In the United States, "oofta" or whatever is usually spelled "uff da" and is a common exclamation in the Great Plains states where Scandinavian immigrants settled. I used to work with a lady from Minnesota who said it all the time.
I found a great funny video about the culture and thought I'd pass it along:

You guys are cracking me up with the oofta stuff -- we just moved to Minnesota, well, it's been over a year--and I am still settling in. Nobody ever sent me that video before coming here!!! I've never heard of oofta but the Scandinavian roots here are impossible to miss! I feel a special bond to Sauli just by living here! In fact I went to the home and garden show here and what did I find--home saunas for sale!!

Want to thank the bunch of you on the end of the tread yesterday for passing on links to Adam's Leno interview. Can always count on this group for sharing!! Was a time that being on the Tonight Show meant you'd hit the top--must have been intimidating for him, but as always he was incredibly likable and funny. Can't wait to see him there again next week! I am sure he will be just as good and even more confident. Actually, that video is from The Jay Leno Show, not the Tonight Show. (If you look closely at the very beginning of the video, you can see "The Jay Leno Show" superimposed over the shot of the band). The interview is from the short-lived prime time TV show that Leno hosted in the fall of 2009, after Conan O'Brien replaced him as host of the Tonight Show. Adam was on Leno's show in December 2009; he was also on the Tonight Show that month. Adam appeared again on the Tonight Show in 2010 after Leno returned as host (March and May). All 3 Tonight Show appearances were performance-only, no interview. Musical acts usually do not get interviews on the Tonight Show, unless they are "legends" like Madonna. Thanks, this might have been why I was so confused and part of the reason I had trouble finding the tonight show interview on youtube!

And how are you supposed to pronounce it? There is some Scandinavian roots in Adam's family tree as well, even though I don't know how much. Adam's dad tweeted that he is 1/32 Norwegian (meaning that it had been like 5 generations earlier), but I think Adam said in interview that his own grandad had been Norwegian. I mean that if Norwegian guy was Adam's own granddad, maybe OOFTA goes in his family? Theory: Adam told about OOFTA during the dinner, and Sauli decided to use, so he scribbled in on his hand to get it right ;D.

popdust.com/2012/01/12/adam-lambert-trespassing-new-tracks/SOMEONE WHO ISN'T YOU HEARD ADAM LAMBERT'S "TRESPASSING" Posted by Katherine St Asaph on 01/12/2012 at 12:36 PM News The Popdust Files: Adam Lambert, Trespassing, Upcoming Albums There was a Adam Lambert listening session in L.A. the other day, and you didn’t even show up! Don’t feel bad, though–we didn’t either, and we just heard it from MJSBigBlog, still admirably up-to-date on everyone who was on Idol or its derivatives. And they heard about it from blogger Byron Cooke, who actually did go and brought back details on some of Adam’s Trespassing tracks. Go here for the full rundown, some photos and, he promises, an interview with Adam later today; in the meanwhile, here are the details: more
