Today he will go to 3 stations: hr3 in Frankfurt. FFH and bigFM have a station, so I can only guess here. But for FFH it is probably Bad Vilbel as it is only 6 miles away from Frankfurt and it is the main station. Possibilities for bigFM are Stuttgart, Ludwigshafen, Mainz, maybe Koblenz.

It will be a exhausting day for Adam. :-/

And on Wednesday he will visit 2 stations in Berlin.

BTIKM is going for Pop/CHR Radio Adds tomorrow. It is part of its continued path up the carts. This is the hardest format to get airplay on because this is the format that plays the smallest number of song -- they only play hits.

If US Pop Radio doesn’t really make sense to you, don’t worry about it. You have loads of company – just about everyone. A new report from Arbitron-Mediabse-Inside Radio makes it clear that CHR music programming is really simple – play the Top 10 songs a lot and keep your playlist short. With that formula, it is easy to see why it is so hard for new music to make it on CHR.

Here is part of a report from the new Arbitron-Mediabase-Inside Radio study of stations in PPM markets. Don’t worry about all the buzz words – translations are interspersed. Here are a few excerpts from the report.

1. About one-third of its total spins come from just 10 songs, according to a new Arbitron-Mediabase-Inside Radio study of stations in PPM markets. Pop CHR is also out front in the percentage of airplay it devotes to songs in the top 50 — about 60%-70%. CHR stations aired, on average, about 310 unique titles during the April-June study period, the lowest number of the six contemporary music formats studied. “There are only so many hits,” says Cox Media Group top 40 format leader and WBLI,

So what does this really say? CHR stations play the same songs over and over. Easy to see in this chart:



2. Nassau-Suffolk, NY PD Jeremy Rice. “Top 40 stations are the best at generating cume, which is what wins in PPM.” Only AC has greater national reach than pop CHR. Although fast rotations and short lists have been a winning formula since top 40 sprang up in the 1950s, electronic measurement is bringing more science to song selection and rotations.

What did he say?

First the buzz words.

Cume = The estimated number of different listeners (persons) that tune in during a daypart in an average week, sometimes called "reach" or "circulation."

Dayparts = Industry-accepted time periods for radio listening; e.g., Monday-Friday 6AM-10AM or Saturday 3PM-7PM. May also be "custom" Dayparts such as a time period for a particular program.
PPM = Portable People Meter (PPM) is a system developed by Arbitron to measure how many people are listening (or at least exposed) to individual radio stations and television stations, including cable TV. The PPM is worn like a pager, and detects hidden audio tones within a station or network's audio stream, logging each time it finds such a signal. Arbitron claims it is much more accurate than the old handwritten logs or wired meters, and is immune to forgetful test subjects.

Now to his point – CHR is based on playing a few songs a lot and has been since the 1950s but now with fast, accurate, electronic measurement, they can rapidly adjust what they play to deliver the audience they want – listeners 18 to 35. If people change stations to avoid a song, the station will learn this quickly.

3. Like almost all formats in the study, top-ranked pop CHR stations share remarkably similar musical characteristics with lower ranked stations (see chart). Wider usage of regionalized or nationalized programming may be accelerating this trend. Lower rated pop CHRs had about 6% more total song spins than top-ranked stations, which may be due to big morning shows that play fewer records. “A station with a [talky] morning show could be a PPM music machine from 10am on,” Rice says. “Tight playlists will win but that doesn’t mean stations can’t be aggressive with the right records and go early on core artists. That makes exciting radio.”

The big takeaway – the difference between the top stations and the ratings losers is NOT the play list, it is the on-air personalities. It is not clear if the increasing centralization of playlist management is the cause of this sameness in playlists or not.

Adam Lambert Talks About Writing “Outlaws Of Love”

Speaking exclusively to VH1, Adam Lambert candidly discusses the inspiration behind, “Outlaws Of Love”, from his forthcoming album, Trespassing. He says the song comes “from a very real place, and I think one of the things that’s been really exciting about doing this as a career, as a job, being who I am is that I’m able to give people strength and encouragement that feel like outsiders.”

In the video interview (above), Lambert sits with the lauded cover art of the new album, and discusses the challenges that face the LGBT community, and how “Outlaws Of Love” addresses these issues; “One of the things I haven’t gotten to really do is sing about how it sucks some times, and how it’s hard and how it hurts and the pain and the struggle that the LGBT community goes through on so many different levels, and that’s what the song is about… It’s not the sadness about being gay, its about the sadness about the adversity that we face.”

Self-exploration and addressing social injustice is nothing new in music, but Adam has managed to bring real emotion to the pop song with a poignancy that doesn’t mute the uplifting current of his soaring vocals. And that’s probably why “Outlaws Of Love” resounds with us so much — because it comes from a very real, very honest place inside Adam.
