REVIEWPrepare to be seriously wowed by Adam Lambert's 'High Drama'Watching close-ups of Cher mopping up her tears, while she witnessed Adam Lambert performing his extremely moving version of 'Believe', cemented something we already knew: when it comes to interpreting other people’s songs, Lambert’s untouchable.Clocking Chandelier within High Drama’s tracklisting gave us anticipatory goosebumps, but Lambert’s version of Sia’s masterpiece still managed to exceed our wildest expectations.
Whaddaya mean he can execute those yo-yoing choruses without activating his head voice? His money notes hit like surprise pyrotechnics, and we crown Lambert melisma king. The singles he has already released from this covers album – Mad About the Boy (his cinematic title song from the 2022 doco Mad About the Boy – The Noel Coward Story); his glam-rock, swaggering, Muse-like treatment of Holding Out for a Hero; and the piano-led Ordinary World with its additional, devastating string arrangement – reflect the High Drama Lambert serves throughout.

I watched the music video first thing today and my initial reaction was how clever and courageous Adam is to visually keep the focus on "Getting Older" during times when youthfulness and looking young is celebrated and worshipped while aging and looking old(er) is almost a negative trait.
Second thought was when will we get to see attractive and sexy Adam in a music video again (lol), and do I prove my previous point here? I must admit that I liked the way he looked in the Ghost Town video...
Which brings me to my final thought... I should get over it as we may never get that rather contemporary look of the TOH era back. I can definitely see now how Adam may continue his make-up and glitter routine way into old age haha.
Conclusion.. Regardless of my visual preferences, the taste of "High Drama" has been enticing. Can't wait for the whole album!!!

Oh, and someone I think girldrummer asked how Adam is going to make money on the "High Drama" album. My two cents here... fan merchandise, ideally touring, and hopefully a good amount of album sales. Renewed visibility and continuous opportunities in the entertainment field are probably a longer term "pay off".

First listen reactions: Expectations are a weird thing - I expected to like some songs more than others, and I was totally wrong. I found My Attic on my YouTube feed first, listened to it and FLOVED it. It fits great with the Getting Older and Ordinary World, with intimate vocals in your ear. I did not expect to love it so much. I had heard people who went to the listening parties praising Adam's version of Chandelier, but wasn't sure... Now I am. It is better than the original (duh!) West Coast is cool, except I don't like the Uh Baby Uh Baby part going up, I hoped he would use his lower register there. Not exactly disappointed, but I had higher expectations. The rest of the song rocks! I'm A Man is awesome. I had seen only that one live performance of the original and did not expect to like the cover. Wrong again! Sex On Fire feels like a relative of Loverboy in its closeness to Prince, except I find the vocals on Loverboy piercing (maybe the only track on Velvet I tend to skip), while this one is super enjoyable. I love the original I Can't Stand The Rain and Do You Really Want To Hurt Me. I am not a fan of the reimagined versions. Yet. And of course all 4 tracks that were released already are fantastic. Now I'm off to listen to all of them a hundred more times to learn to love them all
