I absolutely think he was being sincere. I think he was just being nice. He's a hella better human being than I am. (Had second hand embarrassment for "durbs").... Wasn't impressed with JD's curt "thank-you" either. : (Okay, I despise the guy... I really, REALLY do. I'm not proud of it, but it's not going to change. Haha!) Been gone all day, so this is late. I think Adam was telling his Glamberts to be nice. Twitter was full of Durbin snark earlier today.

WARNING: Esoteric, philosophic dip into the deep end, cuz, I don’t have any peas, frozen or otherwise. Feel free to scroll. Any neuroscientists on this forum? I have a question. Is the human brain built in such a way as to naturally think in terms of compare/contrast? Yes/no, on/off, hero/villain/ like/dislike, black/white? It seems to be ubiquitous in our society. We certainly see it in Adamland with poll after meaningless poll about which Idol is better/best? Which song do you vote for? Who has the best hair? Guy next door or the guyliner? It is also manifest in sports; my team is better than your team, this guy is the best quarterback, etc. And all the competition shows on TV: singing, dancing, cooking, fashion designing, losing weight, surviving in the wilderness, and bitching. Is that just the way we are hard-wired? If so, I suspect our Adam is wired a bit differently in that respect as well as others. When asked, “What is your favorite….” we have seen him, time and again, struggle and say he doesn’t have favorites. I don’t think that is just Adam being political. I think often he doesn’t perceive things as black and white, or even shades of gray (which is really only different combinations of black and white). He perceives things in technicolor, in rainbows, in diversity. Because of this, he has eclectic tastes and talents. He finds something appealing and positive and worthy in many things he sees and hears. And that open perspective is part of what makes him such a great artist. I wonder if that is a commonality among many outstanding artists and creative people? This ability to appreciate without putting a pre-determined value on things and people. And I wonder if Adam ever is puzzled by the black and white thinking and behavior of those around him, including his passionate fans. Just thinking. This reminds me of a comment someone at Adamtopia posted about the creative personality which referenced an article by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. I don't know who it was who posted this so if you know please tell me I'd like to add the name to my doc. www.psychologytoday.com/articles/199607/the-creative-personalityIn the article Csikszentmihalyi talks about the psychological androgyny found in creative people as a concept much wider than sexual androgeny. He explains that psychological androgyny refers to a person's ability to be at the same time aggressive and nurturant, sensitive and rigid, dominant and submissive, regardless of gender. Such that a psychologically androgynous person in effect doubles his or her repertoire of responses. Creative individuals are more likely to have not only the strengths of their own gender but those of the other one, too... Perhaps this psychological androgyny also widens one's view and breaks down some of the barriers of more dichotomous (is this a word?) thinking. But that doesn't answer your question about the neurological differences in the brain of a highly creative person. I do know that trauma can increase black and white thinking through an overactive limbic system/fight or flight response. Cassie, thanks for raising this question. I get so upset by the 'us vs them' mentality but at the same time it's so easy to get caught up in it, whether it's at work, in politics, or online. Skylar, thanks so much for the article. Aah, I find all of this so interesting, but no time to really read and digest it now. But i associate Csikszentmihalyi with the concept of *flow* -- kind of a complete engagement with creative energy (like being 'in the moment' or 'in the zone') which blocks out distracting and competing thoughts. This is totally what happens to Adam onstage. Sorry if this is going a bit OT, but here's an article about the concept. I found this particular article randomly, but I've read some of Csikszentmihalyi's writing before and so much of what is said in this article applies to Adam -- and to anyone who acts, writes, paints, plays sports, etc. etc. austega.com/education/articles/flow.htmApart from being a bit of a intellectual dilettante anyway, these ideas are important to me because I keep trying to figure out what I'm doing here in the Adam fandom -- and to reference Juniemoon's words, I definitely feel like an outlier. Don't even understand all of my own reactions, but my instinctive response to anything in life that affects me for better or worse is to try to figure out what I"m supposed to be learning. Not intending to downplay my VISCERAL responses, which are equally important and mostly pleasurable, lol. Ok, I think I'm losing control of my verbiage (that sounds bad!) so I'll end this post.

Cassie, You might be interested in this article from the New York Times www.nytimes.com/2010/05/08/books/08creative.html?pagewanted=all"As for Dr. Jung, his research has produced some surprising results. One study of 65 subjects suggests that creativity prefers to take a slower, more meandering path than intelligence. 'The brain appears to be an efficient superhighway that gets you from Point A to Point B' when it comes to intelligence, Dr. Jung explained. 'But in the regions of the brain related to creativity, there appears to be lots of little side roads with interesting detours, and meandering little byways.' Although intelligence and skill are generally associated with the fast and efficient firing of neurons, subjects who tested high in creativity had thinner white matter and connecting axons that have the effect of slowing nerve traffic in the brain. This slowdown in the left frontal cortex, a region where emotional and cognitive abilities are integrated, Dr. Jung suggested, “might allow for the linkage of more disparate ideas, more novelty and more creativity."
According to Kenneth Heilman, a neurologist at the University of Florida and the author of “Creativity and the Brain” (2005), creativity not only involves coming up with something new, but also with shutting down the brain’s habitual response, or letting go of conventional solutions.
Risk taking and addictive behavior should also be measured, since both traits play a role in creativity, he said.
There may be, for example, a dampening of norepinephrine, the neurotransmitter that sets off the fight-or-flight alarm. That’s why creative connections often occur when people are most peaceful — relaxing under a tree, like Isaac Newton, or in a dream state, like Coleridge when he thought up “Kubla Khan.”I find this topic fascinating! Soo happy to switch to it. Skylar, thanks for posting this article too. Loved it.

