neurodiversityI don't think Durbin is the only one dealing with it. James is the first star performer to be open about his neurodiversity from the very start of his career. I think one of the reasons Adam Lambert may have said some negative things about James is that he is jealous that Durbin had the integrity to be open about who he was from the start of his American Idol, and that he was allowed to be by Fox. Adam was only able to come out as gay after losing on American Idol. ~ Jim Cantiello thautcast.com/drupal5/content/watch-james-durbin-and-gays-talking-ellen-and-about-adam-lambert
Sorry for the OT comment -- and not to bash James -- but Jim Cantiello is incorrect. James has said he has been diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome and ADHD. Both are common disorders, particularly among boys and young male adults. ADHD - Many singers and performers have ADHD. Just one example: Adam Levine is severely ADHD and has been open about it since the beginning of his career. He has done an enormous amount of work to help build awareness of the issue and support programs for kids and young adults. Tourettes/Asperger's - Not only are there a number of other singers with Tourettes, many people who have Tourettes are encouraged to sing because that is an activity that give them relief from the symptoms. Tourette's Syndrome covers a wide spectrum of people. There is a strong correlation between some forms of T/A and musical ability. The most famous T/A musician is probably Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Most importantly, there is no industry bias against people with diabilities -- neuro-, physical or intellectual. There was systematic discrimination against gay male performers in the US music business and on US radio -- and although Adam has been successful, it has not been easy. FINALLY, in the US the ADA bans discrimination against people with disabilities and requires accommodation. There is no similar protection for LBGT Americans. >>> Now I am off my soapbox <<< One more item -- Susan Boyle is someone who is a real star with a neurological disorder -- probably autism. And it is apparent that she has issues relating to people and doing interviews.

Doesn't bother me that Durbin tweeted "fuck off" to a radio guy (I think that guy's a dj, anyway) who tweeted to him that he was "horrible." It's utterly impolitic, but what he did in a way fits with Adam's advice in that "Aftermath" intro he did about people saying, no, no, no to you. but he didn't tweet to James... ErikontheX Erik Raines #ThingsILearnedTonight James Durbin is horrible. #conan
Swearing at the guy like that was totally OTT. Asperger's? Perhaps...but he choose his career. Not cutting him any slack.

WOW That CBC Q interview was GREAT. Srsly. The interviewer was good and had a nice repore with Adam. Made it seem like we were just eavesdropping on a private convo over coffee or something. Hope he gets interviewed by him for era #2.
Loved the bit about JT telling him to go all Freddie Mercury on it.

Well, this oughta go over like a lead ballon, but what the hell. "My iissue with Durbs really isn't his singing/performance, it's his utter lack of self-awareness." Consider this, from a site on AS: Typical Features of Asperger's •General lack of awareness of people - tend to not look at people •Blind to social conventions and unspoken social "rules" •Thinkers - inside their heads constantly •May have sensory issues - acute hearing, smell, sight, touch etc causing discomfort •Unaware of reciprocal interaction •Very blunt to the point of rudeness (but being rude is unintentional) •Have narrow special interests to the point of obsession •May be fearful and anxious about social situations •Easily overwhelmed and frustrated and may tantrum •Look and act in quirky, odd and unconventional ways •May have diffculties with co-ordination and may be clumsy •May be unkempt as chose clothes for comfort not fashion •lose track of time, direction •may be disorganised •socially naive •difficulty making friends •bully magnets •uncomfortable making eye contact Yes, I am very aware of the symptoms of Aspberger's. I've written and edited many articles and interviewed a lot of Aspie students over the past five years. I know that they do have a challenge and most all who I've encountered (and their challenges are vastly varied from person to person) go through training to learn how to process what is not occurring naturally (cue-reading, etc.). It's continuous challenge, however, this is a path HE CHOSE and he had to know before going into a situation like American Idol and aspire to a career as a public figure, this was going to be under scrutiny. As someone said earlier, Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder's music was not given a free pass because of their disabilities. Nor did they ever ask for it, to my knowledge. There are obviously issues with his ability to process cues. All the reason he should be relying heavily on his support system. His wife took his Twitter away for a while; it would appear he's taken it back. Nobody in this life gets a free pass, especially in the very public, competitive world of entertainment. If he is getting flak for bad performances (he has) or spouting off and those close to him have not impressed upon him that he might have some work to do, then that's on him. He's a professional. He's getting paid for these gigs and I think he should be honor bound to give the best performance he can. If he's not and he's refusing to listen to those around him, that doesn't warrant a free pass, IMO. If you click on this article (sorry, got sidetracked w/work and see that it's been discussed) that 4Ms posted, it was ridiculous, IMO. It insinuated Adam was a coward for not coming out with his "neurodiversity," (uh, are we classifying gay as a neurodiversity now ???) Yet James was heroic for his "very classy response to Lambert's dumb statements." : : LOL, Ellen took the video down though. One person's perception, of course, but quite a disconnect as far as I'm concerned. I personally am not talking about "a free pass." But I think you know that. OK gotta go eat. Back later. Thanks to everyone who thought about what I wrote and responded in any way whether you agreed or disagreed.

