Mercedes-Benz Arena
Queen + Adam Lambert in Berlin –Nostalgia Party without Patina Freddie Mercury was brought to life twice on Friday evening with old recordings in the Mercedes-Benz Arena.
High up from the big video screen under the ceiling, he laughed, he joked. And could be quite happy with how his old band friends Brian May and Roger Taylor, their backing musicians and singers Adam Lambert managed his legacy down there. Lambert pointed out early on the show that Freddie is actually "the irreplaceable." But it is precisely this burden of making the impossible possible that the American has been carrying on his shoulders for ten years now. And has established himself as an independent entertainer who knows exactly how to interpret the Queen songs and how to animate the fans. And they, it seemed on Friday, see him as anything but an emergency solution. May, 74, and Taylor, 72, were looking at the desire to play in their eyes. They weren't here to replenish their retirement savings, they were hot. And so Queen anthems like "Another One Bites The Dust", "Crazy Little Things Called Love" or "Love Of My Life" (May: "For Freddie!") all sounded very fresh, never like yesterday. And May liked to demonstrate again and again with impressive, but never overlong solos, why he and his guitar have created a sound for eternity. Queen is always also optics, and it was also on Friday. A huge load of videos poured down on the viewers, taking them into space and other beautiful worlds. It was never cheap sensory overload, no, it was artistically valuable. But Queen is also: Rock and Roll. And why did the interior have to be seated, we weren't in the opera here? And Brian May, who always liked to sprint to the front edge of the catwalk with his guitar, it would have to be very warm to the heart if he was received by billowing crowds of fans there. He will know why chairs are the solution. The sound in the hall, it could have been a bit louder for rock fans, but that's a matter of taste, of course. And if the fans themselves sing along, as so often this evening, the problem is lifted anyway. Of course, they also sang along to "We Are The Champions", which was of course the final song. Champions, that was Queen that evening. With a nostalgia sause, whose songs have no patina. The Show must go on, and that for years to come, it would certainly not be a mistake. Oh, our local yellow press newspaper with a good review? Wow. 😁 The show was fabulous and I enjoyed every minute! My only question is still: Why was the concert seated? Even the writer of that review wondered... It was the first time that there wasn’t general admission on the floor for a QAL concert in Germany. All the years before it was standing on the floor. I still remember the shock, when the tickets went on sale. We had been ready in front of our computers, prepared to buy General Admission tickets - and BAM! The floor was seated with skyhigh ticket prises! It had been a shock and my friends and I had to find out immediately, how much we were ready to pay and to which concerts we will go under these completely new circumstances. I mean, the seats in the front of the floor cost 369-469€ instead of the usual 100€ for GA. It was a shock. However, that had been 2 years and 9 months in the past, so (almost) forgotten. Until last night. When the Intro of Innuendo started. My friend and I had seats in the middle of the first row in front of the B-stage. Since the stage is pretty high and there had been photographers in front of us, we stood up. It’s a rock concert after all and we have NEVER sat on the floor. Immediately about 10 people in the rows behind us complained and shouted, that we must sit down. Because they can’t see. Well, we couldn’t see either... But since they were many, we did sit down. I was fuming, because I could only see maybe half of that Intro with all people and stage blocking my view. Mainly the B-Stage. My friend slowly counted to 10. That was at the time, when Brian played the first cords of Now I‘m Here. And we decided, we’re not here to sit. So we got up again and thankfully most people to my right side did as well...the people to our left all stayed seated. The people behind us - well, they had no choice and slowly more and more got up. I mean, they must have realized, that you can’t see the main stage, while you’re sitting? After all that’s were the magic mainly happens in the beginning. In the end, most of the people on the floor did stand and dance and sing for the whole concert. We had a brilliant night! Only that short period in the beginning wasn’t as nice. And like the writer from our newspaper, I have no idea, who had the bad idea, to have a rock concert all seated. I was able to take some pictures and this turned out as my favorite one. I‘ve seen it posted by someone else here before, but I just love it! And most of my pictures didn’t turn out that well, because of the blending lights.
