I hope no one minds; I've got a whole lot of ~feeling to share :-). See, I'm a pretty zen Adam Stan. I love him to distraction, but I don't have many illusions about him. I know he's not a superstar, and that's ok. He's not a music making genius, despite having the voice of an angel. FYE, as much as I love it, is not an A+ album. And that's always been fine with me. BUT. But lately the Buzz and overwhelming positive reviews about the quality of this album have just got me shaking. There's this constant bubble of excitement and anticipation in my stomach at all times. I watch some of the uk interviews where journalists are telling him his album is brilliant and the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. I BELIEVE. Like I never have before. This album will be epic. awwww....  |

My 4-year-old granddaughter was totally mesmerized and captivated by Adam's new video. "I'm gonna watch it a thousand times." Sorry the sound is so poor, but this is just too precious!

On the topic of sales numbers -- great for PR but ALL sales numbers for recorded music are inaccurate -- retail, wholesales shipments, US or China. The only question is what is the level of inaccuracy.
Nielsen Soundscan is the source of US Retail sales -- but it only includes about 90% of sales AND there are many exclusions -- plus the definition of a retail sale has changed over time. Many CD and digital sales are not reported to Nielsen. Many CD and digital sales are not counted buy Nelsen because they are classified as "not normal". For example, the Amazon $3.99 MP3 album special of FYE (2009) was not counted as a retail sale, but Lady Gaga's $0.99 Amazon sales of BTW album were counted as normal sales.
Most international sales are estimates. Some like Canada are estimated based upon a sample of retailers.
I will not bore everyone with detailed examples of all the sources of issues but in the end it really does not matter what the "retail sales" reported by Nielsen are EXCEPT that it is used by Billboard for the charts.
What does matter is wholesale sales and expenses.
-- Wholesale sales (what the label sells) is what royalties are paid from.
-- Label profits -- the label sales less costs is what funds future records.
If Adam sold 1.5 million units of FYE or 1.7 million or 1.9 million -- whatever the number -- is not the important number. At this level, the unit sale price also matters. FYE was sold at a high price point with very few deep discount promotions. And those appear to be funded by the retailer so would not affect RCA $.

With Trespassing and all the collabs this time, I hope he's going to get even bigger in Japan and other Asian countries. If I have to guess, I think he will go and start his Asian/Australian promo tour when he's promoting his album. Asia and Australia and NZ in his LA Promo interviews. No specific mention of Japan but it is the #2 market in the world -- roughly equal to UK+Germany+Austria+France. Since we know that Adam sold approximately 50% of his FYE albums outside of US (RCA press release last week said worldwide sales almost 2 million, US should be around 900K -- they use wholesale shipments NOT retail sales.) Japan may be even more import to Adam's marketing. The description of Trespassing and Cuckoo sound like these singles many be more suited to Japan than BTIKM. So, my guess is that they will wait until the second single for him to go to Japan. Most interesting to me is that they continue to pretty much ignore France -- the only top 5 market that Adam has not really spent much time in (Top 5 are US, Japan, UK, Germany and France). Adam seems like he should do well in France but that requires a localized promo effort. I would not be surprised to see them launch a concerted effort in France later in the year after they have properly established a foundation for Adam in the UK. And the UK promo is being done right this time.    |