Virginia Woolf and Coleridge wrote about great [read creative] minds being androgynous. But I'd also say sometimes the medium shapes the message. I was reading about online behavior the other day and how the personas we adopt online are often emotionally distorted as opposed to our real personalities. I know for myself I often don't post unless I disagree with something or have another take, so black and white thinking might be more about where the thought is expressed, than the full complexity of a person's take on an issue. For example I vote down competitors to Adam on the takeover even though I like the songs. I vote for Adam over other songs (on Sophie's Challange for example) that I might like more than BTIKM. It's not that my online behavior reflects my true thoughts about these things, but is more about being part of a team with larger goals and behaving strategically. I like Chunkey's light and dark cover idea - part of the face in shadow, and also some take on iceish's idea of a translucent veil/nekkid adam/and symbols. Another possibility is some kind of mirror or double portrait with dark and light aspects. I think there's a strong chance of black and white or a restricted color palette, but who knows. Because he is a solo pop artist I think the likelihood is very high that it will be his face and/or body for marketing reasons. Rabbitrabbit, love this post. With the rare exception, I don't vote, but I do find that I feel very reactionary sometimes in the online part of my life. I usually try not to express that, because it's uncomfortable and not the way I behave in most situations in rl. But it probably sneaks out sometimes, lol. ETA: of course, you're talking about being strategic and not reactionary. I guess for me my feelings don't always align with my thoughts, and that seems to be more true online than in rl. I think. : Gabby, love your cover idea! Juniemoon, thanks for your response to my post this morning. I really enjoyed reading your thoughts. Aah, late again. This is my true Adam connection.

Before I say something about my specific situation I wanted to briefly comment on the ongoing discussion.
Yes, celebrities sign up for public scrutiny and with that also comes sometimes public judgment, sarcasm, jokes, ridicule or even hatred. It is sad enough that it is that way.
As an individual the only thing I can do and need to do about this is ask myself whether I am contributing to this situation or whether I use my own two cents to make the situation better, the day overall a bit righter, brighter, lighter and for whom.
What the rest of the world does is not my responsibility, because I cannot control that. But when I read that people excuse their own bad behavior with the fact that celebrity have to put up with that, then these are just not people I agree with or want to be friends with, tbh, that’s all.
Whether the person that is harassed is somebody who is gay or black or a foreigner or somebody who is socially awkward, the story is each time the same. Fun and jokes are sometimes a difficult terrain. It is a good thing to make people laugh, so that makes the world brighter, right? Well if I do it on the back of somebody else, is it still ok? What is more important, the protection of the one who gets dissed or hurt in the process or the entertainment of those who are entertained? I prefer entertainment that stays away from such kind of topics. There’s a thin line between the dark side and the light side…somebody close to our heart is singing. A profound line in an otherwise quite light-weight kind of a song (IIHY). And a personal decision to be made by each person, with the celebrity living the result of the ten thousand such individual choices coming together.
One reason I am following Adam is because he consistently chooses the light and bright, but also the right side, even in the face of adversity or when his opinion is that of a minority. And he thinks it through before he makes his point, which is why he usually is 3 steps ahead of everyone else.
When I come online, I usually have the hope to find that same spirit reflected here among each other and quite often it is. But sometimes it is not. Two days ago was a silly situation and my post or the opposing view that was posted next were not the problem, at least for me that was just normal discussion.. But what happened next was ridiculous and not even worth to be debated – it does not even make enough sense to review it. I logged off, but let people know that I left in protest. The thing that had started being about Adam was about everything else 20 pages later.
Adamtopia is by far the best site around when it comes to AdamNews, no question. It is set up great (thanks Q3), with those daily threads, those fantastic archives, concert threads and the multitude of other special threads. It has some great people posting here making wonderful contributions.
But on occasion this site can go off kilter. I had no idea that Kanadie left and I don’t know why he left, so I cannot speak for that, but if this site is losing posters like him, it perhaps is time to do a bit more than just shrug the shoulders and think – oh well, one down. I am stunned to hear these news and very much saddened by this. But to be honest, I can also understand it even though I am guessing.
The fact that so many here have to regularly step away and take a breather may be their personal situation. We all make mistakes. But it also is a sign of a bit too much carelessness and folks better know that they are driving other folks away and probably are hindering again others from joining. It is possible to still keep your individual style of whatever, pea-throwing or deep discussion, but not be hurtful in the process. A bit of thinking and compassion goes a long way.
Skylar and PostfestumPF and many others I want to thank for your posts tonight. And I want to thank Hoopla for at least trying to cut a path through the mess a few days ago. And I am sorry about my rather short cut exit a few days ago, I had no idea that Adam’s wonderful charity drives was going to be a controversial topic. I admit though that my exit was less than elegant, I was just pretty frustrated at the time and I guess it showed. I did not continue to read, so I don’t know whether it ended there or whether you kept going, I just had to get out and get air.
How is it that Adam can turn around a topic in 140 characters or less, if he disagrees with what he sees? That is what I want to know. And he does it without creating a mess.
With that said, I probably will be less here or at least stay a bit more on the sidelines. Will see how that works. On that note, good night to all those folks who are keeping the lights on when we here close things down.

*sighs*
May I say that all the lecturing and admonitions are just as off-putting.
*cue dramatic exit* (nah...haha! )
