It makes it hard to talk about families, sort of negates a lot of marriages that kids might already have with two daddies or two mommies. I have a friend with two moms who wrote a child's picture book for her baby niece about her two Grannies. It teaches the alphabet using words for grandmother from all over the world. You could not use that book to teach the alphabet in Florida schools no matter how many abuelas you had. While the bill completely outlaws lessons about sexual orientation for K-3, what they don't talk about is that it also prohibits lessons in other grades unless they are "age-appropriate and developmentally appropriate." There is no discussion about what that means but it is does give parents the right to sue school districts, so you know where that's heading. Got it! So it is not so much about saying gay or teaching lessons about sexuality in k-3 grade. It is more about not even acknowledging parents of the same sex in a picture book or something. Kids will likely see parents of the same sex, if any student has them. Are they planning to keep same sex couples from attending school events or showing an interest in their child? If you think it is that taboo and harmful, I would think you would have to take the next step. These mostly grown men seem to be scared of everything. I remember when Marco Rubio was being interviewed years ago and he was almost in tears when talking about same sex marriage. I wanted to say calm down little Marco. Gay men will NOT be showing up at your door and asking for your hand in marriage. And if they do, you can always say NO, lol.

The bill was originally written so that a teacher or student could not mention gay at all, but that was moderated to "lessons". Not really that much of a step since the rest of the bill is so broad, but I guess they were worried some poor 5 yr old would talk about their gay sibling to a friend and a parent would sue because a teacher didn't stop the story. Teachers were freaking out. Yup, agree, fear and avarice. I have to say, that the "Don't say gay" slogan is brilliant branding. Not something that liberals are usually good at, but this time it's got conservatives defensive and trying to explain. It's a sorry excuse for a bill and I hope the axiom of 'if you have to explain you've already lost' will be its eventual demise. By that I do mean eventual because it has already passed both Florida legislative branches and I have no doubt that DeSantis will sign it. And let's not get into Paxton and Abbott's trans child executive order. My blood pressure will spike and I have to sleep tonight.

It's so easy to say, "Just make sure that discussions in school about sex are age-appropriate." But this bill is loaded with landmines. People are being primed to narc on each other and restrict even the most innocuous comments. This bill is based on ignorance and fear, plain and simple.
