I am throwing out a question for consideration. There is a local fuss going on calling for Justin Bieber to cancel a concert in Saudi Arabia for the Formula 1 races. Leading the call is the widow of the journalist the Saudi's lured to the embassy then literally chopped him in pieces and took them out in garbage bags. I am on the board of a Documents film festival on my island, and one of the films that you may see in the future, is called Caviar Connection and it chronicles the abuses of the governing family of Azerbaijan...one of the numerous focusses is the attempts of this country to 'rehabilitate' their image in the world by having major celebrities perform there.....in. the recent past they had Lady Gaga and Bieber and I am thinking it was Jay Z...which is odd as Beyonce is leading this call for Bieber to back out of this Saudi concert. All said....using big rock and pop stars is a common way for major nasty regimes to look good.
How do we feel about Adam performing in this manner? Can a celebrity be held to task for the dirty money they are prepared to accept? Is there any justification? Not buying from companies that go against our ethical and moral guidelines has become a way for people to make their voices heard so does this issue fit in this situation? I am not talking about the whole 'woke' thing...just how we feel about celebrities...in particular, Adam...performing in this environment. Just curious....

Mszue, I think it is a judgement call on the part of the artists and their management, including Adam. Lorde at one point was convinced to cancel her concert in Israel. Adam and Queen performed there and so did Bieber. When Adam was invited to perform at the Maxidrum Rock Festival in Moscow many years ago, there were gay activists who did not want him to perform there because of the anti-gay climate. He did anyway. And one of the homophobic DJs, who had been making fun of him on the radio before, practically fell in love with him after he interviewed him. He said he didn't know he was so tall and handsome then took pictures with his arms around him. Even the press changed their tune after he performed. They said they thought he would be a "sissy" but admitted they were wrong and instead they found him to be a combination of Elvis and Guns N Roses. Of course this was Adam's first time performing in Russia and before he was with Queen and more widely known. And if Adam refused to perform any place that discriminates against gays, he probably couldn't perform anywhere, even in parts of the US. And when Adam performed in Malaysia, the government wanted assurances from him that he would keep it clean and dances covered up some. The religious fanatics wanted his show cancelled because of his sexuality. He toned it down some and gave a very nice concert to many fans who were thrilled to see him. Around that same time, Beyonce refused to tone down her show or alter her/dancers outfits some and instead pulled out and disappointed her fans in Malaysia. She was at a very different stage of her career and that was the choice she made.
None of those situations were anything like Saudi Arabia but artists often have decisions to make. I would trust Adam and team to take everything into consideration and make their best judgement.
