the songs that should have been singles from the singer’s catalogue.
by ByPip Ellwood-Hughes
This year marks the 12th anniversary of the release of Adam Lambert’s debut album ‘For Your Entertainment’, which arrived in 2009 only months after the singer came second on season 8 of ‘American Idol’.
Since then, Lambert has established himself as a credible solo artist with four studio albums under his belt and he’s been performing with Queen since 2014, completing several world tours to widespread critical acclaim.
Lambert’s latest album ‘Velvet’ was released in 2020 and while we wait for new music, we’ve been digging through Lambert’s catalogue to pick the 5 songs I think should have been singles. Keep reading to find out our choices…
1. ‘Strut’
Originally featured on ‘For Your Entertainment’, ‘Strut’ has long been a favourite of mine from Lambert. The squelchy electro-pop stomper was co-written by Lambert with Kara DioGuardi and Greg Wells, with production from Wells. The perfect blend of Lambert’s soaring vocals and contemporary pop, it could have been a huge hit.
2. ‘Shady’ featuring Nile Rodgers & Sam Sparro
This underrated gem from ‘Trespassing’ was a little ahead of its time and saw Lambert teaming up with legend Nile Rodgers and pop star Sam Sparro. The funky groove was written by Lambert, Sparro and Lester Mendez, and it never fails to get me bopping along. How was this not a huge worldwide smash? Missed opportunity I think.
3. ‘Underneath’
Lambert is known for his incredible vocals and on ‘Trespassing’ album track ‘Underneath’ he showcased his jaw-dropping range. Maybe it wasn’t a choice as a single because piano ballads weren’t the done thing at the time but for me, it’s one of Lambert’s finest vocal performances. The passion and emotion in his voice is so moving, it’s a firm favourite of mine.
4. ‘The Original High’
When it came to singles from Lambert’s third album ‘The Original High’, fans were short changed as they only got two! There were so many highlights on this record, which is my favourite Lambert album to date. Moving him into a more dance-oriented direction, the title track from the record is euphoric with a pumping house beat and could have dominated the charts.
5. ‘Evil In The Night’
Another gem from ‘The Original High’ is the 90s throwback ‘Evil in the Night’. That beat and the rhythms take me back to the good old days of 90s dance but with Lambert’s distinctive vocals, it’s a contemporary slice of pop perfection. Anyone else get shivers when he lets that gritty side of his voice out? A huge hit that never was.
