It's funny. Now that you mention convenience stores, I don't think I've set foot in one since I started on this fitness kick two years ago. I can't remember the last time. I pay for gas at the pump and just don't go in because there's nothing in there for me. I used to make a midnight run to the convenience store nearly every day: cigarettes, soda, Snapple, candy, pretzels, Pringles, Doritos. Hmmm...maybe that's why I got fat!!!! www.sugarstacks.com

Lots of great stuff on here ladies! hwc - thanks for the articles. Lakato - what happened to your mom totally sucks. I get why you are a bit biased about Atkins! I completely agree with focusing on just losing 5 pounds. That's exactly what I'm doing - taking it 5 pounds at a time. As far as low carb stuff, I agree that it's not healthy to adopt this type of eating as a lifestyle. I think our bodies need to have balanced nutrition. I'm going to avoid carbs during the week. No bread, no pasta, no potatoes. Just lots of protein & healthy fats. I'll see what happens this week & then maybe I can sneak in a few extra carbs on the weekend. Need to find that balance to see how many carbs I can eat & still lose weight. Gotta read more about that insulin resistance thing. That's kinda fascinating. Again, thanks to hwc for the links!

Oh one more thing I wanted to say - I'm not trying to lose a huge amount of weight. If I lost 40 pounds I'd be back to what I weighed 40 years ago, but I don't need to be that thin. I'm not young anymore (even though mentally I feel like I'm about 14 sometimes) so I have a very realistic goal of losing about 20 pounds. If I can find a balance with diet & exercise where I can lose even more, that would be great, but I sure ain't gonna go through the rest of my life skimping on meals & avoiding every little piece of chocolate that passes in front on me! And an occasional glass of alcohol can be very therapeutic! ;D

I kinda shocked myself. I started at a peak of 250 pounds. I took it five pounds at a time, but in my wildest dreams best case scenario I was hoping to ride it down to 180 pounds. I hit that a year ago after about 10 months of diet and exercise. I was thrilled. Then, a funny thing happened. I started strength training with a little more ooomph (dong a program from a great book New Rules of Lifting for Abs) and the weight just kept coming off. By the fourth of July, I had dropped another 20 pounds down to 160, which is where I've been, give or take ever since. So anyway, don't sell yourself short. Just start the journey, enjoy the ride, and see where it takes you. ------------- Short, but brutal workout for me today. Four high intensity intervals on an Airdyne bike. 3/4 miles for each interval (just over 2 minutes), recovering with easy pedalling after each one 'til my heart rate fell to 64% of my max. I saw the highest heart rate I have ever seen. My heart rate after the four intervals was 89%, 96%, 97%, and 100% of my actual max. 27 minutes start to finish. If any of your gyms have one of these bikes, it's a fat-burning machine!

Sorry for the late check in.
Thanks Jablea for the kind reminder and encouragement!
This week lost 0. So far -2.
Did really well all week but this past weekend I was invited to a girls weekend with 6 other Adam Friends. We had a blast! Totally blow my diet with tons of food and lots of cocktails.
So I am going to work really hard this week on staying on task and will spend time here getting caught up on all the thread. I have been mia here.

I'd like to have a bike like that. Don't speak so soon. It's really a diabolical torture machine. Been in production, essentially unhchanged, since the 1970s. Doesn't even plug into the wall. The killer is that the resistance is from fan blades on the front wheel. So, the faster you pedal, the harder it gets. If you pedal twice as fast, the resistance increase four times. That and the fact that it is working arms and legs just sucks the oxygen out of your lungs. Here's a very, very strong, fit kid, 25 years old, doing intervals on an Airdyne, pedaling fast for just 20 seconds at a time (although with very short 10 second rest intervals). Watch how gassed he is towards the end of a four minute workout: The same concept can be used to do intervals on any kind of cardio equipment -- or just walking/jogging outdoors. Maybe start out with 1:3 work:rest ratio -- so 20 seconds fast alternating with 60 seconds slow. Later, you can go to 1:2 or 20 seconds fast with 40 seconds slow. This lets you get a fantastic fat-burning cardio workout in 15 or 20 minutes. No need for an hour on the exercise bike.

Late check-in: bad week--sick for 4 days and had a hard time getting motivated to move after that. This week will be better.

Wednesday - Mix it Up
We know Adam does it in his looks, his hair cuts, his clothes. Mixing it up is also good for your muscles. Train them one way for awhile and then train them another. Go a different route on your walk, walk backwards even. Do machine weights one week and hand weights the next.
glitz, hope you are feeling better. Feeling sick is the pits.
