With a lot of gay men that I know, there is "thin" and then there is "gay thin" -- this is only intensified when one lives in Hollywood. I used to live in the West LA area, and it is really difficult to feel good about yourself if you are overweight or out of shape there (at least it was for me). I am old enough now not to care, but at the time I was in my late 20's and living in Santa Monica (next to the beach) and many people judge you on how you look there. I think Adam's body image is definitely affected by 1)being a gay man in So. CA, 2) being in the industry and living in So. CA and 3) just being a human with some past weight problems. He is gorgeous -- but don't we all become more critical of ourselves sometimes? I have similar experiences. Many of my gay friends are very thin, and it often sounds like they are even more careful about the weight than women. Also, my boyfriend who is very thin and dresses in European slim fit clothing that emphasizes the thinness is often being flirted to by gay men, especially in So Cal. I recall him telling me once, totally clueless, that some guy had admired his thinness. He hadn't realized that the thinness and the fitted clothing may play a role in the attention he gets. |
