Fighting the Good Fight
1/8/2012 by NoAngel
As a reward for all our patience, we are finally at the point where promo is happening, and soon our quiet little fandom will explode with people newly discovering Adam and joining us on the roller coaster. We’ve had Adam all to ourselves for a while, but now he’s heading out into the big world again. It’s kind of like when your kid leaves for school for the first time—you’ve kept him safe and close, but now you watch him get on the bus and wave goodbye tearfully, wanting to protect him from any hurt. Except for how it’s not like that at all. Adam isn’t a little kid, we’re not his moms, and if he forgets his lunch he’ll just have go hungry for a day. Of course we love Adam and our instincts tell us to protect and defend him from any and all attacks, but it’s worth taking a moment to think about whether (and how) to do so.
As we’ve seen before, Adam will be both praised and criticized once he and his music are back out there in the public eye. The praise will be awesome, but let’s chat about the criticism for a moment.
Some sad but true facts to consider: Not everyone is going to love Adam. Not everyone is even going to love and appreciate his voice. (Shocking, I know!) Some people won’t give him a chance because they can’t get past the [insert whatever freaks people out] and there’s nothing we can do about that. Not every gay man who dislikes Adam is jealous or bitter. Not every straight man who dislikes Adam secretly wants to f*ck him. Not every woman who dislikes Adam is a pearlclutcher. Personal taste is personal taste. There is no one on the planet who is universally adored and Adam is no exception.
When faced with someone being critical, we might ask ourselves:
Is it about personal taste? Sometimes a person simply doesn’t like Adam’s music or his personal style and it’s no deeper than that. Trying to hammer them over the head with evidence that Adam is the best singer/person EVAH! is only going to turn them off more. It’s probably best to move on.
Is it someone trying to get a rise out of the fans? Adam fans are passionate and excitable. For some people, it’s irresistible good sport to wave a red cape in front of the fandom just to watch our eyes go wild and steam come out of our nostrils. Again, it’s best not to take the bait.
Is it about Adam specifically or is there a larger issue at hand? A fashion publication saying that Adam’s latest outfit is a nightmare is one thing. A fashion publication implying that Adam has “testosterone problems” is quite another. I’m looking at you, GQ. When criticism goes beyond dissing Adam and exposes a homophobic mindset, it may be time for action. This is when it is time to think of the children—how would it be for a 12 year old kid trying to figure out her/his sexual identify to hear cruel and hurtful things disguised as humor? Respond from a place of concern for all people hurt by intolerance. Look at the big picture—we don’t just want the world to be a better place for Adam, but for all people subjected to hate.
Before commenting or tweeting, think about Bernard Meltzer’s guidelines: “…sk yourself if what you are going to say is true, is kind, is necessary, is helpful. If the answer is no, maybe what you are about to say should be left unsaid.”
If someone attacks Adam in a really ugly way, don’t stoop to their level to attack back. Using slurs and insults is adding a wrong to a wrong. Don’t give anyone a reason to say you are just as bad as the original attacker.
Speak to the issue and be brief and to the point. If someone gets a fact wrong, politely correct that one fact and don’t add unnecessary detail. And it’s not likely that, “Hey, u look like a jackass in ur avi!!!!” is helpful in any way.
Pick your target- is it an issue where a well-worded tweet can help, or is it a situation where you notify GLAAD? Sometimes a person is genuinely clueless and it helps to simply ask a question about what they meant. Other times they are truly hateful and you need to take greater measures.
Don’t apologize for other fans or speak for the fandom. We are all individuals, and no one should claim to represent the “glamily” or all fans or Adam himself. Speak for yourself and let others speak for themselves.
When on Twitter and venting/griping about some fans or some media source, it’s best not to @ reply Adam or the media source in question. Do we really want Adam’s feed filled with bellyaching about other fans? Do we think it’s helpful if a radio station is privy to fan in-fighting?
Take a breath before attacking. It’s really, really easy to fire off an angry tweet or comment before thinking things through. Hell, I’ve done it. But nothing shuts down communication faster than a personal attack. Think about how well you react when someone says, “Hey you *@!#+%#@! loser, your opinion is stoopid and btw your mama wears combat medges!” Chances are, you won’t stick around to hear more.
Finally, some things you can do to make yourself feel better (and help Adam):
Go listen to BTIKM on Vevo or YouTube and raise the view count. Find a radio poll and throw some votes in. Text or call your radio station (if BTIKM is on their playlist) and request the song. Send Adam a loving, supportive tweet. Vent to your friends here or on twitter. Take a walk or play with your cat.
We are a powerful fandom, and our power can be used to make a positive difference. The key word is “positive.”
