12.21.11 The Radio Game goes on!!!

Music, books, and magazines are often stocked by jobbers not by the stores. Big retailers like supermarkets and even places like Wal-Mart will contract with a distributor who basically is given a section of the store to stock and they are responsible for determining what gets stocked. Or everything is computer tracked and reorder is triggered when stock level hit certain points. It is much easier for the store to allocate an area and leave it up to the distributer to stock then in that case the distributor would decide what products would be on the shelves. This is why distribution deals are so important for independant artist in music, print and film. Without a distribution deal you can't get on the store shelves. Years ago my Mother-In-Law self published a book and then discovered the nightmare of trying to sell a book without a distribution deal. Even the local grocery stores wouldn't stock it because they had exclusive contracts with distributors to stock all their print products. She couldn't get a distribution deal so spent the next few years doing demos at every festival and fair she could get to in Louisiana in order to sell her book. This is why no matter how good an independent artist is they won't be on Wal-Mart's shelves without a distribution deal.


On another note, I fianlly got MY charity water photo. Something I noticed is that it came direct from Charity Water and not 19 as I believe the earlier ones did. I figured I'd never get mine because I was in the first email request for addresses that was sent out and many of those who got their pictures had not gotten the email address request until later. I would guess that once Adam was no longer with 19, charity water took it upon themselves to make sure the promise was fulfilled.
