DISPLAY DRAMA KINGAdam Lambert: The King of Drama releases a terrific cover album. In the DISPLAY exclusive interview, he talks about his love, sex, Boy George, outed stars and getting older.
Adam Lambert shone on the talent show "American Idol" in 2009, since then the openly gay artist has had a tremendous career as a pop star and singer of Queen. Now the 41-year-old is remembering one of his core competencies and releasing "High Drama", a varied album with songs by colleagues such as Bonnie Tyler, Billie Eilish ("Getting Older") and Culture Club.
Interview Steffen Rath
DISPLAY: Adam, why an album with cover songs? Adam Lambert: Because I was dying to put out new music. At the same time I'm working on a musical, which I can't say much about yet. Nothing at all? Except that it's based on a person's life story in 70's New York, I wrote about 75 percent of the music and we're currently working on the script. But that's still going on, and I thought: Why not go back to my roots a little? Eventually I came out in public as an interpreter of foreign songs on "American Idol".
Did you ponder the choice of eleven songs for a long time? My original list was much longer. The pieces had to meet two criteria: I have to love the melody and the lyrics. And I have to be able to find myself personally in the stories that are being told here. All these songs could theoretically also be mine, because they reflect my life experiences.
Adam and the Rock
The title "High Drama" also fits perfectly. You literally sing your heart out. Total. I love injecting a good dose of intensity into songs. I approach even the tender songs on this album from the dramatic side.
This is how Lana Del Rey's soft "West Coast" becomes a rock board for you. cool, right? (laughs) For me what we're doing is progressive rock. As soon as I heard Lana's original I felt that blues influence in the guitar work. And I thought: That sounds like Led Zeppelin. We uncovered this spirit of the song and let off steam as rockers. "West Coast" is my tribute to Jimmy Page and Robert Plant. I think seventies rock is fantastic.
As the Queen singer you've been since 2012, anything else would be weird too. Did you consciously decide against a Queen cover on «High Drama»? Yes, that would have been too redundant for me. I've been singing these songs for ten years and I absolutely love them, but we already released a live album during Corona. People now know enough how I sing Queen.
You toured with Queen last summer. How is the band going? If everyone is in the mood and stays healthy, we'll continue. I love singing with Queen. We have long since become a family.
What kind of music did you grow up with? Mainly with Rock'n'Roll. My parents listened to their vinyl all the time, Mum and Dad loved Motown as much as they did Rock. I am grateful to my parents for having such good taste.
But what did you do with Bonnie Tyler's "Holding Out For A Hero"? Your recording sounds a lot more pop than the original. With the piece, we allowed ourselves a great deal of freedom of interpretation and made a hybrid out of it. Now it has the identity of an early seventies glam rock number coupled with modern beats and synthesizers.
Adam's hard times
Sia's "Chandelier" is already highly dramatic in the original. It can't have been easy to top the song in terms of melodramatics. As a matter of fact. I'm really going all out, we've also added an electric guitar. I love this song more than anything. Sia is just brilliant.
People think "Chandelier" is a party song. In reality, it is about alcoholism, mental health problems and self-destruction. Where is the connection to you? There have been times in my life when I have struggled, suffered like a dog, and been less than happy with who I am. I numbed that feeling with alcohol. However, I didn't realize how dirty I was for a while. Because most of my friends showed a similar behavior at the time. It was normal to be totally inconsiderate towards yourself. It was a nasty downward spiral.
When did you realize that you couldn't go on like this? Right before I applied to American Idol. In 2006 I was completely screwed. I went out far too much, lost myself in casual encounters and affairs, drank too much and was searching for the meaning of life, for some calling. I'm grateful that thanks to "American Idol" I've come to my senses and found a job that fulfills me and makes me happy.
Adam and the happiness of love
Are you able to balance work and private life? I'm still learning how to improve that balance. I need a little normality in my life. It took me a long time to create a base, a real home. In the beginning I ran here and there, was really excited from all the traveling and could hardly get any rest. I rented house after house, never staying long. I have my own house now, which is nice, and I think I've settled down a bit.
do you live with someone Yes. I live with my boyfriend Oliver Gliese and my dog. Both make me very happy (laughs).
Adam and the coming out
You also took on Culture Club's first number one hit, Do You Really Want To Hurt Me. Singer Boy George came out as bisexual in 1983 and ten years later as gay. Is he a role model for you? No one who has ever seen a Culture Club video would have thought Boy George straight (laughs). Boy and I are friends. I've always admired him for the way he performed when he burst onto the mainstream music scene overnight. Back then, it was even more complicated to come out sexually as anything other than the norm. He did it with wit, charm and poetry. He always had his own style and voice. George was ahead of his time in many ways. I don't think he gets the respect he deserves for his contribution to the queer scene.
How long have you been friends? In 2010 I met him in London. He was a DJ in a club and we got talking. He really is super charming. I admire him. George also had his struggles and his demons, he was down a few times and did a lot to help him get better. He accepted help and worked on himself. Personally, I think it's important to be able to forgive. We all make mistakes, but we have the opportunity to learn from our mistakes.
«I live with my friend Oliver Gliese and my dog. Both make me very happy»
In 2012 you were the first openly gay artist to top the US album charts with «Trespassing». Are you amazed at how much progress has been made since the Boy George era, when being openly gay in mainstream pop was still taboo? Absolutely. We have achieved a lot in the past decade alone. Certainly there were queer artists before me, and I think that lesbian women like Melissa Etheridge paved the way for us men a bit. A milestone was certainly Elton John, who came out, and George Michael, who was outed at this time. Both are great heroes of mine. When I came into the pop world, everything was more open, but not comparable to today. I was part of a wave that made queerness in pop a matter of course. Today, many LGBTQ+ artists are established as successful brands.
George Michael struggled with his sexuality, Elton John temporarily had a wife as a cover. Something like that wouldn't be imaginable today, would it? I don't know, but the social tone is quite different today. The young generation is taking the next step and is in the middle of a gender revolution. Young people feel very free to find out and try out who they are and what their identity is.
Adam in the movie
You are also appearing as an upcoming actor in the Sofia Coppola-produced film «Fairyland», which just premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. what is your role? The film is about a single gay father in San Francisco in the 1970s. I play one of his boyfriends just before AIDS breaks out in town. I did musical theater as a teenager and would like to do more films in the future if the opportunity arises.
In "Getting Older," 21-year-old Billie Eilish sings about aging well. How does 41-year-old Adam Lambert feel about the song? I really wanted to sing a song by Billie, and "Getting Older" caught my attention immediately. Young Billie describes what growing up feels like in a timeless way. I myself have decided to turn forty every year now. That's the perfect age, I think (laughs).
