Adam is in the cast!
The cult filmmaker is the producer of ‘Fairyland’, a San Francisco-set story of a teenage girl and her bisexual father.
Few filmmakers pin down the coming-of-age experience quite like Sofia Coppola. From The Virgin Suicides to The Bling Ring, she understands its melancholy and madness. It makes sense then, that the next project she’s opted to get involved with sees her return to familiar ground. Fairyland, which Sofia Coppola is producing, is an adaptation of the 2013 memoir of the same name. It tells the story of Alysia Abbott, a woman recalling her youth spent in San Francisco with her father, a bisexual man, in the 70s and 80s. Of course, the story intersects with the AIDS crisis, and how it affected her family.
Having last directed On the Rocks, Sofia is about to go into production on her next directorial effort, The Custom of the Country, for Apple TV+. But it’s likely the next movie we’ll see with her name on it is Fairyland. So what do we know about it? How exactly is Sofia Coppola involved? And who can we expect to see in it when it eventually gets released? Here’s everything we know.
What’s the plot of Fairyland?
The film is, as we mentioned, an adaptation of Alysia Abbott’s 2013 memoir. After the death of her mother in 1973, she moved with her father Steve Abbott to San Francisco, where he came out as bisexual when Alysia was two years old. The city was at a point of reinvention at the time, but its burgeoning growth was halted when the AIDS epidemic gripped it. Set across the 70s and 80s, the book — and therefore, we imagine, the movie — chronicles Alysia and her father’s relationship as he contracts and succumbs to the disease.
What’s Sofia Coppola’s involvement in Fairyland?
Back when the book was first released, the Coppola family production company American Zoetrope bought the rights to its screen version. At the time, Sofia said in a statement: “I love the book Fairyland; it’s a sweet and unique love story of a girl and her dad, both growing up together in 1970s San Francisco. I think it will make an engaging and touching movie on a subject I’ve never seen before.”
At that stage, Sofia started writing a script for it, one she later co-wrote with the film’s now director Andrew Durham — known best for his iconic set photography for Sofia’s films. In a 2014 interview, Alysia Abbott shared that she was confident in placing the project in the hands of the duo, in part due to Andrew’s personal connection to the story. “He is a gay man who lost his own father to AIDS, so I believe he is going to be sensitive to the film,” she said. “He assured me it will not be like Dallas Buyers Club.”
Andrew has since assumed the role of the film’s sole writer and director. Sofia remains involved as a producer alongside her brother, Roman.
Who’s in the cast of the movie?
The film’s cast will be lead by CODA star Emilia Jones as Alysia, while Steve will be played by Scoot McNairy. Other cast members include Geena Davis, Cody Fern and Adam Lambert, as well as Maria Bakalova, our Bodies Bodies Bodies queen.
Is there a trailer for it?
The film only recently wrapped shooting, so there’s still some time before we’ll get a trailer.
What is Fairyland’s release date?
Fairyland might have wrapped, but word on when we’ll officially see it in theatres is a bit more unpredictable. The film is yet to be bought by a distributor, nor has it been scheduled for any forthcoming film festivals. But knowing Sofia’s close ties to Cannes, it’s likely the film could bow there in May 2023.
