A short lesson re Dutch/German:
The two languages are not easily understood by each other when written, but spoken they sound very similar and sometimes I understand what peoples say. Just because of the sound of words.
Even more than Italian or Spanish - these we "understand/comprehend" because of the common basis of Latin.