I like to think of people here at Adamtopia as having good sportsmanship. i.e. being gracious about those who are not at Adam's talent level. I like to think of people here as that little bit more empathetic and more capable of putting themselves in other people's shoes. I also really like to think that, considering we all have weaknesses, we do not pick on others like so many at other forums do (some are like lions in a Roman arena, or vultures in the desert) Huge kudos to Durbin for his fight and his courage to get where he is. He has a mild social problem. It is mild but it is very real. Just as Adam is wired the way he has been wired. Durbin is wired the way he is and had no choice in the matter. This is a personal request, not an Adamtopia requirement. Please lets not be like the others out there who pick on those not at Adam's level, and the more vulnerable, but rather be the one's who get it. Durbin is more vulnerable. I am not feeling sorry for him. It is a fact. It is truly unsportsmanlike to pick on people in general. But when you represent the winner, the best of the best, which Adam is when it comes to vocals, being and entertainer, and social abilities, all the more reason to be kind and gracious about those who are not at that level. Another lesson we can learn from Adam himself.Skylar, once again you struck a chord with me. I really, really try to live my life by this rule. I'm nowhere near to Adam's level, but I try.... While I admit I might secretly be entertained by the clever snark cultivated elsewhere (mostly Twitter) I try not to engage myself too much with that. Firstly, because I'm here for Adam, and putting down others does not help him. Secondly, because any kind of negativity does not make me feel particularly good or smart personally. Regarding JD; he's not my cuppa, but I wish him all the best with his career. He's trying to do something with his life/passion/talent, which I totally admire. If we think it has not been easy for Adam, it's ten times harder for JD, and he's doing the best HE can... J/S... ETA: Just wanted to add, that every artist is constantly judged; if you want to work within this industry, criticism comes with the territory. Grow a thick skin and make the next performance/record better. But when commentary turns to mean/hateful and is more about the person than the performance, I do not enjoy that. On the other hand, JD is an easy target, he reacts without thinking. Unfortunately for him, it's not gonna help him build his career. So I just choose to ignore him & his comments.

I'm, just skimming here, so forgive me. I didn't want to lose my question because it just struck me. cassie, what the hell is a NJ nasal twang? I get what you're talking about with voices. I grew up in NJ and totally hate the way I used to talk (sorry fellow Jersey girls). I just never thought of it as a nasal twang. Twang = country Accents and the way people pronounce things have always fascinated me. Why do British and Australian singers sound American when they sing? I'm talkin' to you Elton John, Mick Jagger, Keith Urban. What about ABBA? Anyway, I'd love an example of someone singing/talking with a NJ nasal twang. Maybe the NJ twang thing is why I used to listen to and sing country music? Interesting about accents while singing. I've always maintained that American rock singers sing with an English accent. My theory is that the British rock invasion was so influential that American singers imitated their pronunciation. For example, dropping R's off the ends of words: "betta" instead of "better." I don't know how valid the reasoning is in this article, here is one explanation for this phenomenom: www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-1299749/They-just-cayant-help-How-Wino-Jagger-sing-U-S-accent-natural-way-carry-tune.htmlETA: The article claims that an American accent is a more natural way to sing. Quote: "Sir Mick Jagger does it, Robert Plant does it, sometimes even Sir Elton John, Amy Winehouse and Annie Lennox do it. But the irritating habit British stars have of singing with an American accent may not be their fault. Linguistics researchers claim that singing with a U.S. twang is not simply an annoying affectation – but actually the most natural way to carry a tune." lt would be interesting to hear Cassie's POV on this.

Good Lord are we really hashing it out about whether it's okay to say if we think a performance or a music artist sucks or not? Why we gotta be so damn pc? They put themselves out there in the public eye and being judged comes along with the territory. Hell everyone is judged everyday by everyone, the only thing is that we aren't famous so no one takes to the web to endlessly discuss it (Let me tell you people could have written an OPUS about how crappy I looked the other day if I was famous. Just sayin lol) MY NAME IS CHUNKEY AND I THINK DURBIN SUCKS AND IS A MEDIOCRE SINGER AT BEST. There. Is anyone scandalized? If so....oh well. IMO anyone who tries to play nice to everyone and make everyone happy and never try to get anyone upset is boring. And their Mama thinks they are boring too. WE ONLY LIVE ONCE PEOPLE!!! WE SHOULD NOT STAND FOR SUCKAGE! WE SHOULD LET OUR VOICES BE HEARD!!1 #REALNESS =b ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ...
