I'd forgotten about this and for someone for whom US radio is a total mystery, this is quite clear. Can you (or anyone else) explain how auto-adds are given before the official adds dates? Preferably in words of one syllable  Some stations do their Mediabase playlist adds automatically -- playing a song X times in one week = an add. Usually it is 7 times in one week = an auto add. Other stations submit their playlist adds to Mediabase. US radio is still on "holiday" today so that we will prob only see auto ads today. Adds = an addition to a radio station's playlist which is required by most radio stations before a song can get more than a few on-air plays. Add Date (AKA Impact Date) = the date the the record labels promotions are targeted to have the most impact on. Stations can add a song prior to that date, or after that date. Radio Release Date = the first day that radio stations can play a song. Radio is North America is based on the same process -- a PD (Program Director) selects the songs for the playlist, the on-air personalities play those songs. Other released songs can be played in special programs, by request and in contests, but this airplay is limited. Radio in most of the world is run in a similar manner -- but there are exceptions in every market. Primarily, public radio, state-owned radio, and college/indie radio are not operated using the commercial radio model. The commercial radio model is used to make sure that the advertisers get the audience they pay for -- ratings and demos. |

Hoppers, I am finishing up on reading last nights thread and just have tears in my eyes reading about your NYs party mayhem. I am also still trying to recover the remains of my basement and need to also return the family room back to its former glory. So I can sympathize. But nothing like what you have encountered. It sounds like you guys had a hell of a family party going. HSM's post is on the last page yesterday, if you missed it.
Otherwise, I am just catching up. Loved to hear that the Shanghai video sounded so great. You could hear the audience get more and more enthusiastic as the songs went on, especially after Strut, which we unfortunately could not see, but there was thunderous applause. Adam must have just strutted this out in all his glam-glory.
It is always amazing to see how much more Asian audiences react to this style of performing. They just love the camp, love the retro beats, love the fun atmosphere of it. I think that perhaps the average American mainstream audiences just somehow cannot easily connect to that style of humor or 'view-of-things' and in the end that is why Bowie may have had a tough time and Queen when they went in this direction, and Robbie is not landing here and I sense that Adam is also struggling with that side of his performance art. Cultures tend to each have their own unique sense of humor, and it is one of the hardest things to translate into other cultures, perhaps even harder than language itself. But Adam naturally seems to resonate with this Japanese audience and it is quite remarkable to watch.
On the translation: Cassie, sorry to read that this ASL translation is so off and would love to watch a well done one. There are though a couple of questions I have about it, hope you don't mind:
a) what is really the goal here? If somebody is deaf or partially hearing impaired, but is able to see the person signing, then they also can read the lyrics, so is the focus on presenting the rhythmic aspects of the song and the phrasing. It looks like there was quite some focus on that in the video?
b) I often notice that in regular speech, signers have trouble keeping up with the speed of normal speech, presumably because they need to wait for the whole phrase before they can begin to translate. In a song like this, the lyrics are known and the translation can be prepared. Yet it seems still tough, just to get the signs executed in time. Does the translator have to drop stuff, just because they cannot keep up?
c) Is the ASL vocabulary so much smaller than regular English? I just did a fly-by translation of BTIKM into German and there are no strange expressions or unusual words in this song. It is actually reasonably easy to translate, as compared to something like DTRH, which is impossible to translate, as you can probably understand or a song like Broken Open, which is somewhere in the middle. With some effort you could also translate BTIKM and stay inside the given rhythmic patterns, because for most parts of the lyrics I would have 3-4 choices to work with in German. How come this is so tough to translate into ASL?
d) Finally, I do have a personal question for you. Did you learn ASL as part of your studies or are you a "native speaker" and have learned it as a child? How tough is it to get proficient? Is the signer in that video just not familiar enough with ASL or does he not properly grasp the lyrics or what is his problem?

Thank you so much for your translations!  Question: Sauli comes across as so adorably cute in these translations. Just love him! But is part of the 'cute factor' due to the translation? Or is he just as adorable in his native language? Well, if he comes across as cute in English, he's even more so in Finnish LOL. His language is rich and he makes sometimes his own words. Translation doesn't do justice to his funny words. His spelling sucks LOL but his official blog is edited for that, his Hollywood blog not. His writing style is his own and I think presents him very well - he just is like that in person too. I'm so happy to hear you say that. I'm one of the crazies who sits and listens to the entire Tutka video with a smile on my face but not understanding a word they are saying. No reason, I just love to watch the emotions and enjoyment flow across his face. He seems like such a gentle, joyous soul. My feelings about his and Adam's relationship is that they are equals in most ways and good for one another. Someone mentioned that Sauli should have spoken up about his part in "the incident" but I don't really know if I agree. Adam is the one in the spotlight (except with us who are happy to drag Sauli into it) and unless Adam wrote Sauli's declaration, it could be taken wrong, dissected until they found something wrong and it would be Adam's career that was impacted, not Sauli's. In matters like that, I'd think he would defer to Adam, but otherwise, I think Adam has found his match, a strong, warm person who loves him and will compromise, but will not be dictated to. I remember my heart palpitations when Adam confided to FUSE that he is a caretaker but sometimes he would like someone to take care of HIM. Sauli seems to be that person. Go ahead and ask, AND I KNOW THAT HOW?????? Speculation, just as everything else is, but I believe it. |

Anyone know how they come up with these numerical ratings? I am so excited for everything to really take off. It is going to happen; I feel it! I imagined it was a critic's score, just like any ratings, but instead of 3/4/5 stars, they give it a numerical rating on a scale of 100. If you go to the "Highest Rated" and scroll back, those that scored the 90s are only a couple of pages and some go back to 2009. I tried to find some of Adele's scores for "21," and haven't been able to, but someone said on Twitter that BTIKM was rated higher than RITD. It seems like the country reviewer is more generous. There are more Brad Paisley songs rating really high than anyone that I saw right away. |
